I saw on the game's site that there's some way to convert your savegames into HOI2 DD files... How does that work? I just recently got the game, but haven't seen any option/utility for it.

If you have the Revolutions expansion there is an in-game tool for converting to HoI2 DD. There may exist some user made program for externally converting saves from regular Victoria, I'm not sure.

How well does that function work?

I have Rev and AOD but I do not own HOI2.

I guess if it works well, it might be worthwhile to go ahead and get hold of HOI2.

I've not done it myself, but i hear quite poorly. If there are unclaimed parts of the map it doesn't deal so well. It doesn't convert satalites to puppets and you'll often find yourself with inbalanced resources (such as no energy etc.) There are other conversion programs (thinks theres one on the vicky wiki). People usually only recomend it for multiplayer because of the lack of events (which is pretty instrumental in HOI2) there is a way of adding events back in but i can imagine alot of them won't meet the preconditions, for example some require poland to exist, soem require hitler to be head of state etc.

Theres no harm in trying it i guess

I don't know of any converter for AoD

My plan to try is to make the converted output save from Victoria, and paste my country's section into a new HOI2 game saved on the first day. Then it's a matter of getting rid of any countries I annexed in Vicky, and making sure any of my provinces aren't listed as owned/controlled by other countries. Will if work? Hell if I know. But it's worth a shot.

Problem is, I haven't yet finished a Vicky game all the way through. My 1916 Chile that owned all South Andean POPs and satellited all of South America got corrupted, my Siam that was nearly civilized by about 1910 just got boring, as did the super powerful Japan (where at one point I had 999 hulls in storage when there wasn't a single other producer in the world - Yeah, my navy was crazy strong).

This brings up the other issue with conversion - by the time you've been at the reigns (pun intended, not intended, you be the judge!) of your country for 100 years, there's often little more to accomplish. Instead you'll have to limit yourself.

The converter in Revolutions was built with the 1914 scenario in mind. It works poorly with the GC.

The ingame one is broken.

It will covert the victoria save, but it will not allow any of the events of HoIDD to work, no secret weapons, no abombs and no random events.

And if you liberate countries they will have no tech teams so they never do any research.

Fortunetly there is a better fan made converter, that isn't perfect (it doesn't convert any attached brigades besides tanks) but all the HoI evetns work, and it cuts the size of all victoria military in half (so if England had 150 dreadnaughts, it will only covert 75 of them, and they will be the old almost useless lv1 BB of HoI2).

If you want it, download it from here;

But I can tell you its great fun to go from 1836 to 1964 with the same nation, in my latest conversion game, France is the leader of the allies and the most powerful nation on earth, in 1946, and has managed to defeat germany and japan with its alliance partners. France is allied to the USA, Finland (which was created in vicky by me), Bulgaria (same as Finland), Albania, (again, the same) and the Phillipiness, also created when i was playing Vicky to be French puppets.

The Conversion, gave me 15 carries and 30 BBs, as well as 10 Armored divisions and about 80 infantry divisions.

The key though, is in vicky you MUST develop heavy industry (steel, autos, eletrical parts, machine parts, airplanes, cars and telephones) as these are the factories that convert into HoI2 'IC' production points. other goods convert at a lesser rate.
