Main Military Soviet 20 April 1941

Following the relevations of continued German success - although the invasion of the UK has stalled over the last month - Soviet diplomatic and military planning has undergone a major change. Despite fears about German intentions and capability, it has been firmly decided to reject taking any hostile action directly against Germany. However, the situation in the Balkans has become a major source of concern, especially with both Hungary and now Rumania edging towards the axis.

Blaming Molotov for the USSR's strategic passivity over the last 4 years, Stalin has ordered military planning for invasions of both Rumania and Hungary - Kirponos' fears of being outflanked to the south are to be answered in style.

Stage 1, Operation Vlad, is aimed to knock Rumania out of the war before it has even had a chance to join. 6 Soviet armies including 3rd Shock from STAVKA reserve and 4 Mech from the Kiev front, have reinforced the old Moldavian Front in the Odessa MD. These armies are expected to over-run the Rumanian border troops (Rumania started to mobilise on 23 March), and secure a defense line in the Carpathians.

Operation Vlad is scheduled for 10.00 on 1 May 1941.

If Operation Vlad provokes no German response, an even more ambitious Operation Bela Kun will be launched. This will seize Eastern Hungary as a defensive line using 3 of the armies from the Rumanian attack and 4 armies from South Poland (incl 3 Mech Army and Malinovski's 2nd Shock from STAVKA reserve). Operation Bela Kun is scheduled to be launched on 15 May.

The new Soviet front will then run from the existing border with Germany to Bulgaria.

Given the shock this will generate, consideration is being given at the highest levels to launch SIBTS on the same day as 'Bela Kun' - but with the goals limited to an occupation of Finland.

Given that 'Bela Kun' will completely strip the Kiev district of reserves and all mechanised formations, this is a period of real risk if the Germans respond aggressively. To give Kirponos some support, 2+3 Tank Armies are being moved to the Kiev sector.

VVS formations are in place to provide air support in both stages of the offensive.

Relatively ambitious operation there, a broad but deep push. However, it being into relatively weak Balkan states, you should be fine! ;)

TASS News Announcement 11am 1 May 1941

May Day festivities across the Soviet Union were cancelled today as the crowds wished to show their quiet solidarity with the brave troops of the RKKA even now fulfilling their proletarian internationalist duty in Rumania.

There is now growing evidence of a planned pro-Fascist coup in Rumania:

{timing or what!)

The situation in Rumania has spiralled out of control. The legitimate government now fears it faces a fascist coup and has invited Soviet troops to intervene to maintain order. It is hoped that Rumanian troops will not resist our entry as our desire is for no loss of life on either side.

I think that 'Vlad' is a good idea, esp now that Rumania seems to be moving pro-axis, even if v slowly. It'll shorten my front, not lengthen it, give me the oil and a defense line in the Carpathians. As long as Bulgaria stays neutral, there is v little danger of getting caught in a pocket if the Germans attack. 'Bela-Kun' is more of a risk, its not the greatest defense area, and a German attack at Lvov could lead to the troops in Hungary falling into a pocket - If I pull it off, next step is to seriously upgrade defense at and around Lvov which becomes key to the whole front.

Rumanian defense was much more robust than we'd expected - they had, unlike the Finns, been able to fully mobilise - so no easy border victories with 75% of their divisions shattering in the hour.

AI control of some aspects went well, esp in the Northern Sector but 17 Army went nuts. It spotted a small gap up in N Rumania so opted to reach Constanta the long way around. By the time I noticed, it had 4 rifle divs SR-ing out of sector. Offensive has now gone in but the Rumanian Tank Div I wanted to pin has disappeared.

Work on reducing combat delays is paying off. Both 3rd Shock and 4th Mech handily disposed of their initial battles, and by 8 May were back on the offensive.

'Bela-Kun' will have to be delayed? So far only response has been Turkey deciding to mobilise and the Yugoslav GIE failed to honour its treaty with Rumania.

