Chapter 7
Vendetta

With the Poles subdued and a pact signed with the USSR, the eastern front is secure for the time being. Now is the time for avenging the war of 1914-18, and the humiliating treaty imposed upon Germany by the cowardly French and English.

Though the Kriegsmarine is small, most of its front-line strength is extremely modern and powerful.

germannavymay1.png

The high command can count on Rear Admiral von Grebe and his new command. KMS Graf Zeppelin has joined the fray at a critical phase in the war.

Germany's air superiority fighters are being upgraded to the new model 109G.

newfighters.png

The Luftwaffe is now a supremely powerful fighting force.

germanairforcemay1.png

Now that almost all land formations, particularly the armor and the light infantry, have been upgraded, the German Heer is without a doubt the most fearsome armed force in the world. Combining state of the art weapons and tactics with some of the most brilliant military minds on earth has provided a unique tool with which to carve out an even larger Reich.

germanarmymay1.png

Despite the seriousness of the conflicts so far, German casualties have remained relatively light, largely due to the implementation of massive firepower, and armored vehicles.

lossesmay1.png

The fighter and interceptor squadrons remained the most sorely pressed element of the armed forces, having been fiercely engaged since the outbreak of hostilities.

airlossesmay1.png

Even with a technological advantage, German scientists and industrialists are not content. Further advances continue in all technical areas.

techmay1.png

The progress of development since the change in government in January 1936 is quite satisfactory.

techoverviewmay1.png

The production situation is sobering, but upon further inspection, much of the defecit in repairing provinces is due to large tracts of wasteland in Scandinavia. Germany proper is largely intact, mainly due to the efforts of the Luftwaffe. Note also that the production of armored vehicles has resumed at full speed (previously halted in order to focus on single engine fighters).

productionslidersmay1.png

The Western Allies will not be push-overs. Though England has many commitments, we can anticipate that much of her armed might will be deployed on the western front.

inteluk.png

Her troops and her citizens will fight on, largely due to the accession of the grotesque warlord, Winston Churchill.

churchillbecomespmapril.png

France has an impressive army on paper, especially when the low countries figure into the equation. Hopefully a combination of bold tactics and superior training will carry the day.

Submarine flotillas under the command of Rear Admirals Haulsee, Fricke, and Doenitz put to sea in a resumption of the suspended commercial interdiction campaign.

submarinedeparturemay1.png

The Luftwaffe is doing its part to pave the way for a successful advance towards the west. Enemy incursions are furiously attacked in order to minimize Allied knowledge of German buildups.

The Luftwaffe is quite impressive, in terms of quantity and quality, and the Heer just rocks!

Nice updates, even if the luftwaffe got more attention than my tanks. Was nice to see Von Dutchie being useful.

As for the attack on France, you should be able to blitz through the low countries fairly easily. The historical plan usually leads to succes here too.

Chapter 6
Vendetta

Plans for the assault in the west are finalized. 60 percent of the Heer will be involved directly, supported by most of the Luftwaffe. The nascent Kriegsmarine will strike opportunistically when and where it can.

Declarations of war upon the low countries, containing as they do many Aryans of Wallonian, Saxon, and Frisian descent, are unfortunately necessary.

waronbenelux.png

The overall plan calls for 9 armies, along with supporting paratroops, siege artillery, and rear echelon forces, to advance through Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the northeastern border of France, thus bypassing Andre Maginot's toy castles.

The Fallschirmkorps, consisting of von Sternreiter's 1. Fallschirmjaeger Division, and Mico's 7. Flieger Division, are ready with their transports in Essen. They will be parachuted across the Meuse at Reims to ease the task of the armored thrust there. Meanwhile, 6 of the heaviest artillery systems on earth stand ready to shatter the Great War fortresses around Liege and Namur.

The offensive elements of the Luftwaffe will remain in close communications with the ground forces, ready to provide instant support at critical locations. I just love how you organize your corps, and armies, nice historical feeling... but it must a lot of micro management!

Karaiskandar, Middelkerke: I don't have all of my divisions laid out in this way...just the ones that I use most often. For instance, 248th Militia Division, defending the coast of Narvik, doesn't belong to any particular corps/army. Besides flavour, I also form armies so that I can control-group them. Helps a lot in fluid battles to maintain command limit.

Sternreiter shall not dissappoint the fuhrer.

