Can't find any refereces about this on The Independent's website. Maybe their search function is broken...

Nope,

The forum could quite easily handle posts, but they have chosen not to do so.

Anyway, bed for me.

What does this have to do with the search function??
I envision this getting closed soon.

The PC industry is dying I think as it simply wont wake up to the next generation of buyers. (I'm 12, I have a question and I want an answer).

Weird stuff aside, people have been saying the PC gaming industry is dying ever since it started. It still seems to be doing ok though.

hmm there IS a search function,it's called Google there and there is a sticky explaining how. I made you a link that you should save in bookmarks. the only thing you need to do is write the query after the block of text

The main problem I find with that mechanic is that it is more complicated than an in-site function. If you are not an HTML person, it can be pretty challenging to hone in your search. For example, I followed your link, and replaced the search term at the end of the phrase with "Migration." I got about a gazillion hits.

I use Google Advanced search a lot for general web searching; if it was obvious how to include more boolean permutations and limitations, this limited user friendliness would be mitigated somewhat, but what would be even better would be a dedicated search engine inside the site. I realize that very few firms have these, so I'm not actually expecting it. But please don't counter my claim that "it is not that easy" by saying by simply saying "yes, it is easy." I find it more complicated than (e.g., Google advanced search for general web searching). I am one user. Toby appears to be a second user. There are at least two of us. Indeed, I've seen other people say the same thing.

I agree it is a bit hard to follow the OPs arguments about Socialism-Capitalism, but the main point I got from his first post was this: a less than ideal search engine on site reduces appeal to newcomers. This does not help Paradox to expand its market penetration. Because Paradox is one of the best (few?) remaining carriers of the "torch of good computer-based strategy gaming" (yes there are others, but increasingly even the biggies seem to be going in the console direction) I think the implication is that, the full potential to promote the thriving of PC gaming is being missed by not having a top-notch on site search engine.

If it has been tried and crashes the site, that is a real shame, and I'm certainly in no position to assess the cost-benefit of making it work versus leaving as is.

Still, I think the point we are making that, maybe it _would_ be worth the cost to make it work is worth considering. That is what I took to be the core coherent idea in the OP.

If you put in such a simple search parameter, you're going to get a gazillion hits, and likely not what you want, whether it's a forum search or a google search using the "this site only" feature.

Now, I'm not saying that Paradox shouldn't try to get a search function, I'm just saying that at this time they can't and that there is a very viable replacement.

What's Google Advanced Search?

Eh, maybe. But many people who can't figure out how to search end up registering and asking their questions in one of the forums anyway. They still get their answer, and likely a few links to relevant threads from people who do know how to search. I know a working search would make a lot less of those threads, though.

Of course, then you have the people who never search, never look at stickies, never do anything on a site (even with a search feature) than post their question no matter how simple or complex. Some people "can't be bothered" to do a search when there are forumites that come to them to answer a question.

If it has been tried and crashes the site, that is a real shame, and I'm certainly in no position to assess the cost-benefit of making it work versus leaving as is.

It has several times. And that's just in the 18 months I've been here.

Do other people still not have a true forum search function? I seem to have it back since the recent forum upgrades. The major issue with google search is that it can't search in the secured forums (tech support & bug reporting). Unfortunately the new forum search doesn't seem to find any posts made prior to the forum upgrade.

And here is me not impressed with the spam fest.
You guys know better.
