Tinto Maps #11 - 19th of July 2024 - Scandinavia

Welcome everyone, today I’ll talk about the Scandinavian region. Part of it was the first maps we drew for Project Caesar back in early spring of 2020. Today we will look at all parts of the Scandinavian Peninsula (including Denmark & the Kola Peninsula). Greenland & Iceland will be looked at in a separate map talk.

Countries
SCA_countries.png

Scandinavia has only five location based countries at the start of the game. Denmark, who is in a bit of a crisis at the moment and their vassal Schleswig is in the south. On the peninsula proper, we have Sweden and Norway who are in a union at the moment as they share the same King. Scania was sold off to Sweden by the Danes five years before the start of the game.

There is no need to show off a Dynasty map, as Denmark does not exactly have a ruling King at the moment, and the rest is ruled by Magnus IV of the Bjälbo Dynasty.

Locations

sca_southlocations.png

While Scandinavia has a lot of locations, we have to remember that this is a huge area, and together with Kola & Karelia, it is the same size as France, Spain, Portugal, Italy & Benelux together.. The size of locations are smaller in the south, particularly where the population was and still is relatively bigger.

Provinces
sca_provinces.png

We have tried to follow historical traditional province borders here, but some ended up too big like Småland, Lappland or Österbotten, which were cut into pieces, and some are just too tiny to matter.

Now I wish I had time to write up a history about each province here, but I’ll just add a few fun tidbits.

Satakunta, which is the Finnish name, is named in Finnish like the old regions of Svitjod, which were divided into “hundreds”. It was also refered to Björneborgs län, named after Björneborg (Pori in Finnish), a town founded by Johan III when Ulfsby was no longer accessible from the sea. The regiment from the area was the last Swedish Army Regiment that has ever won a battle inside Sweden, and their military march is a song I think every Finnish Citizen want to play repeatedly on TV during the Olympics..

Småland, which is divided into Tiohärad and Kalmar Län here, should really be referred to as Småländerna, as there were 12 small countries there.. Compared to the 3 other much larger countries of Svealand, Östra Götaland and Västra Götaland. And now why is Östra Götaland not containing Kinda?

Topograhy
sca_topography.png

It's mostly flatland.. I went by the rule that if the peaks are less than 500 meters it's flatland, and you need to have over 1,000 meters and rather uneven to be a mountain. Norway is interesting there.. We do have a lot of impassable areas in Norway, making this one of the most fun parts to play in.

Vegetation
sca_vegetation.png

There are some farmlands in Denmark, Scania and in Götaland, but the rest is basically a big forest.. And up north it's even worse.

Climate
sca_climate.png

Yeah, well. There is a reason I moved to Spain..

Cultures
sca_culture.png

Most of the north east is still Sami, and the Finnish tribes have not unified into the more modern Finnish culture. We decided to call the modern Meänkieli with their more ancient name of Kven. We still have Gutnish on Gotland, but the Norwegian, Danish and Swedish cultures have been becoming more monolithic already.

Religions
sca_religion.png

The Finnish are mostly Catholic, but the Sami, Tavastian, Savonia, Bjarmian and Karelians are mostly still following their old pagan beliefs. There are still some Norse people in the forests of Dalarna and Västmanland..

Raw Materials
sca_rawmaterials.png

It is mostly lumber, fish, wild game, fur and iron. We of course have the famous copper mountain as well.

Markets
sca_market.png

Scandinavia is divided by the rich markets of Lübeck and Riga. A strong Scandinavian country will probably want to set up their own unified market.

Population
sca_pop.png

Not many people live up in the north..
sca_eastpops.png

sca_west_pops.png

sca_south_pops.png

I liked nice round numbers as estimates, but the team I hired for content design are mad men, and wanted the distribution to feel more organic.. For the far north of Scandinavia we know that people were semi nomadic, and that some people lived there.. But if it was 100 there, or 250 there or 20 there it's just guesswork..

And let's end with a quote from the Greatest of Poets..

Jag vill, jag skall bli frisk, det får ej prutas,
Jag måste upp, om jag i graven låg.
Lyss, hör, ni hör kanonerna vid Jutas;
Där avgörs finska härens återtåg.

Next week Pavia is back with some German maps…

Let's say, Sweden can convert 20 people per year, they would be able to convert the vast majority of these locations in less than 50 years

thats the lowest populated location in 5 years..

