Stellaris Dev Diary #355 - It Belongs in a Vivarium: Announcing Grand Archive

Stellaris Grand Archive Logo

I’m pleased to announce that the third Episode of Stellaris: Season 08, the Grand Archive Story Pack, will be released alongside the Stellaris 3.14 ‘Circinus’ update on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024. This release completes the Stellaris: Season 08 Expansion Pass.

"The Grand Archive preserves and exhibits the most valuable artifacts we have collected throughout the galaxy..."

The galaxy is vast and filled with artifacts!

Grand Archive adds 151 specimens to the base game, but we have revisited all of the content ever created for Stellaris to add more. The overall total is over 240 unique specimens!

Collect them all and display the prize pieces in your own Grand Archive.

Specimens on Diplay

“This is no mere rock collection.”

“…Reserved within is also a dedicated Vivarium for live Space Fauna containment and observation.”

Contained within your Grand Archive, the Vivarium is a controlled environment where wild space fauna can be cared for and studied. Space fauna in captivity will grow faster and breed more easily than in the wild. These creatures can then be dissected for research, resources, or their genetic material.

With the development of the Controlled Mutations technology, Space Fauna can be customized to form a fleet which will grow and become stronger over time.

Space Fauna caught by a Gravity Snare

“These non-lethal projectiles can safely capture and transport Space Fauna to our Vivarium, where they can continue to reproduce new specimens of their kind.”

The void is full of life.

Two new forms of Space Fauna are coming in the Grand Archive Story Pack.

Cutholoids are ambush predators that lurk within asteroid belts, waiting for prey.

Cutholoid attack!

“Culling and dissecting these creatures will allow the harvesting of their Genetic Material for cloning purposes as well as other resources.”

Voidworms are a more active parasitic threat with a full life cycle that can grow into a mid-game Crisis if their populations are left to breed.

Voidworms on the move

"If this variant species were allowed to spread unchecked, it could upset the balance of the galactic ecosystem entirely."

“With the mysteries of the galaxy at our doorstep, there is everything left to learn.”

The Grand Archive Story Pack comes with two Civics, two Origins, and two new Tradition trees, each focusing on either different aspects of coexistence with Alien Fauna or the hunt for the hidden mysteries and treasures of the universe.

Civic, Origin, and Tradition icons

The Corporate, Hive Mind, or Machine Intelligence versions of these Civics require access to their Authorities - MegaCorp, Utopia, and either Synthetic Dawn or The Machine Age, respectively.

Looks like I can retire an old suggestion, and that the list of empire modifiers may become less cluttered.

A question lingers. Can we steal, claim, trade or buy artifacts?

Voidworms are a more active parasitic threat with a full life cycle that can grow into a mid-game Crisis if their populations are left to breed.
Thought 1:
"Space eels".

Thought 2:
If Void Clouds make it through both Cosmic Storms and The Grand Archive without being updated or something, my sigh will be deeper than the Great Wound.
(They could even ideally get a midlife crisis of their own, based on their effluvial offspring ability.)

Nice, this looks like a cool DLC. I hope if we go cyborg ascension/are a MI empire we can add cyborg traits and see them visually :) Give me Moya and Talon!

I am begging Paradox to release a DLC that isn't one random bloat system with near-zero strategic or roleplaying value but at full price. First astral rifts, then storms, now collecting rocks? Do you hear yourselves? And after such a great rework like the leader DLC? If rifts, storms, and more fauna were all collected into a single DLC themed around nature or something, that was thought through and balanced, maybe it would have been great. Instead we keep getting half-assed unbalanced bloat systems and more gimmicky civics and origins I am going to have to scroll through each time I make a civ. Please stop. The quality drop-off is absurd and until now I've bought every DLC on principle.

Very amazing, much appreciated. Thank you.

One question irks me now. Will the mechanic to steal, conquer, whatever mechanic be expanded with the new DLC / patch?
As of now I can only hope that the RNG is smiling when I get boots on the ground. With the new archive would I be able to steal them there?

I'm sure they are going to have a midlife crisis when they see those Voidworms get a Crisis based on a mechanic they used to have since the very beginning.

I see you are a man of culture. Tremors is my favorite monster movie.

Grey Tempest Vs Great Khan Vs Void Worms. Go.
Me in a fortress in a corner of the galaxy watching the chaos unfold.
It is a great feeling to move your entire empire into the L-Cluster and watch the rest of the galaxy burn. You can build 3 Ringworlds (with each one having their own Dyson Swarm), a Dyson Sphere, a Matter Decompressor, and still have room for a number of other megastructures and a Habitat in all the non-ringworld systems. Fortify the terminal egress for maximum protection and enjoy the show.

I only read the first page, so sorry if I missed this...

But are we not getting an organic ship set with this? I really can't believe we haven't gotten one yet... if not more than one. We have been asking for one for years, and it should of been added back when you could make alloy out of food.

Disappointed that there is no mention of Fruitful Partnership or Cordyceptic Drones since both of those should tie into this DLC very easily, not even just a small line of "some older civics reworked to work with this". Be really sad if we get a space fauna DLC and the existing space fauna options just become outdated less useful versions of something anyone can do with a few techs.

Grand Archive isn't a bad name.

But I want you to appreciate the missed opportunity when you failed to name it Collectorus.

I doubt that they'll ever add an organic ship set that doesn't have a metal-frame base. That'd take away from the Prethoryn's shtick. (With a metal frame, it looks less advanced than the Prethoryn but still keeps the biotech theme.)

For the same reason, they won't release an energy ship set.

I mean, those things always had synergy

If you take both you can have your cordiceptic ships eat the fruits and drop them on planets of your choice

Might even work with bubbles and potentially dragons and leviathans, as well as scourge fleets?

I assume the same mechanic that's already ingame will just automatically work for the new fleets

Stellaris needs more toroids in general. Perhaps you could randomly happen across giant toroidal superweapons left by a now extinct ancient Empire...
It is the will of the gods, afterall!

I would be okay with this but the cost to do it should be representative of the potential power available and maybe even cause a set back to science output as a result of being 'masters of none'. That is, if it were possible to get 3 picks at creation and 4th... whenever.

Or just keeping it as is and making the 4th pick a late game relic? Ok maybe doesn't have to be so penalizing.

Worth a considering I think for sure.
My take on it is move the third civic slot to the beginning just so we can fully flavor our empires from the start and then make the tech unlock the sixth council slot or something.

In the giga-museum-archive there will be special zones for breeding animals.
Question.

1. Will some nano-table take into account the collection of animals from different planets where you met predatory fauna and a valley for a zoo.

2. There are mechanical creatures in the galaxy (mining drones, dreadnoughts and other guardians). Will there be some tab or table in the archive dedicated to the department in this museum that deals with mechanical experiments with parts from these mechanisms
