Tinto Flavour #21 - 26th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays (some), Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at the two most powerful Merchant Republics of Europe, Venice and Genoa!

Let’s start taking a look at Venice:

The Most Serene Republic of Venice is the most important and powerful of the merchant republics in the Mediterranean Sea. It controls important trade ports and islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, which form the Stado do Mar, and many inland territories in the North of Italy, which form the Domini di Terraferma.

Nonetheless, the lagoon city cannot lower its guard, as new threats arise around it. In the East, the once great Byzantine Empire will not easily forget the Fourth Crusade and the Venetian involvement in it. In the West, the Superb Republic of Genoa and the Crown of Aragon are continuing to expand their influence, conquering more territory and dominating trade routes. And at last, the Signoria of Verona have grown to be a noticeable threat to the Domini di Terraferma.

What will the future hold for the Most Serene Republic? Will it fall under the pressure of its enemies, or will it rise to the top and become the indisputable ruler of the Mare Nostrum?

The 3 subjects of Venice are Candia, Ragusa, and Trieste. As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

As you may have seen in one of my forum posts or Reddit, Venice is now an island! Here you also have the full extension of its Stado de Mar, with all its subjects (which, at the highest zoom levels, have their name replaced by that of the overlord, as it happens here with Candia).

Venice is a very unique Republic, which starts with some unique reforms and privileges at the start of the game:

Venice Privilege Avogadoria do Comun.png

Venice Privilege Libro dOro.png

Venice Privilege Libro d'Argento.png

It also hosts some works of art, some of them sacked from Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade:

Here is a selection of the advances available for Venice:

And a few of its flavour events:

Let’s now take a look at Genoa:

The city of Genoa stands out as the most important commercial port in the Western Mediterranean, its Republic having expanded its influence overseas through trade and war.

After defeating the Republic of Pisa, it gained the island of Corsica and established a foothold in Sardinia. However, this might have been a poisonous gift, as it may now face not only the opposition of its inhabitants, but also that of King Pere IV the Ceremonious de Barcelona, self-proclaimed sovereign of both islands.

Another challenge may arise from the east, as a network of possessions has created the conditions for a commercial dominance over the Black Sea, centered around the port of Kaffa; although dangerous neighbors such as Venice, Byzantium, or the Golden Horde might be a threat.

Relying on our numerous Fondaco and wealthy bankers, will Genoa overcome these challenges?

The Genoese ‘mainlad’, plus its Mediterranean possessions.

Genoa also starts with a couple of unique reforms:

Since we’re not able to have two or more rulers for a country in the game, we’re portraying the Genoese Diarchy by having Galeotto Spinola and Raffaello Doria present as characters at start, and the bonuses you see in the reform.

Genoa also starts with some Works of Art:

It also has a quite important unique building:

And here you have some of the unique advances:

Genoa Advance Slave Galleys.png

Genoa Advance Genoese Crossbowmen.png

Genoa Advance 28 Alberghi.png

Here you have some of the flavour events of Genoa:

Genoa Event Monaco.png

Genoa Building Rock of Monaco.png

Genoa Event Andrea Doria.png

Event Doge Andrea Doria.png

Genoa Reform Great and Minor Councils.png

An old EU4 friend, coming back in a revisited form!

Oh, and last, but not least, and related to the Byzantine content that we’ll take a look at on Friday, both countries have some unique foreign buildings in Constantinople:

Genoa Building Galata.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! And tomorrow, there will be a Tinto Flavour devoted to Serbia and Georgia!

And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

As someone already pointed out Mestre should be owned by Verona in April of 1337
Translated from the Italian Wikipedia:
"With the conquest of Padua and Treviso, the Scaliger lordship began to constitute a serious threat to Venetian independence, together with the imposition of other powerful lordships, not only in Veneto, but also in Lombardy. It became crucial for Venice to take control of its own hinterland. The Castle of Mestre was one of the first targets, being taken from the Veronese on 29 September 1337, when it was conquered without blow by the Venetian commander Andrea Morosini, bribing the 400 German mercenaries on guard. In short, Venice assumed control of the entire territory of Treviso. The village of Mestre and the surrounding territory was since then governed by a rector with the title of Podestà and Capitanio: the first was Francesco Bon. In 1405 there was also the dedication of Verona; in less than a century the Serenissima had therefore constituted its own State from Tera."

Hello Pavia, does the Monaco event implies it can exist as an extraterritorial country? If yes, can we play as Monaco?

Ragusa should not be a subject. They were at most an equivalent to tributary from EU4. They were paying small tribute to Venice in exchange for full autonomy. So not only that it's not accurate but you are also locking down a very flavorful nation with rich history.