Glad to see him used for what I intended him for. Ideally I'd have him dropped to Paris, holding out bitterly until Guderian reaches him with panzers, but that'd be too cliche, would it not. :D

So I just decided to look up the 7th Panzer Division on Wikipedia, the one my very own Mj. General Kemper is commanding, and it turns out that, in real life, Erwin Rommel commanded the 7th Panzer in the Battle of France. I am very pleased. :D

Chapter 6
Vendetta (cont)

Zero hour for the invasion of Benelux is 6 AM on May 22. Not long after the final authorization to advance is given, German forces begin to encounter enemy troops. Resistance, however, is spotty and not sufficient to impede the advance.

frontierclashes.png

General Nehring, leading 4 Panzer Armee and elements of 1 Armee, quickly proves his worth as German forces Hulk Smash their way through Bastogne. Nehring feels just as comfortable in the heavily wooded areas as he does in his own home. Mj. Gen. von Lenski's 5th SS Panzer is in the van and fighting hard to move forward.

bastognemay220700nehrin.png

By morning of May 23, n Nehring's left, von Middelkerke has already swept aside the Luxembourgers and has made contact with the French in Metz. Unfortunately for 2 Panzer Armee, the defenders are equipped with some anti-tank guns. Victory will not be easy.

metzmay230700vonmiddlek.png

While von Middelkerke is receiving his nasty surprise, to the north the Germans have swept aside all resistance and are advancing into the heart of Belgium and the Netherlands.

may230900frontierbattle.png

Meanwhile, by midnight of that day, Nehring and 4 Panzer Armee have swept through Bastogne and have begun to throw pontoon bridges across the Meuse between Sedan and St. Mihiel.

reimsmay240000.png

Paratroopers are ordered to be ready for an aerial drop at dawn of the 24th. 7th Flieger Division will drop directly over the bridgehead, while 1st Fallschirmjaeger Division will land further south at Chaumont to impede French movements.

parachutedropsorderedma.png

Even further north, a gap is beginning to open between the mailed fist and the following infantry divisions. It matter little however; despite the fact that the French have assumed unified command, the defenders are reeling.

northernsectormay240000.png

Only in the fortified province of Metz is there a cohesive defense. Lt. Gen. von Middelkerke keeps the pressure on, but progress is slow.

metzmay240000.png

Due to the speed with which German forces have reached the Meuse, a crossing has been achieved with only light losses.

victoryinreimsmay240700.png

On General Nehring's right, or northern flank, General von Mackensen and 3 Panzer Armee break through Namur, isolating the fortress city of Liege. Orders are given for Mackensen to keep to the right of the Aisne/Oise/Seine river system, and to break for the channel.

3padrivetowrardsthechan.png

General Nehring has thrown several pontoon bridges across the Meuse at Sedan, Dinant, and Montherme, but none of them are able to bear the weight of heavy vehicles, which require barge ferries to cross. Combined with the stalemate at Metz, Mj Gen Mico in Chaumont has thus been deprived of armored support. Facing stiff counterattacks, and outnumbered 12 to 1, he nevertheless dismisses any idea of a retreat, and begins making defensive arrangements.

chaumontmay241300.png

By midnight of that day, the odds against have increased to 18 to 1. 7th Flieger has already earned a reputation for grittiness; the French now attempt to push them beyond their limit. Fortunately, Mico is an experienced campaigner and not given to panic attacks.

chaumontmay250000.png

In the skies above, things are relatively quiet, a testament to the hard work put in by the Luftwaffe since the opening of the war. Allied squadrons are weak and disorganized thanks to the sacrifice of German pilots. A combined Belgian-Dutch raid, flying grossly out-of-date aircraft is intercepted and manhandled by Lt. Gen. Milch on the 25th.

interceptionarlonmay251.png

SS troops under Mj Gen Fernando Torres are the first to get across the delta of the Rhine/Maas river system, but they run into stiff opposition around Ghent on the afternoon of the 25th.

ghentmay251600.png

By morning of May 26th, completed the crossing of the Meuse, most of 4 Panzer Armee is ordered to advance past the headwaters of the Aisne and Seine rivers to outflank Troyes. The powerful VXII Panzerkorps swings to the south, and hurries to Mj. Gen. Mico's aid.

movementsfromreimsmay25.png

7th Flieger is still maintaining their position, but casualties are beginning to mount...

chaumontmay260500.png

Mico and his Paratroopers will surely be remembered for their heroic deeds!
