Prison Architect 2 | Delayed release

Hello Architects,
We have some difficult news to share: unfortunately, we will not release Prison Architect 2 on September 3rd because we need more time to improve both the game's performance and its content. Our continuous internal reviews and beta test groups have highlighted areas that we need to focus on more, mainly performance and content, which we need to address before launch to ensure that you, the players, get a good experience in the game. We need to raise the quality a bit more to meet the standards we'd like to achieve with this sequel.

We are confident that the sequel to Prison Architect will be great, and we're looking forward to showing you all the new ideas brought into it: the switch to 3D, multi-floors, and the new behavior system that all bring a new dimension to the game and open new gameplay possibilities for the players. However, we want to make sure the game lives up to the franchise’s legacy and is released in a state that satisfies both you, our players, and the Prison Architect 2 teams at Kokku and Paradox Interactive.

At this stage, we can’t commit to a new release date as we need to re-assess the scope of the work needed to be done before the game is release-ready. Over the next few months, we will focus on improving the game and building a more robust release timeline. This also means we will be limiting our communication with you all until we have a timeline we feel comfortable with.

With this indefinite delay, preorders on all platforms will be refunded, and the preorder items will be added to the base game.

This decision aligns with our commitment here at Paradox to reviewing and improving the quality of our released content. We are confident that delaying Prison Architect 2 is the best path forward for the game, allowing us more time to deliver a high-quality experience that honors the legacy of Prison Architect.

This is not the announcement we hoped to make, but it is necessary, as we believe this will result in a better game for you. Thank you for your patience, and we’ll see you again soon.

The Prison Architect 2 Team

QnA

What is the new release date?
There is no new release date for Prison Architect 2 at this time. We will work on the game and as soon as we have a set timeline we will communicate it to you.

Is the game canceled?
No, the game is not canceled. We are confident in the game but we want to raise the quality before release, mainly the performance. We will communicate a new release date as soon as we have reworked the game’s scope and have a timeline we are confident in.

Why is there another delay?
To raise the game’s quality by enhancing performance and also improving its content. During our latest rounds of internal reviews and from continuously gathering feedback from our beta testers, some specific issues regarding performance and content were highlighted. We believe it is important that we address these before releasing the game to ensure that it lives up to its legacy.

What happens to pre-orders?
All pre-orders will be refunded in the upcoming weeks. The option to pre-order the game will be removed and the bonus will instead be added to the base game for all players to enjoy.

If you want the refund faster there are ways to go about this depending on which platform you’ve pre-ordered the game on:

If you have made your pre-order through Xbox, PlayStation, or Steam, you can reach out to the platform you made the purchase through and they will help you sort this out.

Players who purchased the game directly from paradoxinteractive.com will receive the reimbursement automatically, which may take a few weeks. If you want to get it earlier than that, go to https://wallet.xsolla.com/ and log in with the same Paradox account you used for the purchase. There, you will see all purchases listed, and from there you can request a refund before the automatic re-payment.

Why is it taking time to fix the game?
Prison Architect is a game with deep systems that all interact with each other, and this is also something we want to bring with us into the sequel, Prison Architect 2. Having systems like this in a game also means that a small change in one area will also affect one or more other areas, which we then also need to apply fixes to. Improving the performance has proven to be a task that will take time.

Is there going to be Early Access or Beta Access to the game?
There will not be an early access or extra beta access right now. We know what things we need to work with, and facilitating Early Access or Beta access for players takes a lot of resources from the development team. Right now we want to put full focus on the development and solving the underlying issues that we have gotten feedback through our internal tests and from our beta testers.

Will we get updates on the game?
We will limit our communication while we focus on further developing the game. We will resume updates once we have more precise information to share with you.

Can you explain what "lots of resources" from the dev team would entail beyond uploading the latest nightly version as EA/Beta? Why are small studios with far fewer resources able to accomplish this, but Paradox is incapable?
Not part of the team that handles PA2 but I can give a bit of a general Dev view. Betas & Early Access come with a slew of expectations. You can't simply put up the latest build and call it a night. Any update needs to be treated as a release, meaning that the build needs to be prepared in advanced, verified that there's minimal issues, requires Patch Notes/Change Logs and instructions. Afterwards you need to have people handle & respond to bug reports, look at and address feedback.

Especially with Early Access the expectation is that the feedback helps shape the game. That is manageable in early stages where things are more flexible but in later stages that is mostly a distraction that takes away resources from where the focus should be. There's also the expectation of frequent and high levels of interaction, transparency on major content planned etc.

There's very little studios that have run actually effective Early Access. Even Larian, which had a 3 year Early Access for Baldur's Gate 3, had the issue where so much of the feedback focussed on the Early Game that the Late/End Game didn't receive sufficient attention. This makes sense when you consider that people are constantly starting over with new updates, new people buy into the Early Access and wait to 'finish' the game until it is all done.

Personally, I think this game is going to end up being canceled. The new games being produced by Paradox just do not seem like they have a good track record. When a game gets delayed twice and then delayed definitely with refunds on pre-orders over seven month period, the writing is on the wall.

