Great AAR:)
Could you add more in-game pictures:)

Pls update frequently, its a good AAR:)

Fair asking :D I plan to do some update during the week end... Tonight or tomorow I don't know right now. I have to say I am really busy with the US Civil WAR mod. But don't worry I intend to finish this AAR.

On in game pictures, actually as I said in the first post, I didn't have a plan to do an AAR with this game. So you will begin to see some in 1866, not before. Sorry about that.

Nikolai : Thanks for this nice comment

Jolt : In Europe, countries belongs to their people. That's why, as the French Emperor, I couldn't have let European states leading their countries as they don't work for their people :D :D

A wonderful AAR, indeed.

France in the middle of the European liberal Revolutions

This post is the 6th part of I) The last French King

It's been several days since the young one some already call Napoleon VII saw his grand-father. That's a good thing to keep his concentration on history. But right now, he's dying to now more about King Louis-Philippe.

"So papy, you told me about the Maghreb. You know, I got it know. Louis-Philippe was not that bad ! So I want to know more about him !"

The old Emperor smiled. At least, this story taugh to the young one some basis on politics.

"Well boy, you know, one of the reason we French do not like Louis-Philippe today is because the end of his rule was pretty boring, and historians still don't understand why he did so little during the last years of his rule.

But if you accept it, I will tell you about my opinion. I think he did because he understood what was going on in Europe. In the early 1840th, in Europe began the "liberal revolutions".

All across Europe, people began to revolt against their kings. The effects of your ancestor Napoleon the first began to be felt across the continent. People who knew liberty and justice for a few years taught their children. And those began to have some really bad opinions about their kings.

All across german States, revolutions called for the end of the system, more freedom and an united Germany.

In Austria for example, people wanted to have their own states. As you know, Austria was made mostly of German people dominating the other 8% of the people living in the Austrian Empire.

In the German States, thousands of revolutionaries called for the end of the system, more freedom and an united Germany. This ended at the time by a bloody repression. Only Prussia was happy about it, as they worked on those movements to create a national idea : to unite all the German people under the Prussian rule, lone defender of the German populations.

So, with his weak economy, weak position, Louis-Philippe had to deal with this situation."

"Papy, there is one thing I do not understand. I barely heard about the 1840 - 1848 revolutions in Europe in school. WHy do you put this as so much important ? It did not touched France !"

Napoleon V smiled.

"Yeah my boy, those revolutions did touched France. In a incredible way. And this is probably where Louis-Philippe happened to be a great king.

During those eight years, Louis-Philippe did only one thing : he tried to have the financial means to reform the French political system. And even when noone at that time thought he could find the money to do it, he did it.

To be fair, he did other things during that time. But his main goal succeeded. France had no revolt during those eight years that made the Europe full of civil wars. And in 1848, France was at last again a constitution monarchy, with vote rights for every French citizen.

Because of this, liberals in France kept a low profile. They won without a fight ! Or they thought they won. Louis-Philippe gave them almost everything they wanted, and the Empire kept later on.

Free meetings, free press, the right to vote ! Louis-Philippe understood something not much people understood before 1851. The French people was tired with monarchy. And in the same time, the French people wanted back the old glory we had years ago !

You know, my grand-father, Louis-Napoleon III, knew Louis-Philippe. And my grand-father told me that : they were not good friends, but the last king told Louis-Napoleon several times that he knew he had to leave the power sooner or later. And later would have mean the same fate Louis the XVIth had.

So Louis-Philippe put in place all the political means to see a new Republic, the third one, to rule France.

In the early days of 1848, France was a clear democracy, like the United Kingdom, with Louis-Philippe who swore to let the country without a king after that year's election.

The thing he didn't get was that the French people wanted an Emperor instead of a King. "

Revolutions across the Germanies, should we be surprised!? :p

Perhaps the French will take advantage of this is, especially the revolutions rocking the Habsburg Empire at the current moment.

Hmm interesting.

The Congressional election of 1848

February 1848

This post is the 1st part of II) Political turmoils of 1848

So kid, now I shall tell you about this very particular and complicated year of 1848.

In July 1847, King Louis-Philippe set a Universal suffrage, like in the United States, to elect the Parliament. He was aware that he could not directly promote a new Republic. There were too many forces who wanted a king. And he was the legitimate one.

Louis-Philippe found a trick.

He announced taht he would step down as King of France

This announcement had been desatrous for Republicans, who hoped to win the parliament in the coming elections of early 1848. You see, they wanted to win on a clear program on which they knew they could win some non-liberal Monarchists. With this promisse from the King, they knew they would lose automatically all those Conservative votes. And then, victory in the parliamentary elections would be lost entirely. It is porbable this would have happen. This was a huge mistake from the king, who didn't get that before his announcement.

Republicans had to do something. How to beat the Orleanists with the assurance for them to have every "monarchists" votes ? Impossible.

One thing came in mind of the Republicans. One important part of the Monarchist vote would come from the Bonapartists, people who wanted a return to the Empire. They desagreed totally on what France should be : A Republic or an Empire. But they agreed on the most important issue of this current election : more state intervention in the economy. And Bonapartists knew their only chance to gain some power in this election was with this alliance.

Republicans were a lot more organized than Bonapartists. So Republicans had a lot more candidates to present. A deal was made between the leaders of the two parties : Republicans candidates would be the heart of the coalition, with 68% of their candidates. And Bonapartists would have the choice of the candidate that will lead the coalition and who would be designated head of the Parliament.

So the Bonapartists choose someone out of the French political arena, and even outside of France since Louis-Philippe wanted him in a trial before a French court since his attempt to take the power : Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon Ist's nefew.

With the common strength and popularity of Republicans and Bonapartists, the Party of Republicans began its electoral campaign against hopeless Orleanists. For the first time, with this first election, Monarchists were divided between the party of Republicans and the Orleanists, for the very election that hold the possibility of the end of Monarchy in France !

The coalition now led three movements :

- Bonapartists : Interventionism ; Protectionism ; Moralism ; Lim. Citizenship ; Pro Military ; pro-Empire system
- Conservative Republicans : Interventionism ; Protectionism ; Moralism ; Full Citizenship ; Anti-Military; pro-Republic system
- Liberal Republicans : Laissez-faire; Protectionism; Secularized ; Full Citizenship ; Anti-Military; pro-Republic system

They created a mix of all thoses position to create this plate-form :
Interventionism; Protectionism; Secularized ; Full Citizenship ; Anti-Military ; no position on the system

Arrived February 1848, and the first free Congress election for years in France. Orleanists shout "Treason !" for the entire campaign against Bonapartists. And the electoral day arrived. French citizen went to the polls.

The Republican coalition crushed Orleanists.

As he promised, King Louis-Philippe organized his departure. His last action was to organize Presidential elections for November 1848, and he asked the newly elected Congress to nominate a temporary President, non-eligible in november.

Then, Louis-Philippe officialy ended Monarchy, under manifestations of hate and accusations of treason from those who always supported him : the Orleanists.

That's interesting to note that the Republicans crushed the Orleanists and Louis-Phillippe is no longer King of France, but I suspect he'll make his own glorious return one day, or perhaps someone else will take back the throne.

Great stuff! ;)

I can see Louis Phillip's face when he saw the results:

D'oh!:D
