Developer Log - Stardate: 23705.8

In today's log, I wanted to talk a bit about why we wanted to make this game. A passion project like none other, and now finally everyone can learn about it.

The Idea

Every game starts with an Idea, and for Star Trek: Infinite the idea was to recapture the feeling of the Star Trek Strategy Games of the early 2000s. That mix of playing with the Star Trek ships, on big maps, and fighting the other empires for supremacy.

An important part was not to simply do a remake of Birth of the Federation or Armada. We wanted a game that captures the feeling of playing these. A modern take on the concept that they had, stories and gameplay from the Federation level perspective.

Something like that feeling you get from playing Stellaris.

Charting the Stars

We quickly knew that Nimble Giant was the perfect studio for this game. Firstly we saw the strength of their Master of Orion-remaster, and then during early milestone delivery where they were able to prove their mastery of the Grand Strategy Game. They quickly built up trust with Paradox and Paramount with their passion for authenticity and great gameplay ideas.

We laid out a path for the game to be in the established series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. At the point when we started this game, Discovery and Picard was still ongoing, and we wanted to avoid making something that would be directly contradicted in the shows at a later point. The Original Series and the Animated series could be referenced, but our style and tone should be set in the shows of the 90s.

It should mainly occur in the timeline of these series, and we should pick our visuals to match them, and our stories should reflect the storytelling they used.

We needed Diplomacy to remain a prime part of the game, and we needed to balance the perspective between major and minor powers in the Alpha and Beta quadrant. We needed to be better at telling the long story, focusing on the events that play out in the show, and how players can affect these.

With these choices made, a lot of the questions we had were answered, who were the major players in the game, what important events needed to happen, and how were we going to work these stories into the game, no matter what empire you selected to play.

Turbulences and Triumphs

The Trek universe is huge, and we really needed to focus on what stories we wanted to tell and what would amplify these and not distract us.
Should we have fallen empires like Tkon, Talosian or Iconians? No, these could appear in stories, but making them a faction with their own faction would not improve our stories.

Should we have all the quadrants? - While Voyager takes place almost exclusively in the Delta quadrant, the stories we were trying to tell were about the Major Powers in the Alpha and Beta quadrant. Including the Gamma and Delta quadrant was a distraction from our goal of telling stories about these four Powers. They can influence the stories, and we can have some interaction, but play should focus on the Alpha and Beta Quadrant.

Did we pull it off?

I believe we did, and we were lucky to get this confirmed when we started doing previews. People seem happy with our vision, and we are looking forward to showing this to more people.

In the coming weeks we will have several more developer logs, where we discuss all the aspects of making this game. How we approached new features or reworked old ones, how we're-focused on art and what type of new gameplay we added.

The work that has been done by Nimble Giant on this game is amazing, and I am so happy to have been able to work with them over these last few years.
We have already started showing a few pieces of gameplay in our trailer that was released last week (here, in case you missed it) and some folks in the gaming press have had opportunities to get hands-on, share their experiences and conduct interviews with myself and the team at Nimble Giant. Soon we will be giving content creators access to the game, so expect more from them in the coming weeks!

That’s not all, though, we will be creating more dev diaries over the next few weeks in preparation for the launch, so we’d love to hear your thoughts as we publish those. Our Discord server has been steadily growing with Star Trek fans since the pre-order announcement, so if you want to come and say hello, that’s where a lot of us will be!

I can’t wait for you all to see more.

I know a bunch of us had some fun taking potshots at post-2009 Trek (guilty!) but I do have a legit technical question hereBirth of the Federation only used material from the TNG-era, due to Interplay having the rights for TOS-era and Micropose having the rights for the TNG-era. (why studios ever split things up like that, I’ll never know)

I assume that is not an issue here, correct? For example, even if the setting itself is during the 24th century, elements from earlier settings can be included, in principle.

I’m a huge fan of the Lost Era of Star Trek, if only because the galaxy was being patrolled by Starfleet’s answer to the B-52: the venerable Excelsior class. Oh, and I’m also partial to the Ambassador class. Seems to me that it was the last era that Starfleet balanced exploration and defense properly, as opposed to TNG (lets send a massive luxury cruise liner to explore deep space) and DS9/Voyager (everyone outside the Alpha Quadrant wants to kill us).

Seeing how it isn't going to have any JJTrek/NuTrek in it, I am officially excited for this. <3

This 100%.
The mere mentioning of STD and STP in the dev log already made a knot in my stomach, using Bad Robot and Secret Hideout's alternations in any way will (almost certainly!?) grant the devs a bad reboot (yes, pun intended).

Good luck, I wish you well. :)
I guess you both missed the 2480s/LD uniform in PDX-Ruk's avatar?

Yep all this sounds exactly right! Very happy to see a focus on the 90's lore.

Great art too!

My biggest desire though is for the alpha and beta quadrants to feel as vast as they are. Lots and lots of canon planets abound! I hope to see a lot of events based on the stories of our favorite episodes!

Qapla!

Two of the pre-order bonuses is the California Class and the uniforms from Lower Decks. There's also Lower Decks inspired events.

The Romulan supernova from ST2009 was confirmed to be a scripted event in preview articles (you can also see a Supernova in one of the trailers).

Says right in the dev diary that the only reason Picard stuff wasn't included was because the show was still airing during development. It had nothing to do with them not wanting to add it. Since Picard is over, they can probably add Picard themed stuff in future updates/DLC if they wanted.

The two most popular Trek mods for Stellaris, New Horizons and New Civilizations, both use content from 2009+ series/movies, and I don't see anyone really being upset over that content.

Well we are talking PDX here. NuTrek will be a DLC.
I like the idea of the Cerritos.

On a more serious note, what does this mean for the NEw Horizon Mod?
Will this still be a thing or do we have to fear that PDX now has to go after this mod?

Thanks Cinaedus, but no, I didn't miss the Lower Decks uniform on the avatar...which is of no concern to me since I don't want to purchase Ruk's avatar (but maybe the game).

Did I miss it somewhere on the concept graphics though? Let's just see how it will play out in a few months from now. :)

It would have happened have before the announcement of the game if it was going to be an issue. That's how CBS/Paramount works going by what happened to the Stage 9 fan project.

The LDS uniform and California class are pre-purchase bonuses for the standard edition, and I think they also come with the Deluxe Edition no matter when you buy it.
You can see them in the pre-order trailer and they're on the Steam page.

And as I mentioned above, the Romulan supernova from ST2009/Picard has been confirmed to be an event in the game by a couple preview articles.

It does not come with the deluxe if it's not pre-purchased

The first Devlog about Cardassians should be named "Keeping Up with the Cardassians".

Fun ideas aside - I really hope we get engaging story events that entail multiple task and different approaches to a conclusion to have semi RPG/TNG episode experience. I think its a major part of Star Trek to have peaceful solutions and a ethical and moral angle on the situations at hand. And the solutions should be a bit more nuanced than A, B or C.
It should feel and play like a Mass Effect or Baldurs Gate 3 Side Quest or, obviously, like a single TNG Episode. Not all of them but many.

Then they should make that clearer on the steam page. The only place it says it’s a pre-order bonus is for the standard edition. It says it comes with the deluxe edition with no mention of the word Pre-order.

You take credits from a government that doesn't use money?
That's a complicated subject. The Federation does have money. It just seems that Humanity doesn't.
