I just prefer to leave them neutral. The allies never seem to go after neutrals, and thus they can really cover your open flanks. You can also invade them later for giggles after you've dealt with the allies.

I've seen them do it on more than one occasion in my games. Now, normally the Italians win, but they COULD lose. TBH, I've seen the Italians take the entire Balkan peninsula on their own hook without being allied to Germany (in most cases me ).
