Stellaris Dev Diary #214: Announcing “The Custodians” initiative and the free Lem Update

Greetings!

Today I am here to announce some very good news! Stellaris is not slowing down, but rather picking up the pace! We at PDS Green are very happy to announce our new “Custodians” initiative as well as the next free update, coming sometime after summer.

The Custodian Team
Stellaris as a game has been very exploratory, and the game has seen a lot of big changes over the years. I want to start by giving some insight into why we’ve chosen to focus on this initiative.

As we’ve released more expansions we’ve had to take longer and longer between each release, as we’ve needed to spend more time on focusing on quality, making sure each release is as stable as possible. Paradox Development Studio also looks very different today vs. how it looked just a few years ago. Things take longer, there are more processes in place, and there are a lot more people involved. Because each release is now further apart, it makes it harder for us to address some of the outstanding issues that might be affecting the community between DLC releases.

As we’ve added more content it's also been harder to polish and maintain all of the amazing existing content that we’ve added over the years. We want to keep creating new cool experiences for Stellaris, but we also want to be able to maintain a high quality for the base game itself, and for older content.

What we have done now is that we’ve staffed up, and split the Stellaris team into two teams that focus on different aspects of the game. One team, that we call “the Custodians” team, will focus on free updates that we aim to release every 3 months, while the “expansion team” will focus on creating new content for the game.

Examples of what “The Custodians” could be working on:
  • Tweaking game balance
  • Adding new content to old DLC
  • Polishing existing content
  • Bug fixes
  • Performance improvements
  • AI improvements
  • Multiplayer stability
  • UI and quality-of-life improvements

This does not mean that the game will suddenly “be fixed” or done (whatever that means). Together with you, the community, we now have a better opportunity than ever to keep improving the game. In fact, I think working with the community is going to be crucial to really make this work well. We are going to need to improve how we communicate with each other, so that we can better understand each other.

What “The Custodians” initiative is not
It is very important that you understand that “The Custodians” initiative is no magic bullet or quick fix. We’re in this for the long run, and we hope you are too.

We will need to manage our expectations and small, incremental improvements with more regular updates should be our approach.

Honoring Stanislaw Lem
The first free Update, the Lem Update, will be named in honor of the Polish sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem, whose 100th anniversary is being celebrated this year. Stanislaw Lem is famous for works such as Solaris, which has already inspired the Stellaris you know today. The Lem Update is currently scheduled for release sometime after summer.

To set expectations more clearly, the Lem Update will be a bit more ambitious and larger in scope compared to what you can come to expect from “Custodian” updates in the future. The reason is that we’ve had a longer time to work on it than what is planned for future updates. It’s also important to note that as of now, the Lem update is scheduled to be a standalone free update, and will not be associated with a paid DLC.

The Lem Update planned features:
  • Buffing the Backlog: We’re reviewing some old DLC to revitalize them with some new content. Humanoids Species Pack and Plantoids Species Packs will now feature some new gameplay features. By the way, did anyone say Necrophage Hive Minds?
  • Selectable Traditions Trees: You will no longer be locked to the same 7 tradition trees, but you will instead have 7 slots that can be filled with a tradition tree of your choice. The number of tradition trees will be expanded, and previous tradition-tree swaps will be broken out into their own trees (Adaptability will no longer be a swap of Diplomacy for example). Some new tradition trees will also be added to existing DLCs.
  • Balance Pass: We will be doing a balance pass on some existing gameplay systems and features.
  • And more..!: Quality of life improvements, bug fixes, AI improvements...

We will go into more detail about these features in future dev diaries, but for now I will leave it at that. We’ll be back next week to talk a bit about some thoughts regarding game balance.

No longer will your empire have to suffer the mediocrity of artisans.

This seems unnecessarily hostile but you do make an excellent point about communication of what we should expect.
It wasn't my intention to sound hostile, just blunt. I've edited my post a bit, just to make sure. :)

Unfortunately it's a fact that the current state of the game looks something like this:

Want a threatening Crisis? Visit the workshop.
Want an AI, that can keep up? Visit the workshop.
Do you want a ton of bugs fixed? Visit the workshop.
Want a functioning automation system? Visit the workshop.

A workshop should in my opinion contain stuff like Giga, More Events Mod, Planetary Diversity or Guilli's Planet Modifiers, not essential maintenance.
That should be the job of the devs, which they hopefully live up to now with the reorganization.

Exactly so. To be effective, we can't have the Custodians showered with all kinds of balance feedback, suggestions or requests for improvements. If we could get to a place where the community can discuss those issues among yourselves and come up with a prioritized list its easier. I'd really want to be able to have some sort of voting for issues, similar to how Minecraft has an open issue log. We're not quite yet there tho, so we'll need to together figure out how to proceed.
I'm sure you're already aware of it but Coffee Stain Studios has a site for Satisfactory that seems pretty perfect - people post their requests, suggestions, bugs and feedback there and everyone else can vote on it, so the most popular or requested things float to the top. It seems like a good way to organise feedback rather than a forum. I'm sure it can't be lifted wholesale but maybe food for thought.

In any event, loving this update and new plan, and I hope it does well for Stellaris. Keeping the base game enjoyable and well maintained, and looking after older DLC, will hopefully also keep us all engaged and eager to buy the expansions you put out in the future, making it a win for everyone.

It would be nice to be a hive mind and have access to psionics (honestly, it's the most meaningful form of government for that), though I don't expect anything.

On the other hand, I am concerned about how the modified species can remain, since they are their own niche despite the fact that they are new variants of the existing types of species.

My only concern with a vote-based system is that it tends to favor the big sweeping changes over the smaller, more targeted changes. For example, I think Megacorps branch office buildings should benefit from build cost reduction bonuses. I doubt many people would feel very strongly about that compared with: Let's revise all the civics!

