Yes, playable Muslim countries would require some form of polygamy and harem mechanics. (Production of heirs was not usually an issue...) This is one reason (the other being the religious gameplay) that Muslim countries will not initially be playable in CK2. It will take an expansion to do the Muslim world justice.

Wait a minute.... did you just spill out that:

1. Christian only nations at release of CKII
2. If sales are good and there is enough interest you would be making an expansion to play muslims

or am I dreaming? ;)

As well as the point that divorce, though frowned upon, was acceptable and happened from time to time in the Islamic world. I can just imagine an event like

You've found wife #2 a lot more interesting than #1, and #1 starts to feel neglected. What do you do?

-Do as the Prophet commands (small gain of piety, small chance of falling in love with #1, significant chance of being stressed)

-Ignore #1 (small loss of piety, risk of falling-out event)

-Divorce #1 (small loss of piety, sever marriage)

I still cringe at the idea of a celibate Muslim character in CK1 getting a piety boost. At best, the guy would be regarded as a weirdo, and at worst, get dragged before a sharia court for a divorce.

Divorce was kind of common in christendom too
as long as no land or title had come into the family though her, then it was a simple matter of getting a bishop to sign off on it.
but as i doubt the game will be able to track different inheritance laws and where they came from for each specific title, divorce really shouldnt be in it.

and hey moslems being the expansion not in at the start is what i wanted, and even though they decided that months before this forum was even made and i said it, im still taking it as a victory.

Great, that means we get the pants beat out of us for awhile till the expansion.

:p

(It should also be noted, that Islam is not the only religion that allows polygamy... and that not everyone had more than one Wife just cause they could :p historically and in modern day, a lot of people remain monogamists, perhaps that could be a trait?).

could they just not have mistresses and have moslems not have consequences. its my understanding that a sultan with many wives still had one wife who had primary status, so the other wives can be worked the same was as mistresses.

This sounds like a very good idea, having a 'Mistress' position in a court or some such. I am not surte how common it was in Medieval times, though it was definatley the norm later on (offiicial mistresses etc).

It could add a very interesting facet to court politics.

Actually, he said that Moslems wouldn't be playable. Nothing was said either way about Jews, Pagans, and non-monarchies (republics, orders, etc.).

An expansion that allows muslim play would indeed be nice.

Pagans also marry several wives so they're out.

As for Jews. Were there any jewish nobles in the timeframe?

Republics and orders are christian though ;)

Well if they keep the Khazars in the game, then there will be Jewish rulers. Though I doubt we will be able to play them.

Though (and I am just speculating here) in the other games with the Clausewitz engine, you can add as many cultures, religions and type of governments as you like. So making a mod that makes playing other religions should be bore feasible then with CK1, where you needed to hack the exe.
