UPDATE LVI: January 1917 - PART I
A NEW ALLY
For the last 6 months, von Hutier's VI Korps has been busy helping out our Austrian ally in northern Italy. Needless to say that without its aid, the front would have broken a long time ago; thus current orders remain unchanged: stop the italians whenever possible. An the latest hotspot would be Modena.
Far more south, exciting news reach our Central Command: with Queenstown and East London finally under control, we now occupy the entire Cape province.
Why was it so important to take over those 2 backward provinces ? Because it allows us to propose an advantageous peace deal to South Africa; having been utterly crashed and beeing home to a sizeable anti-british boer population, we want the whole Cape province (Plan 2) and war indemnities and political control. It's harsh, but hey, someone has to pay for the party.
Of course, under the current level of pressure (german troops everywhere), the SA government happily agrees.
Jey ! We not only secure another long-lasting front, but also managed to secure a potential immigration-powerhouse state, on top of gaining one more ally - even though it's current combat ability is nearly zero. Having fulfilled our main objective in the area, we decide to settle for a defensive war, by pushing back the portugese backstabbers and establishing a solid frontline.
In France, things are not so brillant though: in order to avoid unecessary casualties, we order Ludendorff to call off the attack in Besançon and wait for a better time to reduce the pocket. The battle of Melun is still raging, claiming more and more enemy divisions, while the fight over Paris is nearly over.
And on February 4th 1917, the occupation of the french capital begins. We redeploy our troops in the area to cut off Amiens.
One day later, von Hutier arrives in Modena. Though we stay confident in his abilities, we always monitor his battles very closely in order to avoid such things as enemy reinforcements, austrian withdrawal or unappropriate terrain decimate his soldiers. Join operations are always tricky.
Russia is a mess: it seems that not everyone agreed with the Bolchevik revolution, triggering a civil war. Siberia and the far eastern somehow decided to seceed, while White Russia (in the Caucasus) becomes home to all those who want to crush the revolution.
Throughout January, the situation becomes more and more desperate for the French; after the massacre in Melun, the entire central is collapsing, opposing only minor resistance in Orleans and Chartres. In fact, the only remaining combat-able frenchmen are trapped in the pocket of Besançon, surrounded by 47 German divisions. Ludendorff is well aware of his advantage, and watches closely the latest enemy redeployments before dealing the lethal blow; his only concern at this moment is keeping his own losses at a minimum..
It seems that the British also realize how urgent the siutation has become in France, and decide to launch another landing in Brugge. Unfortunately for them, von Lettow had plenty of time to digg in, and is more than ready to repell any attack.
On January 12th, time has come to finish off the French; we launch what we hope to be one of the last grand offensives to destroy the pocket of Besançon.
And the day later, Paris is occupied. Never since the beginning of this war have we been so close to victory. In less than 3 years, against all odds, we managed to take over 2 amongs the greates european capitals. Only London would be left to make our victory complete, but we secretly hope to force GB to peace talks without having to invade the Island.
As usual now, first things we do is getting a german flag where everyone can see it and opening an emigration bureau - though the French don't seem to be interested in joining the winning side.
Our offensive in Besançon is progressing nicely. With sufficient troops, fortifications are no more a problem.
On January 18th, the population of Paris decides to take matters into it's own hands and rebells with the strength of almost 10 divisions. Of course, we are going to crush them. It's only sad such things happen, since countless lives will be wasted, for zero gain. (
Darn scripted events !)
On January 21th, the last Amry corps arrives in Besançon, although the battle is nearly over.
In central France, the defense of Orlans is nearly entirely destroyed (only 1 div retreating), leaving our troops in front of a wide undefended open land for the first time since this war broke out. It can be quite a shock, when you are used to have someone with a gun in front of you, to find nobody. One keeps asking himself "Where are they ? What happened ?" Well guys, you won - they lost: that's what happened !
Towards the end of January, the resitance around Paris is defeated, leaving only Amiens with its level 5 fort and ****** shore-bombardment
And thus ends our update. Monthly overview to follow...
