HOI4 Dev Diary - MTG Post Release

Hi everyone! Last Thursday we released Man the Guns and the 1.6 Ironclad Update and I am super happy to see how many people are playing it. We broke our records for concurrent players and monthly active players again :) It's also heartwarming with all the PMs and messages we have been getting from people loving the expansion, so thanks for that, it is always great to hear what people like (sub warfare seems to be a big favourite).

I usually share some telemetry on what is popular after a new expansion, and right now we can see that the expansion has made UK a lot more popular as well as Mexico. USA has always been very popular and also got a significant bump. The Netherlands is actually hitting some kind of backend bug for us so I cant see how popular it is yet!. The country losing out the most actually seems to be Germany with most of the classic democracies up in popularity. Next week I hope I can have details on what custom gameplay rules people use and such as well as what focus paths are the most taken :)

1.6.1 Patch
We have been busy listening to feedback and working on an upcoming 1.6.1 patch.
So far the WIP changelog looks like this:

GUI Change Highlight
Focus wise, ignoring bugs and such there have been a lot of people who think the naval gameplay is hard to learn so we have been working on improving UI here.

The task force composition editor was hard to work with, so we have made a new interface for it with a lot nicer flow:
upload_2019-3-6_16-42-11.png

The composition edtior is an important tool to reduce micro because when you set it up you can trust that the right ships get reinforced to your fleet if they end up with losses etc. Hopefully you will like this new iteration :)

We have also added a bunch more info at a glance to the ship entries:
upload_2019-3-6_16-59-12.png

We added the reinforcement fleet to the bottom bar to make it easier to manage your task force
upload_2019-3-6_17-2-9.png

We also improved the fuel indicator on fleets, so more barrels = fuel thirstier, and there is also an indicator if you seem to be doing something you shouldn't with your fleet, such as patrol with capital forces:
upload_2019-3-6_17-6-56.png

We plan to be working with improving area selection visibility, make it easier to clear mission areas and send all ships back to port, as well as feedback on what kind of missions are suboptimal for ships, improve tooltips (a bunch have already been improved) etc. We have also been working with making AI a bit more reactive to the player leaning heavily into mining or late game sub warfare as those require a bit more specialized builds. We'll keep you guys posted as the patch develops. Thanks for feedback and support <3

Tutorial videos
Finally, we have also been working on making 7 new tutorial videos which will help you ease in at the helm :) You can check them out here, and feel free to spread them around when you see people in need:

See you all next week for more updates on post release work and telemetry :)

My bad then. Bug report it if you haven't yet. If they have the tech they should have the base template. Unless that is a calculated balance nerf by @podcat

I started to but somebody had reported already. I just added my, $.02 that verified that is was a bug. The US gets a lot of naval experience, but not much land experience . It's not a game breaker but that plus choosing limited intervention instead of the neutrality act caused me to quit my US game. I'll try again after the next patch is out.

I will point out again the lack of templates might be intentional. The US had almost no doctrine and certainly no formations of motorized infantry in 1936. The cavalry generals were still in charge then.

As far as marine units, they operated in small units of under brigade strength in this time frame iirc. True, they did serve in division strength during the Great War, but that was as pure ground infantry. And landing doctrine was still under development.

sorry but I am not happy with this DLC its extremly bad done! i was hyped very well, but this sucks totaly!

1. making a blockad on UK is complet useless!!! i manage to destroy all transport of all allies and UK has 0 Fuel BUT they can still use all there Aircrafts without any Problems???
2. the Stabiltysystem is still complet broken!! afer you can not destroy any transporter it the malus going down, at this time bombing is useless too, to push the Stability from UK because they can still use there Airforce (or are this American ones how dont need a support line?? flying with air and love?). in the lategame 1945 its not possible to push the UK stability below 100% after you destroy all Transports and aktiv Bombing, because they have +60% bonus. Fix this Shit!!
3. i waiting for Allied Bombers (Strategic) but they AI is not able to use it, so i neerly never see a Bomber .. just boring.
4. the AI use Braindead Divisiontemplates (still) never heared from AA? Tank AA? mobile Artellerie, Tankdestroyers? Heavy Tanks and in all there Variants? why this braindead light/medium tank spam in tank devision? more than 3 are not needed and can supplyed and build much better (and are historic accurat) and maybe add same TD or SPGs.
5. also terrible done all Japan BBs looks like Yamato, realy? was that not better by releas of the game?
6. Ship builder.. when the maingun are final on ship 2 Turret (with 2-3 Guns ) why ships like New York, Fuso and same athers dont have 3 of the this Batteries? that you can not build of the Naval treaty ist fine but this ships where build for this event.

all in all the DLC is bad done and feels not finish at all.
Yes I really liked how convoy raiding is actually feasible now and should have an actual impact on the country but the 50% max impact on WS and it slowly going down after killing every convoy of the UK/JAP is kinda useless since they will still be using their airforce and it doesn't make a dent on their war support.
Other than that and some bugs I really liked this DLC

I feel like ships get too much XP in training and too little in combat, I mean what is the difference between training patrol and doing patrol? Still one gives XP the other doesn't so to speak. Also Air and Land training doesn't give much XP, while air volunteers create crazy amounts of XP.

