Stellaris Dev Diary #77 - Ethics Voice Packs

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. This week’s diary I’m taking charge and going to write about Voice Over’s for the (unannounced) Story Pack coming alongside the 1.8 ‘Čapek’ update! We still can’t tell you any further details about the name or release date of the Story Pack, but stay tuned for future dev diaries!

For the upcoming Story Pack we felt that we wanted to experiment with VIR, our friendly advisor, see how it would feel to have different set of VO cues depending on your Empire’s ethic. A VO Cue is a term that we use to describe a Voice Over line that triggers at a certain point in the game as for example “Hostile Fleet Detected” or “Research Complete”.

We started with a test case in-house to try it out and we concluded that it was a great experience! From then on we moved on with the process and allocated time to write unique script for each role, character description, casting, auditions and finally recording sessions. It has been personally a long and hard process but in the end I’m really pleased to finally show of 3 samples out of 10 Voice Packs!

There will be a automatic settings for the VO Packs in the game so that the VO will switch depending on what Ethic you start with in the game and also switches while you're playing if you decided with switch Ethic's in your campaign. If you're not into that you will be able to select with set of VO Cues you want to play and you will always be able to switch back to the original VO if you desire.

Now that you have heard some of the results you might ask yourself how the whole procedure works with recording VO? So I’ll describe to a certain detail how the whole process goes by. :)

First of you need to write a script and if you have talented Content Designers. and we do have in our team, there is no problem to get good a script. Once the script is complete and approved it gets handed to me and I take it to the next step: Casting!

Casting of it’s own is also a long process which takes time. With help of a Casting Director you can get in touch with several possible Voice Actors that can help you to deliver the best result out of each script. When you have picked out potential actors that you think will suit for the role, you bring them in for a audition. In an audition you let the actor read a certain part of the script which usually depict the character the most and also give the best material for the Voice Actor so that they can perform as good as possible. After all the auditions are done you pick the actor that suited the best for the role. Sometimes during auditions actors comes for a certain role to read but during the session you realize that the actor would be more fitted for another role and that happened to our Militarist! We brought her in to do a audition for another role first but while she was reading the part for the first role I heard that she might be better suited as a angry general, so I asked her to try out for the Militarist and it was a really good fit! So good that we ended up with her as the Militarist.

With all the casting/auditions done you move on to the actual recording session, get as much possible material from your actors. It is important that you’re there to act as a “director” for the actors so that you can give the instructions and guidelines so that they can give you all the right emotions and takes that you require for your character in the game.

As soon as the recordings were done I moved on to editing. There is a lot of editing when it comes to VO since it is not only about how the recording equipment sound but also the sheer amount of assets you need to go through..

While editing you usually “zoom in” really close in the waveforms of the recordings to mess around/cutting noise such as clicks and pops. So yes, we Sound Designers tend to get really nerdy when it comes to VO editing:

After you have done all the editing which is removing “clicks” and “pops”, ugly breath takes, add fade in/out, you move into adding “effects” to the VO so we can get that cool Robotic style. For each VO I gave them something else than just using the same settings as for “Default VIR”.

So in short terms that is how you record VO!

That's all for today! Next week we'll be talking about robots and robotic modification.

Would we be able to change what lines are used based on degree of ethics? Ie xenophobe would give you some lines of not trusting others, whereas fanatic xenophobe would have lines claiming your superiority over all others. Militarist as cooler, calculating whereas fanatic militarist is the 'blood for the blood God' type?

I wonder how possible it would be to put the voices on a spectrum, instead of directly ethics related? Have 3 different axes, corresponding to different personalities and different voices. Something like

Aggressive-Passive with voices ranging from angry to calm to serene
Supremacist-Inclusive with voice lines ranging from xenophobic/authoritarian to neutral to xenophilic/egalitarian
Technological-Spiritual with voice put through a semi-robotic filter/being more monotonous to the voice being "normal" to the voice being harmonious/musical/chorous like.

This could obviously be mixed in with the different ethics, but rather than having a "militarist" voice or a "xenophobic" voice, have a bunch of voice lines for xenophobic to xenophilic and authoritarian to egalitarian ethos, and then have them said in an angry tone, a regular tone, or a serene tone for the militarist-pacifist axis. Then finally throw the voice lines through some different filters to get materialist and spiritualist versions. Of course, hiveminds are fine with their voice lines, though perhaps having a special one for the devouring swarm would be good. Up next change the voice lines depending on what phenotype and what leader gender you have! :p

My problem with militarist VO is that it's quoting Shakespeare. It'd be better to avoid such overt references imo because it ties the VO to human culture too much.

Also I hope there's a way to change the VO mid-game to accommodate ethic changes.
Well the game is for humans. I don't think PDX is currently contemplating an inter species marketing campaign.

As mentioned by many others... militarist doesn't sound right. It feels overacted and a bit too 'fanatical'. I think the 'fanatic' part in ethics usually just denotes that they lean heavily towards the ethic, and not that they are all crazed zealot types.

Militaristic should be cold and efficient, so you get a sense of strict military structure and hierachy. The sound preview gives the impression that a bunch of primitive tribal warrior clan members from some medieval RPG managed to get into space.

But I like this idea. Just the other day during a multiplayer game my friends were talking about how having different voices would be cool (and how Stellaris is unique since most often sci-fi announcer voices in the games we played were female).

I also really hope there's a voice for synths... it could be like EVA from GDI or CABAL from NOD.

Imagine this Militarist voice while playing as the CoM. Doesn't really fit, does it?

Otherwise nice job.

Will probably add a ton to immersion. I personally think the miltarist is a bit to chaotic/meniac for the whole spectrum, though I guess that's an inherent problem when fitting such specific voices to something as wide as the ethics in Stellaris.

Kinda wished the militarist actress sounded more stoic, deliberate, and overall "commanding". She sounds more like the leader of space orcs than the admiral of a death fleet.

Is it the same woman who voiced the Commonwealth for the Utopia expansion? She should voice like how she did for that trailer

I'll jump on the train about the Militarist voice. Might work for Empires with the Warrior Culture civic but it feels less military and more space pirate or raider otherwise.

The militarist voice is not just annoying, it is stupid and a bit offensive. Who thinks that militarists should sound like insane Marvel Comics supervillains instead of, you know, actual professional military persons? Military commanders do not run around foaming at the mouth, despite what your peace-nik friends might have told you. Even George Lucas, a hippy-dippy if ever there was one, had the good sense to staff the Imperial Starfleet (or at least the speaking roles) with British persons speaking in a clipped, precise, military fashion, and not a bunch of loonies ranting and raving like Hitler in his last days in the bunker.

So . . . what exactly would an egalitarian sound like, anyway? Every other ethos has a good stereotypical sound to what you would expect from them, but I can't think of a good example for egalitarianism.

Cardassians are more Authoritarian than Militarist as defining ethos. I think our Authoritarian voice will fit that sort of empire quite well.

Talking about Cardassians... Next game, spawn disabled. -.-

Some kind of a stereotypical politician perhaps?
Where you can't quite tell what exactly they're thinking,
Maybe Democratic Crusaders could special phrases like when every an autocracy interacts with you
"the Despots have come to the table" and when declaring war they scream Sic semper tyrannis

Where can I find a Drill Sergeant voice pack for my militarist empire? Haha

"Private! You just lost another fleet, numbnut!"

"Hostiles detected, go get'em, soldier!"

"Hostile fleet engaged! Make me proud, kid!"

Hmmm... I'll download some cheesy TF2 voices... I could make some more with the google woman... So many immersion breaking ideas, I want to mod it!