STAVKA 16 May 1941

things are heating up, cool!

Indeed ... coming nicely to a boil

Stalin is not happy ....

First it looks as if the UK is on the verge of collapse and that really does leave just him and Adolph ...

Second, even into the 3rd week of 'Vlad' and the Rumanian resistance remains fierce, especially on the approaches to Bucharest. Soviet losses are low, and the Shock Army is performing well (its currently squashing 6 Rumanian divisions, including their armour), but the Red Army's easy victories in the Autumn War seem a long way away.

The Odessa MD estimates that once this line of defense is breached, organised combat in Rumania will be over, already the cavalry and motorised divisions of 4 Mech are able to slip into gaps opening up in the Rumanian lines - but 'Bela-Kun' will be late.

Stalin is not sure if it is such a good idea to broaden the overall front with the Germans but Hungary is likely to tip into the Axis in any case and the Soviet 'fraternal intervention' in Rumania is not helping keep them neutral.

Any sign yet that the Germans are transferring troops from the west or making any attempts to suport the Romanians? You'd think they'd be anxious about the Ploesti (sp?) oilfields falling under your control!

Palymrene - there is a huge build up at Memel - looks like 3 Pzr divs, there are at least another 5 Pzr divs in the rest of Poland, and about 15 luftwaffe squadrons (spies and radar are a wonderful combination!). They are reducing the Canadian empire in Norway to rubble, and have more or less finished off the UK - pushing into Scotland (boo - bet they dinnae risk it in the Gorbals!) and the South West.

Also in the Far East, Japan seems to have collapsed again, Nationalist Chinese troops have just taken Seoul.

So - its gonna blow up soon, Rumania is now a race and a few rear guard scraps so will be over in a couple of days.

... thanks you saved me inventing a 'politburo' report :)

Stalin has just (24 May) ordered Bela Kun and a reduced SIBTS (with just Finland as the goal) so as to grab space to then retreat out of when the inevitable happens! Both attacks to go in for 26 May - bangs goes my international reputation.

An open letter from V Molotov to the Washington Post

You have published articles criticising recent events in the Balkans and Finland as 'Soviet Agression'. We expect such lies from the capitalist press but also have a duty to tell the truth.

Comrade Stalin warned the British and French in November 1938 to stop accepting Hitler's claims he was merely righting the errors of Versaillles. At that stage we made it clear we had only one conclusion - we had to defend ourselves.

Our recent actions have led to unwanted casualties due to the militaristic cliques in the respective countries. We want to fight with our Hungarian, Rumanian and Finnish comrades not against them. Our occupation of their countries will be temporarily, the Soviet Union is not an imperialist power. At the moment, our troops are welcomed as liberators and bulwarks against German power. If needed we will extend our protection further in Europe and Asia ... and yes, to the Americas.

Molotov overdid that letter a little bit with that last little sentence.

He is, after all, not the brightest light in the Soviet Union ... but I'm still running my subversion experiment in Mexico, its a bit lost in all the rest but is working quite nicely - at this rate I'll have a friendly power just next to the USA by about 1945-6 ... unless the Germans just gobble me up - they seem to be enjoying themselves sailing around the world - I'm really glad I fortified all my ports.

Try and build a lot of submarines, it will hamper the little bits of surface vessels Germany has. Then you can hit their remaining subs with destroyers and aircraft, and Germany's waters will be yours :D

Politburo 2 June 1941

They all look a little stunned ... from being a primarily defensive power 6 weeks ago the USSR is now involved in 3 attacks on its near neighbours.

Molotov and Kusnetsov note that Orlov is no longer present, but don't really want to ask Stalin.

JS - right, just to confirm, we're all agreed that Orlov was to blame for us missing the invasion of the UK?
rest stay v quiet.
JS - Panfilov can take over and tell us the latest bad news.
P - well the luftwaffe aren't bombing Karachi as we originally suspected ... they are based there now. Seems the Germans have invaded India.

