Could someone just confirm whether, under normal circumstances (i.e. not due to special event), 4 is the maximum number of allies a human player can have in his/her alliance? Is this the same for AI players? Thanks!
 
In the game I currently playing I had atleast 7, 8 counting myself (1.1 vanilla).
 
third angel is correct...........the current default setting is 5 as per defines file

_COUNTRY_ALLIANCE_MAX_ = 5 #Positive

this number only applies for human players as the AI can have more or less members, so 5 is a human plus 4 AI
The only time a human can have more is if its done via an event

you can make it a harder game by lowering this number
 
That's weird. Now, don't quote me on that but I seem to remember that the limitation only applies if the human player is the alliance leader so I guess you weren't.

An alliance can have more members if the extra members are brought in by event. There is no "real" limit on a number of allies, its just that the AI is coded to reject alliance offers that create alliances bigger than that which is set in the defines file.

Not even that. Alliance with more than five members is like RM with the Papal States before this patch: impossible. Even peterthethird crashes on the wall without bringing more alliance members, they refuse anyway.
Well, out of peace offers peterthethird works not-so-greatly...diploannexations do not work, for example.

Sorry but in Vanilla peterthethird works wonders. Have had at least as many as 7 allies and have yet to fail at Diplo, may be all my attemps at allies were with vassels.
And before you judge, I am not playing for my ego, just play the game I am to kill time.;)

Thought are you sure all the requirements for Diplo are meet. Myself have problems Diploing Sweden but I think that is WAD.:D
 
The limit in defines.txt only apply to any human alliance leader when trying to invite new members to an alliance. If the total amount of alliance members is equal to or greater than the value in defines, then the proposal to add another member will be rejected.

Any other way of building an alliance (event, AI as leader, cheating) uses an "infinite" number of members (every nation could be in the same alliance, so it's limited by the number of provinces on the map, in practice).
 
Darn. And I was wondering, why Moldovia, being my vassal and at +200 relations so stubbornly declines my invitations to join alliance.

And if I join the alliance of other nations, then I can be in a group of more than 5 nations, right?
 
This always reminds me of the time I played as Scotland and everyone was happy to put the 30 year war behind them and unite. (except Venice, those assholes)

A nice difficult game for human is to make alliances a 3 in defines.
