UPDATE XXXVII: April 1916 - PART I
YET THE WAR ISN'T OVER
Spring 1916 comes with a new economical plan: since we are not to keep the hard-fought vast eastern territories, we shall at least benefit from its population. By promoting craftsmen in jobless aeras, we encourage western migration, and thus a broader population move from eastern slavs to core germany. Of course, they won't assimilate - but hey: Bayern is way to german for my taste in this game.
On April 5th, von Deimling arrives in Lille, following our plan to cut-off the attackers of Brugge.
We check the ongoing battles, and discover that both are going very well: while von Mudra is doing his job holding off the enemy in Brugge, von Einem starts to reduce the numbers in Cambrai.
On the Italian front, our second army corps arrives in Udine, in preparation of the upcoming northern italian campaign. Only von Hutier's XII Korps is missing, and he's well on his way.
By April 9th, both battles in northern France are won. We loose no time advancing as far as possible.
With the ally fleet heavily bombarding his positions, casulties are climbing among von Mudra's corps.
Unfortunately, our advance towards Arras is again delayed by a french suicide-attack. This isn't very rewarding in the long term, as he looses way too much divisions, but right now, this dumb AI strategy has the advantage of seriously slowing us down.
On a side-note: Portugal finally joined the allies, which doesn't mean much more trouble for us, besides in south-west Africa.
By mid-April, good news arrive from south-africa:the battle of Johannesburg is over, and with it perished nearly all remaining divisions from the SA Army.
On April 17th, another french division vanishes in Cambrai, and Ludendorff resumes his offensive towards Arras. Tough the situation considerably worsened during the last few days, as it seems the the French finally decided to commit a sizeable force to the defense of Picardie.
To make things worse, the British managed to land 2 division in Dunkerque just as we finally occupied Lille. Defended by shore-Bombardment and lvl 5 fort, those Brits won't make it easy to encircle Brugge. The nice thing is that the Entente keeps moving its fleet, reducing the shore-bombardment bonus in Brugge a lot; thus, from time to time, von Mudra is able to completely destroy enemy divisions.
In South Africa, as Johannesburg is occupied, we resume our offensive, with little resistance expected from the remains of the SA Army. We hope to trigger another advantagious peace deal very soon there.
Checking our provinces from time to time, we notice that our "force-immigration" plan seems to work, as eastern pops fill up empty factory slots.
On April 20th, von Mudra reports the destruction of yet another enemy division; it looks like we won't need any encirclement after all.
On day later, as expected, von Einem meets another french assault on Cambrai. 38k is much better than previously registered 1-division-suicide-attacks, but still nothing to worry about.
The usual rebellions in Poland...
On April 22th von Deimling finally arrives in Dunkerque, and immediatly asaults enemy defenses. According to his report, the British under-manned divisions points to manpower shortage also among the British Army.
The day later, the battle of Brugge is won: only 4 barely-manned divisions managed to retreat ... towards Dunkerque. Hopefully von Deimling will be able to finish them off there.
Cambrai is slowly turning into another bloodbath, as the french keep pooring new divisions at the same pace we destroy them. Butchering around becomes disgusting. Where is the strategy, guys ? We are tempted by ending this war ASAP, but, ofc, surrender is not an option...
April 27th: In Dunkerque, von Deimling reports the arrival of survivors from Brugge. One division is nearly immediately destroyed.
South Africa is slowly occupied by our forces. The terrain type clearly deosn't speed up things...
On April 30th, von Hutier finally arrives in Udine, triggering the beginning of our Italian Campaign. All forces are order to attack Venice, avoiding the mountaneous terrain in Treviso. We count on our Austrian ally to secure Udine, and prevent any cut-offs...
Towards the end of the month, our much needed cavalry gets ready. We reinforce existing cavalry corps to 6 divs each, in order to deal more efficiently with uprisings.
And thus ends our update. Monthly overview to follow...
