Like the title says, I am having trouble moving to Calansho Sand Sea (a province in north africa) - I can't move to it from any adjacent province and it seems to be effectively landlocked from the rest of the continent. However, units can retreat to it and get "stuck".

I basically had France occupying it for an entire game because I couldn't move to it.

IIRC this is a desert with zero infrastructure, in which case - yeah, it takes forever to move there. Units shouldn't retreat there unless desperate, though. And "ownership" of it should be pretty much irrelevant...

Well, I understand that, but I am literally unable to move to it. It gives me a move error and an unhappy noise.

Which is as it should be, the bug is that units can choose to retreat there.
IIRC you can gain control of the province if you control a few provinces around it.
If you really want to get the french out you can waste some paratroopers to do so.

Yep - just checked the map, and all routes to Calansho Sand Sea and the Great Sand Sea are non-viable, so no unit should be able to get there. Any unit retreating there is a bug (please say if you know for certain that this has happened). The same is not true of other provinces around it, incidentally, but be aware that some may be entered only from specific direction(s).

As Kalelovil says, occupying a few provinces adjacent to it should 'turn' it after a while, so the fact that it has become "owned" by another nation does not necessarily mean that they have sent troops there.

It's not really that "extra special" - it's just that there are some places you just can't take an army. There are actually several province borders that units cannot cross - but with the Calansho and Great Sand Seas it happens to be all of them...
