Any chance we can call foreign mediation? Was considering the Egyptians, who have no love for Carthage and are not allied to either party.

OOC: I guess that is theoretically possible. However, any sane Egyptian would say that they don´t want to touch that issue with a long pole. They are already in war against Seleucids and Egyptians may well favor Carthagineans because that would secure the border between them and Carthage.

A little indecisive, are we? That`s something for the human players to decide. Make something out of it.

MUAHAHAHAR

Lex Draconia

With the Republic expanding its territory, new social conflicts emerged. In newly conquered territories, the execution of the Census and the raising of Taxes usually lead to unrest among the population. Even more, since they had no Citizenship and thus a worse legal status than "true" Romans. Another source of unrest were the omnipresent slaves and their wish to be free again, which lead to a few major and several minor uprisings in roman history.

Questionable was, how the rebels had to be treated. Some said, that Rome should show no mercy, while others pointed to the reasons of the unrests as being of one`s own doing.

Option I: Pass the Lex Draconia. All rebels will be punished. Since rebels know, that they have to expect no mercy once they take up arms, they will fight with more determination. But the population in the appropriate provinces might welcome executions as measure to restore order and discouragement for further unrest. (-1 roll modifier when fighting against Rebels / Slaves; Chance of 50% for +5 happiness in appropriate Province after having beaten the Rebels / Slaves)

Option II: Reject the Lex Draconia. No effect.

Support Lex Draconia. True Romans must respect our traditions. The highly esteemed Senators should remember how Vestal Virgin Tarpeia opened Rome´s city gates to the Sabines and how she was killed while she preferred her own interest rather than the interest of Rome. Traitors deserve to die. No mercy!

Senator Gaius Draconius

Yes, yes, we've heard it all before, Senator Draconius... and these slaves you dismiss as worthless rabble include highly trained gladiators, comparable in military skill to only the finest of our legions.

Nevertheless, for once, I am inclined to agree with you, we have had far too many revolts lately, and if we are going to war, we need to be able to keep the order in our provinces.

Vote in favor of Lex Draconia

On the matter of Lex Draconia:

I will support this. But the senate has to know that if we agree with this that we will have to keep a good general (lvl 2) behind to fight these rebels.
If we are not willing to do this we shouldn't agree with this.

I will run for consul these elections:

In my term in office i will have the following goals:

1) End the war in Gaul
2) Closer our ties with Macedonia trough a trade agreement
3) Keep Spain out of the hands of Carthage
4) Grand statehood to loyal provinces (eg: Venetia)

I hope with these clear goals that i can get the support of the senators.
I would also like to stress the importance of 2 consuls. These last few years we had only one and you could clearly see that power corupts.

My last act as Pontifex i will try in improve the happiness in the following provinces: Lugdinensis, Campania, Etruria, Latium and Umbria.

Lucius Aquila

A genuine question Draconius, were you only taught about Tarpeia by your tutors? All we seem to have heard from you is blather about the Tarpeian rock, that all captured rebels should be executed goes without saying, order must be restored! Lest the rebellious slaves spread their own anarchic desires to the plebs!

Q. Silvius Naso

I'll run for the office of Pontifex Maximus, being the sole Consul of Roma exhausted me with the weight of responsibility, and while I fear not every choice I made was the most wise, I think I can look back to my mandate and say it could have been much worse. Still, I believe to be more useful to the Republic spreading our faith and values, keeping public order and pleasing the Gods.

I will support Lucius Aquila's bid for the Consulate, believing him to be a man of good sense and honor, which is exactly what Roma needs in these dire times.

Your Consul, Quintus Livius Varro

Woody your joining?

Probably not, then I'd be obligated to do things, from this point, I can sling mud at the other senators without having to put the work in :p

I think you should either join or stop that right now. It shows very poor sportsmanship that you participate the game just to sling mud. I have decided to put you on my ignore list because of your bad behavior.

I think you're taking things a little seriously. Regardless, it remains my choice whether I stand for any position within the game.

EDIT - But, if GM demands it, then I will join the game and orate with a vengeance.

Forgive me for butting in, but this is a very roman thing to do. I know I'm guilty of sometimes allowing myself to get satisfaction out of a game almost purely from slinging mud :D

Slinging mud is an essential component of forum games :p

I probably just hit a sore spot. Poor FD was evidently pretty proud about the Tarpeian rock research he'd done.

I`m not amused. If you want to join, do so and behave properly. If not, go somewhere else. Last warning before contacting the Mods.

For all others: 24 hours left for candidacies and orders as well as posting statements toward Carthage and Lex Draconia.

Fair play.