JS - we're also blaming Orlov for the 15% subversion rate of our research effort as well, at least he (points at Panfilov) adds 5% back in (he's a 'man of the people').

JS - have the Rumanians surrendered yet?
Shaposhnikov - no but we'll launch a final attack on Bucharest tomorrow.
JS - well who is to blame for that - we allocated 10 days for that offensive and it took you that long to break their border defences.

JS - turns to Kalinin - have you made any progress in getting us any better press?

Panfilov looks worried

P - there is more bad news ... the Germans have almost completely overrun the UK, so they really are going to out of targets very soon - except us, and we might just have annoyed them with our recent actions. Oh and the Canadians are reduced to hanging on at Narvik.

JS - looks calm, thats ok, we can always find someone else to blame.

at which stage, my decision many posts ago not to do any research or building of the Soviet navy comes back to haunt me!

Huh, if Britain is defeated then it'll be basically the battle of the two titans. What a war that'll be!

A successful Sea Lion does not bode well for you at all. Even though it seems like Romania will fall before or around the same time as England does I don't know if you'll have time to get Hungary before the Wehrmacht redeploys. It might not even be worth the risk of having your troops getting caught out of position since an advance beyond the Carpathians will only extend your front.

No .... I'm trying to work out if I've done the best or worst thing possible. I'm reasonably content with the Rumanian attack -they were no where near joining the axis but for the first time were heading that way - and the improvement to my defense lines by basically grabbing the Carpathians was more than worth it.

I've decided that I'm not going to defend anything in Hungary beyond the Balaton sector. Their army was better than I expected but its small and I've got it pinned down. So I'm sending the cav and motorised divs of 4 Mech on a grab of VPs. If I get them before Adolph stirs, I'll puppet Hungary and they can look after themselves in the West. Rumania and Finland are to stay in the USSR for now - I'm aiming to maximise leadership extraction so I can really boost officers for the black days that I think are to come. If I get pushed back I can then keep research as high as poss and still keep a decent leadership ratio off that stockpile.

As a measure of my worry, I've just re-organised the Central Asian Front so that the 2 Mtn Divs I left there at the start will be joined by 2 more new built Mtn Divs and placed in a more offensive orientated army, for operations in British India if the Germans complete that conquest. I'm also really glad I have that mass of Garrison divs spread about Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Sinkiang despite being close, probably wisely is making it plain it doesn't want to join the Comintern. Its probably for the best as that leaves me a 2 province front with India - that I'll try and fortify - this is where all my recent construction is paying off ... new infrastructure is really cheap and relatively fast.

Huh, if Britain is defeated then it'll be basically the battle of the two titans. What a war that'll be

With the additional view that given Germans in India, and their new taste for naval invasions, it won't just be in European Russia.

Isvestia 30 June 1941

The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union has today announced the end of combat operations in the Balkans and Finland. Rumania surrendered on 9 June when troops of 3rd Shock Army entered Bucharest, Finland followed on 20 June when elements of 1 Mech Army captured Turku and Hungary surrendered on 27 June when the Cav-Mech formations of 3 Mech Army entered Budapest.

We have thus avenged historic defeats of the proletariat in the period 1919-21. Due to the weakness of the domestic Communist Parties, direct Soviet control will be maintained in both Rumania and Finland, although both will move to federated status within the USSR as soon as possible. Hungary has regained its true independence and remains a sovereign state, now allied to the USSR. The remaining Hungarian troops will join Soviet forces in defending their home country against imperialist aggression.

In other news - it has been reported that Japanese troops have recaptured large areas of Manchuria despite having been almost totally defeated in Korea. German troops push into the North of Scotland and a worrying build up of German forces continues on our western borders.

Perhaps it is time to start wooing the Americans for support....
The Axis is becoming very large and powerful, you may not be able to handle the Germanic hordes on your own.
