Hello, and welcome to another Tinto Talks, the happy Wednesdays where we talk about Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will discuss the mechanics of Eastern Christianity religions. We have grouped them into three main religions: Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, and Nestorianism. So, let’s start without further ado.



Orthodoxy

This is the overview of the Orthodox religion:

I’m taking here the Autocephalous Patriarchate of Constantinople, which has the custom name of ‘Ecumenical Patriarchate’, as an example.

Countries can Join an Autocephalous Patriarchate, if they’ve just converted to Orthodoxy; or, when they already belong to one, they can Change to a different one, or Create a new one:

The Seat of an Autocephalous Patriarchates defines the Leader of this IO, which unlocks additional effects and actions:

The main currency of the religion is Religious Influence, which already appeared in the Catholic TT:

You can do a few things with your Religious Influence. First, you can canonize a former ruler, making him a Saint:

The benefits you get from the canonization scale with the ruler stats. So better to make sure that you want to canonize a truly memorable former ruler!

You can also call for a Synod in your country:

Finally, there’s a unique type of work of art, Icons:

These icons not only give a modifier to the location where they are, but also can be used in a ‘Periphora’ to another location:

Miaphysitism

Miaphysitism is similar to Orthodoxy, with some differences. Here is the overview of the religion itself:

Same as Orthodoxy, it also has the mechanics of Canonization and Autocephalous Patriarchates, with these ones being the Patriarchates present at start:

However, most of these are actually empty due to being occupied by Muslim countries, with only Ethiopia remaining as part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Armenian patriarchate as the only one containing more than one country.

An integral part of each the Eastern Christians and their Patriarchates are their Tenets, defined in a series of laws:

The ‘Nature’ tenet is a hard–locked IO Law, that depends on each Religion:

Nestorianism

There is no country having Nestorianism as its state religion at game start, but the religion is nonetheless still quite spread in some areas. Here is an overview of it:

A final remark on a common flavor for all these religions. First, they have their unique flavor monasteries:

The modifiers are WIP, we want to make them somewhat different.

Is there any way to view all the extent of all the patriarchates on the map at once? Perhaps a ‘super IO’ for the religion that has no mechanical effect but assigns the members of each patriarchate a different color so we can get a cool map
That's actually a really cool idea, bumping.

What is the relationship between the Eastern Churches by default? If I play an Orthodox state, like the ERE or Georgia, and conquer Armenia, will the Miaphysites be Accepted, or otherwise be easier to become Accepted compared to Christians from Western churches?
Relationships between religions are kindred, positive, negative, and enemy. They're currently at kindred, as being the closest branches, which also allows for an easier management of their pops, compared to others.

How is the relationship between the Catholic and Orthodox Church handled?

Are Uniate Churches of which many were created in the games timeframe part of the game?

And most importantly for campaign goals of course: Can the great schism be mended?

Not sure if already asked, but is there currently or planned a way to mend the schism between the different christian branches for each branch*? I.e., can catholics, ortodox and myaphisite unite the churches somehow?

1. The three religions share some common building blocks, although not exactly the same. Orthodoxy is more based around the APs and the different interactions available, while Miaphysitism is more based around the different tenets that each AP has. We're currently how the Tenets work, because on the one hand, they could also be shared by Orthodoxy with some tweaks, but on the other, it makes for a better differentiation between both religions.

2. No, because an Autocephalous Patriarchate is an International Organization composed of the Orthodox countries that belong to it. But there are some consequences if Constantinople falls, as in real history:
But if byzantium stops existing who becomes the leader of the IO?

And the Christians of Saint Thomas they have a unique mechanic for them ?
Unfortunately, not, that would be too granular; they're part of the Nestorian religion.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think Ecumenical Patriarchate of Konstantinopol continued during Ottoman times as head of the Orthodoxy and even today kind of so I think there should be something representing it.

Was this AI generated or something? It makes very little sense to me.

Can you describe what happens when someone conquers a country with a Patriarchate:
1. When it's the only country of that Patriarchate
2. When there are other countries within that Patriarchate
3. When conqueror is orthodox
4. When conqueror is not orthodox.

Take into account that APs are IOs, and thus, operate with Countries; so it's not possible to have a 1:1 copy of the historical eclesiastical organization, in our game, it is just an (accurate) approximation.

Why is Circassia Orthodox in 1337?

The Catholic religion was adopted by the Circassians following Farzakht, a distinguished figure who greatly contributed to the spread of this religion in his country. The pope sent him a letter in 1333 thanking him for his effort, as an indication of his gratitude

My questions are regarding how these IO maintain their members.
I mean, is there any benefit for being in a larger IO, or is always just better to create your own.
Also, do you get a cb if a country leaves your IO, so that you can force them to get back to yours. Is there any way to invite fellow countries to your IO, dissolve another IO by force, or annex it.
I'm just trying to make understand why and how all of these IO will manage not to get dismembered in some years.

Just noticed; why is Alodia a "tribe" and not a Monarchy? And seemingly a low-level one at that. The capital at Soba was some 270 hectares! That's larger than the walled area of Paris! A "minor tribe" with 1.3 million people is... odd.