I'd imagine the dev team would be able to do their own weighting of features based on how easy they would be to implement.

A suggestion with five upvotes that would take half a day would probably beat out a suggestion with 90 upvotes that would take three months.

Thank you for your answer.
I think you'd do well to properly communicate those set expectations with the community.

Sorry if I am awfully blunt, but in my opinion a lot of the backlash your team received over the past months/years is due to high expectations.

For a lot of people like me, who play modded games, those mods and several others are the benchmark you guys have to live up to.

Some are just fed up with the fact, that they have to rely on mods for a proper game experience.
Call me old-fashioned, but fixing the game should be the devs' job and not the modders'.

Unfortunately it has become more and more common in the gaming industry that those roles are reversed. And they shouldn't be.
Those high expectations apply to modders too, sir. Content development is content development, except modders don't get paid and thus do not need to meet quality expectations that 'customers' have. And if you're really just refering to "fix" mods, the reality has been commercial concerns, which grekulf will still face. And I, for one, don't want another half-baked merge of an over-hyped AI mod.

So eventually every species type will get their own gameplay mechanic, like Lithoids do? YISSSS!

OMG YES! This is exactly what I've been longing for since the tradition trees were implemented. Bigger, or more tradition trees! I don't like playing with gameplay altering mods, like the one that adds more trees, so I'm completely utterly hyped out of my mind that you are actually adding more freaking tradition trees and that we can pick and choose our 7.

Would be great if they went through every DLC from the oldest to the newest with each patch to see what they can bring up to date in terms of coding and quality of life.

Leviathan was great, but its content does not behave like similar content released with newer DLC. One aspect of that being the communication with the artisans and curators, etc, always wants to end communication after each purchase, but what if I'm not done?

I would also like to see them bring all megastructure communication into line as the older ones from Utopia does not give similar notifications like the ones from Megacorp (and maybe even fix the first stage of the Dyson sphere being off center).

Small things like that do wonders.

"Oh yeah, baby, that's what I was waiting for!"
Anyway I hope that other Origins will get a tweak making them compatible with certain authorities/civics like Syncretic Evolution for the Hive Minds, a double species Hive Mind always intrigued me, and Shattered Ring with Agrarian Idyll.

I’m really happy you brought this up and acknowledged it, because as I’m reading up on the thread and seeing people make these suggestions, the Minecraft log method was exactly the thing I was thinking of in my head, so to see that you’re on the same wavelength in that regard and specifically want to look towards that for a similar implementation really bodes well IMO!

It’s easy to get distracted by the noise, but I’ve got to say that I’ve really appreciated @grekulf and his team’s work over the past year and a half.

Looking back on the roadmap they laid out in 2019, here we are with espionage, the galactic community, a massive expansion to federations, and archaeological sites providing a model for more complex and dynamic events. People say dumb stuff about the devs on here all the time, but what I’ve seen over the past 1.5 years makes me very optimistic for the future.

Anyway, I created this account last week because I was annoyed at some of the stuff people were posting, but I’m glad I waited to post so that my first comment could be a positive one. Keep up the great work and have an amazing vacation.

This is an amazing way to do for all PDS (and EU4) games, I've read that you're certain it won't affect the quality and communication between teams, so that's the only worry I could have squashed. If this means the expansion updates are a bit slower, I don't mind. Using this method, you will keep the game fresh in-between the large expansion which is a big thing for me and many others; in the month after an update, you play a few games, then you play perhaps two more games until the next large update drops. This will definitely keep people checking in more regularly. Oh and also, finally a reason to buy the 'cosmetic' packs :)

This is probably the best update to the game since a long time. Many needed (and welcome) changes.
I have a few questions regarding the update:
-Will it include flavour options for certain civic combinations like for example Sacrificial MegaChurch, Subversive Cult and Band of Blood? Building a generc Temple of Prosperity in that situation seems a bit bland.
-Will Rogue Servitors be able to start on a Gaia World?
-And will there be more AI personalities?
-Will there be other uses for food than being eaten and being thrown into a Bio-Reactor? Maybe something for hiveminds?
-Will Feudal Society recieve a rework?
-Will you revisit the scrapped origins from federation like Escaped Slaves?
"Oh yeah, baby, that's what I was waiting for!"
Anyway I hope that others Origin will get a tweak making them compatible with certain authorities/civics like Syncretic Evolution for the Hive Minds, a double species Hive Mind always intrigued me, and Shattered Ring with Agrarian Idyll.
Double species hivemind could potentially work. The problem is that it would take one of two forms
-Aphid farmers - Secondary species is basically lifestock.
-Hive specialisation - Start with gene engineering technology and several specialised traits.

Being fair I would enjoy being able to choose two origins that aren't contradictory to eachother. It would increase the ways you can roleplay. Postapocalyptic Syncretic Evolution gives me fallout vibes.

Is it possible at some point to think about a "Custodian" branch on steam which will stay here on a long time perdiod ? With of course no guarantees that will go into the game but... A perma feedback is possible with this type of feature.

You had me at "the number of tradition trees will be expanded"
I have been waiting for this since Utopia was released. It's happening! I'm feeling as hyped as I was for the release of the game!

The feedback we're looking for will be targeted feedback, to keep the feedback within the scope of the work we're doing at the moment. So instead of "What do you think we should fix?" the question will be "What do you like/dislike about x game feature/mechanic/etc?" although we can't completely rule out the first type of question either.

We've received some extremely useful feedback from the community, and want to continue the back and forth, as it benefits everyone to have this type of relationship. Again, the final form or pipeline for submitting feedback hasn't been settled on, and there are a number of different options we're exploring.

Stay tuned. :D
