Tinto Flavour #20 - 23rd of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the content of Europa Universalis V!

Today we will be taking a look at the content of Muscovy, and its ‘successor state’, Russia, after Grand Prince Ivan III ‘the Great’ proclaimed himself ‘Sovereign of All Russia’. This is a special TF, because it’s the first one in which we show the content for one of the seven ‘Tier 1’ counties, those that we consider the most important in the 1337-1836 period, and thus, that have the most content in the game.

Let’s start taking a look at it, as usual:

The Grand Principality of Muscovy stands at a crossroads of political maneuvering, and economic troubles under the Tatar Yoke, and an ongoing power struggle among East Slavic principalities, each vying for supremacy within the fragmented Rus' territories. The Tatar invasion continues to cast a long shadow over the region and Muscovy, like many other Rus' principalities, remains a tributary to the formidable Golden Horde.

Guiding Muscovy through these complexities is Grand Prince Ivan Rurikovich, a leader keenly aware of the delicate balance required for survival under Tatar dominion. He has skillfully managed the principality's affairs through diplomatic initiatives and strategic alliances and now seeks to consolidate power and enhance Muscovy's standing within the Yoke, with aspirations to unite the Rus' land under one banner.

Country Selection.png

As usual, consider all UI, 2D and 3D art WIP.

Muscovy1.png

Muscovy2.png

This is the starting diplomatic situation of Muscovy:
Personal Unions.png

Muscovy starts in a Personal Union with a bunch of principalities, including Novgorod, which is a Republic that elects its rulers among those of other countries.

Tatar Yoke.png

This is the current starting state of the Tatar Yoke, with Muscovy being entitled as the ‘Grand Prince of Vladimir’ - or, in other words, the ‘tribute collector’ for the Tatars. We won’t talk about this feature today, but in the Tinto Flavour devoted to the Golden Horde.

These are some of the privileges that the Russian countries have available from the start:
Privilege Kormlenije.png

Privilege The Ryad.png

Priviliege Tysiatskii Office.png

Also, this starting Legal Code Policy:
Policy Russkaya Pravda.png

Here you have some of the advances available for Muscovy and Russia through the ages, as usual:
Advance Gatherers Tribute.png

Advance Pomestnoe.png

Advance Zasechnara.png

Advance Imperial Guard.png

And now let’s move into the narrative content. Muscovy has 109 Dynamic Historical Events available, while there are another 73 unlockable after having formed Russia, which makes for a total of 182 available DHEs - that’s what being a ‘Tier 1’ country means, in regards to content. Many of them will unlock very different types of other content assets, as you’ll see now:

Event Campaigns against Novgorod.png

This is an event that may trigger if Novgorod elects another ruler, as happened historically.

Kremlin.png

Kremlin2.png

If you build the Kremlin, there will be further events related to it.

Reform Razriadnyi.png

Event Sophia Komnenos.png

ReformByzantine Court Ceremonies.png

If Byzantium falls, and some other conditions are met, you might be able to marry a Greek princess, and proclaim your country as the ‘Third Rome’.

If you expand your country, you might be able to form Russia at a certain point:

Russian Empire.png

Russian Empire2.png

The Russian Principalities account for approximately 460 locations, so you need to conquer some more from the Golden Horde to get to the 508 required. I forced it through the console to show it to you, but one of our QA testers made a recent run, and he was able to form it around 1500, OOC.

When the Age of Reformation starts, there will be this advance available for the Russian countries:
Siberian Frontier1.png

That unlocks:
Pomor Outpost.png

Settle the Frontier.png

It’s also possible for a unique disaster to trigger, the Time of Troubles:
Time of Troubles1.png

Time of Troubles2.png

Time of Troubles3.png

Time of Troubles4.png

Time of Troubles5.png

Time of Troubles has many different events happening, on top of the DHEs:

If you overcome it, there’s even more late-game content, of course:

Reform Collegium.png

Reform Nakaz.png

Reform Speransky.png

Event Bolshoi.png

Bolsoi Theater.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! As today is Friday, this will be the schedule for next week:
  • Monday -> Tinto Flavour about Venice and Genoa
  • Tuesday -> Tinto Flavour about Serbia and Georgia
  • Wednesday -> Tinto Talks about the Orthodox and Miaphysite religions
  • Thursday -> Third ‘Behind the Scenes’ video!
  • Friday -> Tinto Flavour about the Roman Empire, AKA Byzantium
And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

If you are considering changing to transliteration, then maybe it's then only logical to use transliteration for Burghers and Commoners as well? (That is likely to be "Meschane" and "Krestjane" correspondingly)

edit: or "Meschanstvo" and "Krestjanstvo" to be in the same form as "Dukhovenstvo"
Krestyane* and Krestyanstvo*
Russian transliteration uses "y" for the "й" sound instead of a "j" like in the Polish transliteration.
But otherwise I agree
P.S.: shouldn't the "Kormlenije" system be renamed to "Kormlenye" or "Kormleniye" for the same reason?

