Greetings,
I am new to Hearts of Iron series. I saw an advertisement for Hearts of Iron III, and I am interested to give it a try, since I like the topic of historical World War II a lot.
But, since at least from the screens, gameplay movies, and from the demo released prior to the launch of the game itself, I developed an impression that Hearts of Iron III looks like to be a very complicated game, and as such I am not certain that I will like that type of game. Hence, why I decided to buy Hearts of Iron I from the bargain bin instead, to get a feel whether I am going to like the degree of complication from this Hearts of Iron series.
Well, I have tried to play the game as Soviet Union with AI controlled countries 3 times so far, and here is the problem I encountered.
I played as the Soviet Union starting from 1936. The first time I played, the scenario progressed like more or less the way it was supposed to happen; I was attacked by Germany around end of spring 1940, Japan followed soon, then Finland and Persia also attacked me.
Taking lesson from my first game, then I tried to play again for the 2nd time. But, I encountered a slight problem in that Germany this time would not attack me until the end of the scenario in December 1947.
I tried to repeat playing the scenario again using the same steps I did in the 2nd game, then again, Germany seemed hesitate to attack. They just move around all of the bordering provinces without proceeding to attack, also they return control of lent military units to their respective countries a lot. No matter what size of border guards I posted, they still did not want to attack.
First of course I was happy that they did not attack as early as expected, so I had more time to prepare my country; but after a while they still did not want to attack well till the end of the scenario which I found not nice and dull since Japan also did not enter the alliance with Germany and it did not attack me like it did in my first game.
My question is, did I do something wrong?
Here is the list of what I did on the 2nd and 3rd game:
1. Applied the Anti Air Stack Penalty courtesy of Divine Shadow + sprite
upgrades and fixes from DR Rare.
2. Constructed forts and kept on upgrading them each year starting from
1936, from Pskov to Odessa.
3. When Molotov-Ribbentropp pact was in effect then I moved all border
guards to occupy the new territories that formerly belonged to Poland, all
the while making sure to construct new forts immediately in Lwow, Rowne,
Pinsk, Bresc-Nad-Bugiem, Blyialstok, Grodno, and Wilno.
4. Persuaded Finland and later Turkey into alliance with Soviet Union.
Am I not supposed to construct forts on the border so the scenario can proceed as how it should historically?
Have other players also encountered similar Axis behavior? What should I do so Germany will behave normally?
Well, I can of course decide to attack first Germany instead, but somehow it does not feel right to me since that was not what happened historically. And the sensation being under siege, undermanned, pressed on the economy and technological research front to keep up my head over water was what made me like the first game versus Axis as the Soviet Union very much.
Thank you very much for your insights into this matter.
