Hi there

We have talked about it and if there is interest to work on a wiki, we will provide you with a free mediawiki(or whatever you want) to play on.

There seems to be a lot of confusion and people who are unsure on how some stuff work under the hood ( propably because it happens under the hood ;))
Also many of the features we added in the patches seem to have been more or less lost in the sea of information known as the web ;)

So if you are interested in a wiki, and / or want to be one of those who make the project take off - here is the place to post
As soon as it is up - we propose to make a question thread, where you can ask away - and we will answer any questions you might have, to the best of our ability....

I haven't worked on actually making a wiki much, (that said I have made pages and edits on Wikipedia and other wikis)
but I do have experience in writing articles and I am a web developer, administrator, and webmaster of my own (professional) website (and thus am willing to help set a wiki up if needed - I'd just need to learn how to first XD)

So yeah, I'd be glad to help make the wiki (writing, admin, etc)

I voted pro wiki in the relevant thread (this thread in here is found by nearly no one), and I would have contributed.
But right now I feel being ridiculed by paradox (aod, ic, dh mess, new "funky" forum style disregarding useability, "like" button, aso).

So if paradox goes mainstream, I will act as a mainstream customer by "demanding" stuff without contributing. ie:
demanding a bug free game, but I dont report bugs anymore (as I did before)
asking for a wiki/info, but not providing info (although I could, eg res/ic calculator excel sheet in signature)
keeping ideas to myself, since I dont get paid for posting them (wishlist thread)

so when before I felt that with my input I d contribute to a community/project,
I d now feel, that I m milked for low by a mainstream profit company

overreacting?
no, because it doesnt matter what you say, it matters what the other one hears

So I take it you won't be contributing?

On topic, I would definitely make use of a wiki if available.

The main issue is, that a wiki needs admins and contributers, and there are atm lots of active wikis on paradoxian.
But if a wiki becomes obsolete in the near future anyways (darkest hour, iron cross), the incentive to contribute (without payment) goes down rapidly.
The time increments of new hoi versions became too short with dh and ic, and the reliability of paradox for planning is non existent anymore.
I would just find it frustrating to put effort in something and a month later its useless.

So without (reliable!) infos on how the aod, dh and ic mess works out, this is (imho) a stillborn child.

Piotr and other, I think someone should take the liberty to make a copy of this thread on the normal forum asking for helpers there, since it is seen by 10x as many as this subforum.

I'd make a copy but I have no admin powers. I guess I can just post this kind of thread but I dunno if people would listen to a non-dev thread about a wiki as much XD.

Things are on the move now, will update you soon.
BSPiotr, you are still interested in taking a leading role in the AoD wiki (you stated that you would do an admin job), I presume?

Can anyone else interested please specify which level of contribution you are willing to take?
So eg
admin
heavy contributor
occacional contributor
or so

If a new thread is made, please ask specifically for the levels of contribution.

I will not take an important role, but may contribute occasionally.
However I seem to have a minor role in the take off phase, so I ll see it through instead of just walking away.

I will make a post in the wiki wish thread, pointing here in few minutes.

I would be very happy contributing - having been made redundant at the end of July I have a fair bit of spare time :D

My personal view is that an AoD wiki should focus on what is different from HoI2/Arma and also provide the detail the manual lacks - ie main target audience would be veteran players. This way I believe it would help 'market' AoD to customers old and new to the series (and perhaps those escaping from HoI3? ;) )

I will aim to post some more ideas in a day or two - but here is a taster - I would like to see a table listing every line from misc.txt with an explanation of exactly what it does and - where necessary - an indication of what changing it might do.

Yeah of course I'm interested. I'll gladly admin (I'm familiar with FTP/Microsoft Server/generalForumSoftware/etc. and can self-teach if a wiki relies on other backbone, and I know how to make "folders" and such in a wiki (so, like the only thing I'd need to learn is how to make a sandbox page and other wiki stuff like that)) and also be an occasional contributor. I tend to be a lurker until I find something that interests me and then I spend hours to finish it XD.

Let me know in this thread -- I posted in the other one where rafiki knows how to set one up from the wikifarm (which is quite easier than scratch xD). Hopefully he'll help out in helping us (and me) make one or point to a guide I can use to be ready lol.

Now that sounds like something I thought of, and combining it with Q/A w/ Lennartos. I'd like to tackle the weird errors one might see, such as the n>=0, esc, pTransport-getConvoy(), and etc.

I might have some interest, but it really depends on the situation. Bit paradoxic to say the least

include a (tm) ;)

Doublepost for Herpa-durp.
I'm letting rafiki know via email. My own brain is swimming in test materials, sorry for being thick @_@

As promised here is a proposal for content for a wiki with my rationale. It is based around what information I would like to have as an AoD owner (primarily what is not in the manual); and what I think a prospective purchaser would like to know - especially if they have previously played any of the HoI series.

WHO might use a Wiki?
1. Owners of AoD
2. Owners of vanilla HoI2 / Arma
3. Disgruntled / overwhelmed HoI3 owners
4. Complete newbies to the whole HoI experience

WHY would they want one?
1. Full list of all the new features / changes
2. Understand all the new features - especially how some of them work
3. Gaps in the manual (and lack of an index)
4. Help them decide whether they want to buy it or not
5. Improve their gaming experience, playing style, production and research strategies etc etc
6. Modding
7. Problem solving

WHAT information do some / all of those user categories want / need?
1. List of all new features with detail of exactly how they work
2. List of all the changes / tweaks / fixes from vanilla HoI2/Arma [overlaps with 1. above]
3. List of what has not changed
4. Tables of data and stats - especially where there are differences from vanilla eg brigades
5. Modding section - full line by line guide to misc.text plus anything else which was difficult or impossible to mod in vanilla; links to AoD mods and utilities; mod 'matrix' giving an overview of what has been changed
6. Technical section covering installation / patching / different resolutions etc
7. Multiplayer section
8. Veteran's Dos and Donts section - which would lead nicely into any updated strategy guides
9. Best New Features - selected by players via some forum polls

Style-wise - some parts really need screenshots (production screen, advanced sliders!) to explain them clearly - not sure if there are limitations on what a wiki can include.

Also I dont know if information which is more about 'marketing' the game is frowned upon on a wiki - so maybe a stickied 'Why buy AoD?' thread would be more appropriate?

So - all comments / suggestions welcome :)

The Wiki is up
I make a wiki on wikia and followed the guidelines in rafiki's HOI2 wiki, with some small changes.
The main page is unprotected for now, so please feel free to change sections around if you feel we need more/less information, and please start making new pages!
I would also ask that you sign (~~~~) at the end of every new page you make, or sign in the "talk" pages about your changes, as for now this is a "beta" release.
What this means:
1) If rafiki gives us space on paradoxian, then the wiki will move (and your contributions go with it, thus signing to keep track of who contributed what.)
2) I'll make a nice official-looking new thread in about a week if there is at least one person who decides to contribute, otherwise I'll still post a new thread in one week :p