Is Fondaco only available only for Genoa and their own territory? I believe Fondaco should be available to both Genoa and Venice and it should be possible to perhaps build it on foreign territory to propagate maritime control and trade availability in those regions for the republics.

Are there any Advances available to Venice for conscripting oarsmen and sailors, as well as constructing armor and artillery? They were extremely proficient in drafting men for galleys and had the best quality armor and artillery in Europe for the good first half of the game.

Does Genoa have events regarding their involvement in colonization of Canaries and Hispaniola? They have founded the model for plantation colonization in West and they became connected at the hip with Spanish Empire through their investments and ventures, both through the Bank of Genoa and their navy and their plantations. Is Bank of St. George something that can be founded by Genoa, or is that something that's tied to a Banking state or something else?

Does Venice have anything to represent their heavy reliance on mercenaries on land, aside from their small number of good quality noble cavalry from Venetian noble houses. Perhaps advances regarding printing press in City of Venice and the universities under Venetian patronage in terrafirma? Venice really should have an option to assign governors into other Italian city-states and this way conduct diplomacy and also potentially annex territory without warfare.
1. It is a foreign building, that you can only build abroad.
2. Yes, it has some advances related to that.
3. Bank of Saint George is present, yes, but I'd like to rework it slightly, as the way we implemented it is a bit old/odd.
4. Game mechanics. I'm telling, as a Merchant Republic, you pretty much prefer to make money and rely on mercenaries to wage wars in the first century or two, rather than use your levies.

Hello! Amazing work as always!

In the “Zonta” reform I believe there’s a small spelling error. I think it’s supposed to be “choose” instead of “chose”. But it also depends on what it’s trying to say. I think maybe the first sentence could be reworded for clarity.

Also curious if there are events for Venice about Giovanni Caboto?

Obviously this is all subject to balance tweaks, but how often does Venice become a major player in the game?

In quite a few of the YouTube videos they got annexed very quickly so I think a few people are concerned that Venice won’t have any impact, which wouldn’t be ideal especially given how important they were in this era.

Does Venice get any Advances to represent its urban industry in production of chemicals, including glass, paper, dyes, shipbuilding materials and things of that nature? Venice as a city should be one of the most profitable per population in Europe with highly valuable goods available to them as well as trade of valuable goods from Orient.

Venice really ought to have some bonuses to fortresses and defending or conducting sieges, their construction and maintenance of their chains of fortifications was an important aspect of Stato do Mar, with Provveditore being in charge of funds required for such fortifications and Capitano for their garrisoning, which were manned by both permanent salaried troops and militia garrisons. Venetian chain of fortifications are today even part of UNESCO world heritage convention.

Regarding the establishment on Monaco, is there any event tying in with France, and England and the Hundred Years' War? In 1338 a combined French and Genoese fleet raided southern England, in particular the important port of Southampton, sacking the town, killing and raping many of it's inhabitants, and carrying off a large amount of plunder. A fair quanity of this ended up establishing Monaco's wealth and prosperity going forwards.

I may be mistaken, but tiers are related to order you can create tags, not to the actual empire rank
That's another thing, the tiers we see here are the starting tiers the countries have, Genoa is a duchy(tier 2) and Venice a County(tier 1), Venice was ruled by a Doge(duke in Venetian) so I feel like it should be a tier 2 at game start

@Pavía can you confirm whether Georgia will have Genoese BBCs as the Consulate of Savastopoli, as I suggested?

I dont think a BBC is needed. It can be represented with foreign buildings and foreign factories in Georgia, giving Genoa the ability to produce certain goods and also high trade advantage and capacity to be able to export them. Sadly the game does not represent tariffs which is how you would benefit form this. As the game currently stands, you would not benefit from it other than from an increased tax based based on thier production but you would not benefit anything from the trade sadly. Maybe give Georgia local increased tax efficiency in those places where they have the trade? Maybe a flat monthly income to represent the tariffs on those trades? I wonder if you can mod in sound tolls to represent tariffs. Then a % of each trade would go directly to your treasury representing tariffs. Then both would mutually benefit from it.

Otherwise you are just incentivise to expel the Genoese to do the trading yourself and reap the benefits.

If the Genovese Crossbowmen have been in use since the First Crusade, up until now (1337), shouldn't they be available in the Age of Traditions already? Not in the Age of Renaissance.

Especially considering their role in the Hundred Years' War.

what is galata / venitian quarter advantage for Venetia / Genoa ? The screenshot show an advantage for "the loc", so I'd assume ERE.
There's a bug related to that, they are designed to give that benefit to the owner of the building in the market of the location.
