Stellaris Dev Diary #263 - Announcing Toxoids

Hello everyone!

Today we’re announcing our next Species Pack that will be released alongside the 3.5 “Fornax” update, the Toxoids!

Whether you burn the future for the benefit of today or scavenge the past, Toxoids are survivors. Toxoids gives you the chance to gamble the future of your planets for immediate gains, and make the tough sacrifices necessary to survive a hostile galaxy.

The Toxoids Species Pack will be bubbling over with things such as:
  • New Origins:
    • Knights of the Toxic God: In the depths of your homeworld, rumors rumble of a true power buried under the toxic sludge. Do you dare to dredge up the secrets of your past - and potentially unleash them upon the galaxy?
    • Overtuned: The candle that burns the brightest, burns itself into the galaxy’s memory! Play as a species that can gain more and more traits at the cost of its own lifespan, and live for today without worrying about sticking around for tomorrow!
  • New Civics:
    • Toxic Baths: Grow your population fast with a fresh infusion of mutagenic sludge - so long as you’re willing to tolerate the costs to your planet and your people!
    • Scavengers: One empire’s trash is your empire’s treasure! Don’t be too proud to harvest debris and destruction for quick construction projects of your own.
    • Relentless Industrialists: If you’re going to keep up with demand, you’re going to have to learn to ignore all of those petty regulations and negative opinions. The surviving population will thank you for all of the resources you gain!
  • New Traits:
    • Incubator: Repopulate quickly when your planet is empty, but those growth facilities can fill up fast!
    • Inorganic Breath: Your own people are a source of valuable exotic gasses! It’s a shame the respirators are so expensive.
    • Noxious: Other species can’t stand being around you, and it seems like your mere existence is making your planets awful places to live. On the other hand, other empires have a very difficult time wanting to fight or subjugate you, and it’s hilarious to see the look on their faces when you’re in the room!
    • Exotic Metabolism: You’ve adapted to ask “are you going to eat that?” where other species would be calling the hazmat team. Eat faster, live longer, and enjoy a terrifying rainbow of flavors!
  • New Cosmetics: Species portraits, ship models, and cityscapes that only a mother could love.
  • New Advisor: Grow your empire alongside a relentless source of noxious sarcasm!

The Toxoids Species Pack and the Stellaris 3.5 “Fornax” update will be released on September 20, 2022, and will be playable at PDXCon this Friday and Saturday at Münchenbryggeriet here in Stockholm.

I doubt it. But it'd be cool if Toxoids can pull something valuable from Toxic Worlds similar in nature to how Aquatics can grab stuff from Ice Worlds, eventually turning them into Barren worlds.
Seems like they can according to the banter. Honestly it would be very odd and blank if they can't. All those portraits just scream hostile and toxic environment. I suppose that the colossus can make normal planets toxic and i hope that they will be a terraforming tech for other species to be able to terraform toxic world, making the toxic worlds of toxicoids a bit more catching eyes for regular empires.

Though, this will probably be the first species pack I won't purchase. I don't think it's badly done, and the origins/civics sound fun. The ships and buildings also look great.
But the designs are a bit too repulsive/disgusting for me (as in purposefully ugly, not bad designs) I mean the second portrait in the steam screenshot that shows all the portraits looks like it's straight out of W40k. Ew....

Though glad for everyone who likes them.

I find it interesting that although the portraits don't look bad, they kinda don't fit that well within the Stellaris' aesthetics

I wonder how inhabiting toxic worlds will work. Like if it's what I thought and it leads to some sort of mild terraforming before you can inhabit it. Or if it's colonizable directly, which seems like it might cause problems, and why you can't inhabit terraforming candidate barren worlds. Maybe very limited pops/districts with higher upkeep?
 
Welp. I'm almost 100% gonna get this. If you can't tell from my profile picture, I love the ruthless industrialist trope, and having a DLC centered around it is pretty nice. I hope the DLC isn't too mechanically isolated from other game features, but I'll definitely enjoy playing around with this nevertheless.

Will Toxoid worlds get defence bonuses against enemy invasions?
Invading a land of toxic sludge can't be much fun whether you are poisoned by it (as an organic Space Marine) or corroded by it (as a shiny metal soldier).

I wish this had a bit more "science" flavor than "Glowing Green Goo Is Good To Us, Actually" but the art is really good. Might be a pack I get just to interact with even if I don't use them much myself.

It's a good concept. Design space I hadn't realised was untapped. The one concern I have is on what sort of detail there'll be in the flavour text and advisor voice lines. Certain kinds of humour dancing around the topic of particular types of filth are very hit-or-miss.

It still feels weird that every single portrait pack gets it own room, but Plantoids were never retroactively given one. :(

I hope there will be a Megacorp equivalent of Relentless Industrialists? It would be weird if there weren't, I mean, it is such a good fit for empires like Chinorr.

With all these species packs it would be great if there was an "enforce theming in random empires" checkbox or something. So if you turned it on then the aquatic portraits could only show up on ocean, continental, and maybe arctic empires, they would be much more likely to show up on oceans than any other portrait, and all aquatic portraits on ocean planets would have the aquatic trait. Similarly random necrophage empires would start with a necroid portrait etc.

Obviously player empires could still be whatever, and you could leave it unchecked if you wanted the current pure random, but with all these neat themed portraits and civics and stuff it would be nice to have an option for stricter theming.

Are these linked like Anglers and Aquatics were? Like you can just have the trait, or you get some additional features and the locked trait by choosing the civic?

Species Packs are all over the place though. For example Molluscoids have a bunch of ones that look aquatic, arthropoids could reaistically live anywhere, and so on