What is supposed to come next if it’s positive news? Like what does that press release like that even look like?

“Hey guys, this is Paradox. we have fixed all of the issues and now we are ready to announce a new release date. We were unable to do this before because Johnny the janitor had stolen the administrative password USB drive to the source code and he was hiding out in Romania for the past year.”

“Johan and his elite team of Roman sympathizers successfully carried out a mission upon his mansion complex. Johnny is now dead. We have successfully rescued the game and will finish the programming now.”

Seriously though the game is cooked. Clearly there are some major issues going on behind the scenes that we are not being made privy to. I hope that Paradox gets their act together because this is not becoming to the excellent standards for strategy gaming that I’ve been made in the past.

They need to double down on what they are good at. Making grand strategy games that are fun and interesting to play. There are all sorts of games that paradox has made in the past that could be revisited in a modern fleshed out way. Games like March of the Eagles, East vs West HOI ((Never released despite massive support)), Sengoku, Battletech. These game series are CRYING to be fleshed out and transformed into a series of games. There are all sorts of money that could be made.

Hire Johan as the CEO and it would fix everything. Make your best game designer the guy in charge.

Make his title Emperor Johan of Paradox Interactive.

Send my consultation check in the mail thank you.

Have you played Victoria 3 and understood the 'Economics of Scale' concept? For simple or repetitive tasks, like manufactoring or factory work, the more people and machines you have working, the more you can streamline processes and make things more efficient.

But with complex production processes, like software developement, where each person working needs to coordinate the work they do with everyone else, the inverse is true. The more people are working on a project, the higher the coordination effort required by each individual, and the less actual work gets done. Some of that can be mitigated by good management practices, but without exception

10 indidividuals working on their own will produce a lot more 'features' than a single 10-person team. Just that of course the 10-person team can tackle more wide-reaching projects that require more diverse skillsets, whilst single individuals would struggle with that.

But that's why small indie teams can deliver such outstanding and efficient work, whilst large studious constantly struggle with resource prioritization, QA mishaps, delayed releases... and that's before the whole passion vs profit factor comes in (indie teams working for a project by heart, vs developer teams working for a studio controlled by shareholders).

Mind you, this is not an excuse for PDXs overall questionable performance. I definitely believe their in the late stages of game developement studios (keep in mind, even Blizzard once started as a beloved niche company). But small indie teams outclassing larger teams in raw per-person-efficiency? That's just how it is and PDX is merely to blame for all the mismanagement on top of that.

This is good news. Instead of sticking to some release date but then release a shitty version of the game you have the balls to take responsibility and delay the game so its quality standard is good.

tip: stop giving release dates till a product is finished

It's title scheduled/planned under the old CEO/management. There is good reason she was told to leave. We are hopefully seeing the tail end of the consequences.
Hasn't she been gone for like three years now? I had no hope in Paradox at all with her at the helm, seeing how she came from the online betting industry and the mess that resulted in, but at this point it seems like a problem with the company's organizational culture at large.

Maybe it is better if this thing dies. You can`t improve perfect. And Kerbal Space Program 2 shows what happens when people desperately want to make a sequel to a beloved, innovative original.

They've confirmed on the community discord that it's still in development and not cancelled.
Okay, this is at least something. Thank you.
However, it would be nice if they'd also share e.g. some pictures or a small dev diary or something like that... I'd also accept something like "Christmas 2024 is coming soon..." XD

pretty sure this game is done for.
"life by you" was also not cancelled.... until it was.
"imperator rome" was also not cancelled, until it was.
"star trek infinite" was also not cancelled, until it was.
"The Lamplighters League" was also not cancelled, until it was.
the only franchise to really stand a chance of a bad release was cities skylines 2 and even that only stood the test because its a CORE paradox game, if they didnt support it and see it through it'd destroy paradox as a company if they abandonded it like they have done everything else last year post launch.

Those last three games weren't cancelled? They all released. They just didn't get the endless support treatment other Paradox games got because they weren't successful (And TBH at least for Lamplighters League and ST:I I don't think they were ever planning on long term support). Also, Cities Skylines isn't a core Paradox game, and in any case that point about not supporting a core Paradox game destroying the company is moot since Imperator did no such thing and that was a bona fide PDS game. And what do you mean "abandoned it like they have done everything else last year post launch"? Age of Wonders 4 and Victoria 3 both released within that year before C:S2, and they're still going.

I agree that it's not looking good for Prison Architect 2 and the game is most likely cancelled (Or at least, if it ever resumes development it'll start over from scratch a la Bloodlines 2), but most of your comment is just wrong for no reason.

Take all the time in the world! When this game, it's completely bug Free and has the best performance only then release it! Right now I feel this game, is forgotten. And that's a good place to be at! As soon as you announce a date then it's remembered.
And then people want it to be released! Only put a release date out when you are comfortable! Personally, I'd love this game to release this year, but I'll be much happier if it released in two years time and was completely bug free and had a lot more content. And performed a lot better. So don't be sitting in the office going. We need a release date. We need a release date.
You should be going, it's not completely bug free so, no release date!
