The Auto Convoys feature is disabled by default in 1.04, which shouldn't really be.

Besides, it is a problem for battlescenarios where you can't access to certain screens such as Production, Trade etc. as you can't modify the auto convoys option, meaning you're stuck with no convoy transportation.

In a multiplayer game, I was playing as the Allies in the 1945 Japan scenario. I was aghast as I saw my divisions slowly starving to death for no apparent reason...

Well, I never play Battlescenarios (or very rarely), so I would not miss auto-convoys. Still, this is certainly a problem, however; in another thread, someone has suggested that saving the config.eu file with all the game adjustments to one's liking (messages, speed, auto-promote leaders, auto-trading, auto-convoys, etc.) might do the trick with a new 1.04 install (and all other future patches as well). So you might want to try this out and see if it works... ;)

All well and good if the player knows how to do that. Maybe it's explained in that other thread - if I could find it.

Short of that, new players like me need:

a. for this to be fxed so we don't have to modify the files.

or

b. a very detailed step by step set of instructions on EXACTLY what to do where. Pictures are worth thousands of words.

Seriously, as a player new to AoD the Battlescenarios are extended tutorials, and what I would use to show/teach the game to prospective players. As it is many of the Battlescenarios are unplayable due to this bug. Finding out you can't invade France or Japan due to supply problems which the player has zero control over really puts me off AoD.

Edt: There is a thred in the tech support forum:

Please start a 1936 campaign and see if autoconvoys are enabled there. If not enable all three options and save the game.
Now start a battle scenario, maybe convoys are active now. If this is working you may want to reload an older battlescenario savegame - may be working there as well.

The convoys do work once you activate the auto convoys option, I didn't say they don't work. The problem is such an option is disabled by default, which is a rather bad decision. There are two issues with that:

1) If it's not activated (and such is the default case), there's no way you can activate it while playing a battle-scenario such as Operation Downfall. You'd have to quit the game (sucks if it's a multiplayer game).

2)
All well and good if the player knows how to do that.

I bet 9 out of 10 new players are unaware that such an option even exists. Thus, everyone would think it's a serious bug instead of some faulty setting. Manual convoys should be the exception, not the rule.

I'll give that a try, thanks. Have to keep that saved game when deleting excess saved game files, right?

Confirmed that this works when starting a new battlescenario, have not tried to restart a saved game.