I love that you've made it so locations required for country formation are now listed under region/area/province etc. instead of being listed individually.

Concerning the Time of Troubles, in EU4 there was no benefit to taking the False Dimitry as your ruler because it added a penalising ruler modifier which also specifically blocked the disaster from ending. Is that different here? Is there a "path" towards ending the disaster where you can choose to align yourself with Poland or Sweden, or even pull Russia towards the Catholic Church?

I’m really curious to see how the “ahistorical choices” in these events weigh up against the historical. I’m not sure I’ve seen too many examples in TFs where going the ahistorical route would be objectively better than just following historical
I agree. I think it is partially because many of the events establish some office or build a monument which gives some long-term bonus.

I could see the possibility for issues down the line in some cases. Oprichnina was eventually abandoned by Ivan IV who then despised it so much he forbade people to even mention it. Streltsy were akin to musketeers, soldiers using firearms. But at some points, they rose against the tsars and attempted a coup. Whoever side you are on, a coup attempt does not equal stability.

Other examples from the top of my head would not be in Russia, but take janissaries, who started as the sultan elite guard in the Ottoman empire and eventually became so powerful they could actually depose the sultan and install a new one. Or look at the st. Vitus cathedral in Bohemia - Charles IV started to build it, but despite the fact it took a lot of money and effort he died before it was finished. His son was less capable, then hussite wars happened etc. etc. The cathedral was only fully finished in the 20th century.

So, maybe some events could potentially lead to troubles (though I would like if they would not always lead to trouble - make it a possibility, not a railroad) and some projects could be too expensive, botched, abandoned etc.

How does the +10% subject income work? Let's say subject gives you 10 gold in subject income, does it?

A. Give 11 instead? Or
B. Give you 10 but you receive 11? Thus 1 gold appearing out of no where

Any chance of Moscow involving themselves in the Polish interregnum that led to the PLC? Ivan IV was a popular candidate among the Polish nobility at the time.

Also, they attempted to convince Lithuania to go Orthodox during their Christianization, is that a possibility?

Actually, both fail to convey the sound -- "Krestyane" would sound "Крестяне" and "Krestjane" would sound "Крестьане", so maybe the optimal solution in this case is to go for the much older version -- "Krestiane" ("Крестиане").

I think a situation would be a better solution for the time of troubles and would allow Russia's neighbors more opportunities to meddle in their affairs. Especially with the situation system allowing multiple different actions. In this case it could be supporting a false Dimitri or trying to push for a personal union. Acting in support of Russia could of course also be a path to take if that's what you fancy. It'd also allow for greater clarity about what can happen during the troubles, as opposed to waiting for random events (especially if you're not Russia yourself). Also, the conditions for it to trigger feel a tad too generic.

Are there events surrounding the rise of the Romanovs, or would that have to happen organically?

Question about time of troubles. Doesn poland/plc get something to install false Dimitry or even someone else (like a child of a current polish king) on the throne?

I think government reform "Razriadnyi" should be used as "Razriadnyi prikaz", because "Razriadnyi" is an adjective, which kills the meaning of the word and does not allow one (at least russian players) to understand its meaning. In history it was called "prikaz". Or, could you explain, why did you decided to pick an adjective for this reform? Mb i am unenlightened...
Also, i really appreciate Ivan "Kalita" buff, bc he was really the man who made Moscow strong among the others.

Forgive me if it's a dumb question, but why the name of the event is Sophia Komnenos while the flavour text says she's from Palaiologina dynasty ? If it's from when BYZ got annexed then she would be a Palaiologina as the Komnenos where only in Trebizond at that time ? Unless she's somehow born from both dynasties (even though I think I'd have heard about it if such an union existed) in that case you should stick with one.

... Ok after a quick search she indeed has Irene Komnene Palaiologina as an ancestor but I stil lthink it's weird to call her Komnenos in the event name. Did I miss something ?
The event takes dynamically the last ruling dynasty in Byzantium, and uses that dynasty to create the character, including the dynamic localization of the event (the event title, and the event description). The second text box is the 'Historical Info' box, which is a purely historical description (this is a new feature in EU5). This second box is something that the players can select to keep, or discard and just have the dynamic description box, with a game rule.

Thanks, that was intresting! I have some questions about St.Petersburg.
"Several events may trigger"
Do these events include major disastrous floods of the city? Are there any flavour related to Kronshtadt/Kotlin? Or something about some of Petersburg's many palaces and gardens: Tsarskoye Selo, Pavlovsk, Peterhof...? Any unique buildings, maybe?
Also, how the Decembrist revolt will be handled?
And shouldn't foundation of the city give some kind of a dock? Admiralty was one of the first buildings in the city, and it was important to build baltic navy there as fast as possible.
Event Decembrist Revolt.png

Ignore the background, I probably broke something by toying so much with the console, lol.