I agree completely. In particular, convey raiding gives either no or almost no experience. I had an early war as Germany against only France and Czech and my Naval battle against France in the battle which cost me 2 BB and the French a CV and CA got more than 100, roughly the same as my pre-war training. But I got under 10 points for the sub war for a year.

A couple hundred planes in a short Spanish civil war got more than 150 while training up the whole Luftwaffe from Green to regular got less than 50.

I really like all the new varied (and I think realistic) uses of experience, but the process of earning the XP seem inconsistent and just plain wrong.

The US briefly toyed with the idea of using motorized divisions in 1940. The 4th Infantry Division was used to test the idea. Ultimately, the army decided it was more flexible to use independent truck battalions and assign them where needed. Probably the most famous example of this occurred during the battle of the Bulge. The 82nd and 101'st Airborne Divisions were pulled put on trucks and transported to the combat area and then the trucks left to either transport more troops or supplies.

Quote from the changelog: “- Unlocking new ship hulls will now provide a variant with the same modules as on the best equipment variant of the previous ship hull level, to the extent possible, and hide the empty hull as obsolete in that case.”

So... does this include that proper Battlecruiser and Light Cruiser hulls and corresponding large tech silhouette BC and CL icons are now made available on the Tech Tree and Ship Designer? That would be GREAT! :-D

Naval AI is just as bad as pre 1.6. Raiding occurs as close as possible to the enemy capital (that’s good), but it will do it within air coverage(dumb). And it still concentrates all raiders in a few regions rather than spreading them out more.

Raiding needs to be as distributed as possible amoungst as many sea zones as possible, to spread enemy ASW as much as possible. Then ASW task forces will have a lower detection chance, and raiders would always get first hit.

Allies should only be able to start to win the IC war in convoy wars when ASW ships (which are rarely sunk and continue to grow in #), have vast numeric superiority and have all doctrines.

Even AI vs AI, UK is slaughtering GER subs. It’s got nothing to do with sub stats, it’s all about poor location of raiding zones.

also what feels completly wrong in this DLC, you get no Naval Exp by hunting transporters? but when you train your ships you get a ton of them?
when destroying the complet trade geting all transports of all allied nations you get no XP and its neerly useless AI can still use there aircrafts without fuel ather nation how are sending Aircrafts dont need fuel at all they fly for free (no supportline needed). by fishing out all transports of the world you just reduce same produktion lines...gj.
there should be penaltys in stability when to less resources.. so maybe its better to kick a produktion line.

also befor this shity DLC come out there was a juse of Bf109 Spitfire and so because the cost only 1 Fuel and the nextone already needs 2.. now they cost exaktly the same realy? it looks like you dont understand your own balancing....

This isn't always the case - playing as Britain, I've had German subs hit me off the coast of Africa, and in the Central Atlantic, and once off the SE of Madagascar (which they owned at the time), as well as the Western Approaches and other places. They are focussing on the Bay of Biscay though, which isn't necessarily the best place for them to be doing this.

Axe, run some HO tests as GER AI using ‘39 scenario. Raiding location is bad, very bad. However it might be due to the daily changes on 1.6.1 beta. I’m now already forgetting if I tested this out on Wednesday’s 1.6.1, or Thursday. I know they are trying, very hard, I just haven’t recalled seeing a raiding AI change mentioned in the notes yet.

Happy with the dlc. Hope the existing issues with no armor for AI Germany are fixed soon. Very happy that research is being looked at. I personally would keep the speed of generating XP but make it usable for more techs (increasing the army XP gain as well). I would keep the length of doctrine research as it was these, that were the most based on real life experience. Techs should be a bit faster to research. Please do not increase research speed from trade technologies as this really does not make much sense in the historical context. Some maybe, but not the huge differences of 20 percent as was suggested before from free trade and 2 from partially closed economy. This would lead to extremely ahistorical outcomes. SU needs more research and IT and Japan could use some as well.

UK could need some additional MICs and manpower in the beggining as it is true that they are really limited if they want to defend more than just home isles, as was pointed out already.

Good to see the changes on the US. Should address the US best military tech and doctrines without ever fighting outcomes.

I'm just playing at the moment, but I'm still on 1.6.0 - I'll run some hands-offs down the track, but figure that the patches are going to mix things up a fair bit in any event. Once 1.6.1's settled, I might do a few hands-offs and see what happens a bit more scientifically (ie, you give good advice :) I'm just keen to do a bit more playing right now).

Enjoy your playing, I certainly have, but want improvements before I sink in another 40hr play through. I figure I’ll help with 1.6.1 testing because I have a feeling once 1.6.1 closes, 1.6.2 will be +1 month(s) later.