Hey, Im from Bohuslän and very into its history and I have some adjustments I would recommend.
1. First Uddevalla is in the wrong place as the city is located within Kongahälla location in the game so if you want to keep uddevalla you would need to add a location by splitting Kongahälla in two
View attachment 1165368

2. The current province of Uddevalla would be better off being named Hornbore/Hornborg(swedified) as that was the seat of the old Ting of the kingdom of Ranrike.
3. More generally the shape of Bohuslän here looks weird, as in its general shape.

View attachment 1165372

Off the top of my head I cant think of much more, but i could look up some old norwegian/swedish names for the locations as I have the books on if so it fits the era better. Keep working on this fantastic game!
Yeah as a fellow Hôtte from Bohuslän I fully agree, the changes would be more natural

Uddevalla should be Oddevold (norweagian orginal name) or Oddevall (Bohuslanic name)

Kongahälla is fine but should be pushed down, alternative name could be Kongahäll (Bohuslanic name) but not as important

Current Uddevalla should be named either Hornbore (native old orginal name) or Hornborg (swedified name), alternatively Hornbore could be called Svarteborg or Raneborg after the old Ranrike capital east of Hornbore

Strömstad is fine tho even if its historicaly not that significant

Anyhow its already cool to see some representation as this is a historical region mostly forgotten in games and media

A couple of things..

1; You flipped 'ØstJylland' and 'Wester Jutland'(also, why not call it VestJylland??)

2; Roskilde is located in the center of Zeeland, but it seems like you decided to place it in the east of the island, that comes off a bit weird..

3; I am pretty certain that all of Denmark is classified as oceanic and not continental, Denmark does not get nealy as cold as Sweden, Norway, or the Baltic areas for that matter, primarily due to the whole country being very coastal and close to the gulfstream, and Norway blocking a lot of artic winds from reaching..

An earlier Tinto maps than usual? Can't complain about that. However something that caught my eye at a first glance is the location name of Varanger, which is wrong on two levels, as Varanger itself isn't a settlement nor a town nor is it located at the location its shown, it is a peninsula, specifically where the location of Vardo is.

Technically the fjord is named Varanger as well.

Meänkieli is language though, right? It's right there in the name, so not exactly a culture. Which means calling the people who speak it Kven is a good idea.

yeah, i thought Kven was the better name, as it was used before the game start. Calling them Ostrobothnian is such a cringe name, as its a latinized name of a Swedish Colony name.

In the zoomed-in map of the southern Swedish locations, the edges of some of the lakes—namely Vänern, Vättern, and Mälaren—look jagged and pixelated. I assume the graphics for those are still WIP?

The Finnish name for the tribe Pohjalaiset means the same thing as Bothnian/Ostrobothnian. Pohja is the Finnish word for bottom while bothnia comes from the Swedish botten, which also means bottom. The county they lived in was called Pohjanmaa in Finnish, literally Land of the Bottom. I haven't heard any alternative name being used for them. Pohjalaiset is the correct word in Finnish and the official translation follows from it. (Itä)pohja > (Öster)botten > (Ostro)bothnia > Ostrobothnians. Maybe they could be called just Bothnians, but Wikipedia calls them Ostrobothnians, meaning East Bothnians instead of just Bothnians.

How will the Kalmar Union be brought about? Will it be an "organization"? A special mechanism?

Also would it be possible in the future to have names of trainable nations on the maps presented please :) And on this subject, will it be necessary to have a certain technological level to train certain nations?

As i can see on the map, will chance the setop on zealand. it will give more historical seens if the provens of "Roskilde" is split in to and the given som of "kalundborg". as by the time of the 1330'sCopenhagen was grove quite bige, and later in game will become separet from "Roskilde", and chancing the capital happende as the throne was occupy by a prince from german in 1440. Copenhagen also was promotet to a city wich will be seen as a rank of a location in game as it offically became a city in 1167. and the Provense of Zealand schould also incloud "Nakskov", as it was and still is seen as a part of the iland of Zealand and not "Fyn". but you can create the location of "nyborg" as it was a import city and will still make "fyn" have power if it losses "nakskov".

