According to the devs and one of the recent AARs, you can see both POPs and the actual population. One of them is already on the screen, the other is in the tooltip when you mouse over, if I remember correctly.

(there are countless tooltips, didn't check 'em all out just yet ;))

Interesting. So the population figure on the main screen represents adult males, who are approx. 1 out of every 4 people in a given country. Good to clear that up.

Who's protecting Dai Nam?

Who proofread the sea area names? :p

Also, does this mean you can now 'liberate' an area on behalf of a country that already exists (assuming that light green area is in fact Cambodia)

I'm having trouble deciding what I like more: The map-like zoomed out view, with the country names, or the super detailed geographic view, which shows off all the fancy new graphics in V2 :)

Speaking of clergy, they're the ones teaching other pops how to read. The ideal percentage of clergy per state for this is 4%, more than that give no extra bonus. You might even want to stop at 2% per state since, overall, you only get RP from 2% of your population being clergy. There's a lot of choices to be made just about this!
If you only get RP from 2% of your population being clergy why is 4% the ideal percentage of clergy per state?

Nice job smashing Korea. :)

Lots of Coal, Iron and Timber for your exploitation.

Great AAR so far. :) Enjoying the read but I'm curious how things are around the globe also.

I see Scandinavia formed which is very interesting, but I also see that Austria appears to have taken a large jump up the rankings and Prussia appears to have dropped down to 7th or so. Was there a war between the two that caused it? I'm really hopeful to see that Prussia has to take awhile to gather enough strength before they can simply defeat Austria and form Germany so I'm hoping Austria is strong enough and smart enough to slow them down for at least a few decades. :) It's looking like that's the case right now but can't really tell. :)

Maybe 4% per is the ideal number of teachers needed to raise the literacy (like maxing out the education slider in V1 to get the max literacy growth) of other POPs, like clerks who contribute to research (?).

Edit: I'm quite enjoying this AAR and the Samurai sprites!

Nice idea to choose the low infamy war.

You should really concentrate now on trying to get some Japanese to move to Korea. Afterall without colonists what kind of colonial overlords are you?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Cambodia is a puppet of the Vietnamese, which means that wargoal is to end the master-puppet relationship between the two.

You are not wrong. I can start a war with Dai Nam to release Cambodja which is their satelite and ally: the one protecting them. So, if I actually start a war to free Cambodja I will have to fight Cambodja

Chapter IX: Unhappy POPs

Let us take a look at the unhappy POPs of Japan. First of all there are of course those with a high militancy in Korea. Surprisingly there are only four groups which have thrown in their lot with the Korean Nationalists. Two of those can be ignored, the other two, the labourers not because of their size. The provinces of Taegu and Wonju are the only provinces with a high militancy-rating (9.6), those are the provinces I now garrison with the army from Seoul. Not a sizeable force but I hope it is enough to keep them in check.

The Koreans are the obvious unhappy peasants of my glorious land of the Rising sun. There is a small group in Edo which is very unhappy as well however: the artisans of Edo. Now these guys are important as long as I have no factories as they produce goods. And thus I have to do something about it. A mouse-over reveals they seriously lack in every-day and life-needs, wouldn't want to be them.

Checking out some other POPs whose needs aren't filled completely I see they lack the funds to buy those needs. This is thus what I have to do something about altough it is not clear to me at the moment what best to do. I can't lower taxes as I am not allowed to do so by my government settings. The only thing I can think of is lower the tariffs and in so doing aid them buying imported goods. At the moment I have more money coming in then is good for me so this is not a problem at all. Let's see what 25% subsidy (the maximum) does for them.

At the same time I am thinking of another solution to this problem: lowering the taxes on the middle-class. Which has the added advantage of more people being promoted into this class. My settings don't allow this at the moment however but perhaps I can alter this. If only I can find out how?

Checking the Politics screen I see the minimum of 50% taxes is because of the Planned Economy of the Shogunate. Changing the government to Court Faction won't change a thing. Only changing my government to Liberal would make it possible. If I do so however, I can not impose more then 50% taxes on the population if I want. And I don't think Japan is ready for that yet. Thus the artisans in Edo and the middle- and upper-class will have to wait for a little while longer.