The area was consistently used as a means of attacking locations past it

I would argue these would constitute as raids more than actual military maneuvers. There was no attempt at capturing territory or fighting opposing troops, but simply to cause damage to the opponent. Guerilla fighting simply, with very small numbers of men. The validity of the wasteland would very much depend on what kind of combat we will be seeing in the game. If the game will allow such guerilla warfare to be preformed with tiny stacks, then sure, then the wasteland won't make sense, I will grant you that. However, if war is going to be represented like in Eu4, with large armies moving about, it makes very little sense for such an army to march through such terrain. On the other hand, if they include a proper supply system, perhaps like that found in Imperator, then the wasteland wouldn't be needed on the basis that you wouldn't take armies there due to the lack of supply.

Do provinces have dynamic names or will Uusimaa still be called Nyland if owned by an independent Finland? And if they don't will you be able to change province names manually?

In XVII century rulers of Sweden contracted Dutch builders to plan and construct multiple cities/settlements/fortifications due to their expertise in building on marshland (one of those cities is for example Göteborg). I'm not even from Sweden and yet I know about it, but Swedish game developers don't. This is embarrassing.
The game starts in 1337 so Gothenburg being referred to as Lödöse (its predecessor) is appropriate

Edit: I'd guess there's gonna be an event renaming it

Many great comments about Finland already! I won't repeat the ones about location names, just hope that they are looked at, and also some fixes for Karelia from the Russia map thread.

There is indeed need for more lakes. Might I suggest making Saimaa a lot larger and adding at least Näsijärvi (North of Tampere/Tammerfors), Keitele (around what is now Laukaa) and Kallavesi (around Kuopio). And yes, there is need for more marshes.

There also should be more islands between Åbo and Åland. No need to make new locations for them, just to make the map look right. This is not a 1921 League of Nations convention ;)

Perhaps add one or two locations of sturdy grains (still not sure I like that name) in Egentliga Finland, Satakunta, or Tavastland? Here's some maps of past cultivation in Finland, page number 432, page 6 in pdf.

Does the iron in Ekenäs represent the collection of bog and lake ore for the whole of Finland? First iron mine was Ojamo (Lohja, guess it's within Kyrkslott) in 1542, it fueled the mills around Ekenäs. But to my understanding, bog and lake ore were more significant sources of iron than mined ore during the game timeframe, there were over 100 small iron mills around the country.

And let's end with a quote from the Greatest of Poets..

Jag vill, jag skall bli frisk, det får ej prutas,
Jag måste upp, om jag i graven låg.
Lyss, hör, ni hör kanonerna vid Jutas;
Där avgörs finska härens återtåg.

From the same war, look for battle of Koljonvirta. Or battle of Porrassalmi from Gustav III's war. To replicate those, there needs to be difficult terrain. Something like most of the borders between locations being crossings over lakes or rivers or moving into marsh. Also, depending on what were the exact strengths in Porrassalmi (different language wikis give different numbers, I'm sure someone has better sources), it may be that there shouldn't be an automatic 10:1 stackwipe like there is in EU4.

You missed an opportunity to quote "Bit Kind, Morgen kommt der Schwede" by not doing Scandinavia after Germany ;)

Looks good, but as a native klarälvdaling i must protest at the naming of the fryksdal province. Today it belongs to Torsby kommun. Torsby is located in fryksdalen absolutely. But the current province of fryksdal is in a an area called klarälvsdalen. Fryksdalen is probably where you put jösse.

Maybe even finnskoga would be more apropriate

Would it be possible to split of the location of Lödöse in two to form a new location (1) called Utlanden?
This could better facilitate the competition and interest that the three northern kingdoms had over exactly this place, which was motivated by the great importance of controlling the Göta älv estuary. It became Swedish first in 1254 after being annexed from the Danes, they only controlled what would be the rest of the location of Lödöse before that.
It would also be easier to simulate the rise of the newly founded heavily fortified city of Gothenburg in the 17th century, as well as the declining importance of (Gamla) Lödöse as the most important trading city in western Sweden.

You can read more about the historical importance of Utlanden on the Swedish Wikipedia article linked below.

EDIT: I read somewhere that you like to name locations after cities rather than their geographical names. If that's the case I would call it Älvsborg (called Eluesborgh at the time), after the castle located there, which also is the name of the city that later formed around the castle.
