OOC: At one place that is true. I think we shouldn´t merge understrength legions. We should keep full strength legions and 2/3 strength legions at Central Gaul while reinforcing 1/3 strength legions in nearby provinces. I assume that the Gauls also have couple of tribal units with 1/2 strength and all of their units are stacked in one province. They cannot reinforce their troops fast enough to replace their losses.

Reinforcing a legion which is depleted to 1/3 strength will cost 50 denari. Merging legions would mean that we would spend 100 denari to build new legions to replaced the merged ones in the future. Also, we will spend lot of denaris to increase happiness in provinces where we will recruit new legions. We may lose legions in battles but we should not consider merging our legions. My suggestion is that the commanding general will use full strength legions to be the front line units at the battle while legions with 2/3 strength should be reserve units in that province and legions with 1/3 should be moved away to be reinforced.

I recommend that the commanding general will put this strategy in his orders as well. Also, the commanding general should make his own sacrifice to the Mars, the God of War to give him success in the battle.

OOC: I agree, I just wondered if it is an option in the rules.

As for "putting this strategy in orders" - Consider it done.
I'm unsure how much leeway I have to state things like that though. Can I affect the battle in this way?

Patres conscripti,

No need for me to waste your time by detailing the end of the Venetian silly revolt. Let's just say that these rebels aren't likely to rise again, this side of the Styx.

Rome will now face another decisive test of her strength, greatness and glory. May the Gods grant her Victory!

First of all, I am ready to crush the Dalmatians rebels with my 2 legions. They didn't pick the best time since I was in the next province. And if they have any sense, they would surrender before my arrival - they should know me better.
That said, right now and before even moving to Dalmatia, I will personally go to Umbria for a handful of days to build an Arena there and improve happiness of the province (taking advantage of the delayed departure for Dalmatia while the army waits for the Apulian legion to come).

Speaking of happiness, I have to say I agree with Tiberius Belisarius: we'll have to grant citizenship to Liguria or Venetia soon, or stop spending money and Pontifex' precious time there. Increasing their happiness is now useless if we don't plan to recruit troops in these provinces in the next years.

Concerning the Gaul War, we should withdraw the weakest legions from Central Gaul and let them reinforce in our nearby provinces, while we replace them with full-strength legions. So, I basically agree with our Consuls' plans for this war. Hopefully, we'll fare better next time - we shouldn't forget that Vercingetorix is busy raising money to recruit more troops.

For the next elections, it's unwise for me to run for Consul, therefore I will run for Quaestor - unless the Senate prefers me to be Aedile. Of course, if the Consuls feel my military skills will be required in the next years, I'll stick to my Tribune offices.

Valete!

We need a Quaestor more then a Aedile.
Leaving 100-200 credits behind every turn is far worse then spending more on the few buildings we are going to build in the next few years.
Since i don't think its a good idea to build ports in a warzone i don't think we will be building alot.

We should consider starting a temple- and arena building program, though.

Apparently, it's a Senator's job ;)

Agreed but:

Lets say you can get 150 credits extra every turn. Thats 1200 credits.
You will never be able to save 1200 credits as an Aedile keeping in mind that the arena's are being build by the senators not the Roman Empire.

I'm not disagreeing, just noting that building temples is a good idea. Especially in high-happyness provinces where we might want to start recruiting soon.

Senators!

I have decided to run for the office of Quaestor, as the current office holder sadly lacks ability. I would also like to annouce that I shall be ordering the construction of an Arena in Latium in memorium for the brave Roman soldiers who have already lost their lives in the current war against Gaul.

I'll run for Consul, as I've already mentioned to some of my colleagues. Roma needs a Consul who has military and administrations skills, along with my charisma, to pass the multitude of challenges awaiting us to prove that we are true romans.

Sadly, the campaign will consume my funds, so I can't contribute to the Circus Maximus. But I promise to host gladiatorial games should we crush Gaul!

Your Pontifex Maximus, Quintus Livius Varro.

OOC: Uhm, wasn't Middelkerke already building an Arena in Latium as well? :p

edit:
Personal orders:
- Recruit clients:
- Burn another 75 denarii to gain the favor of the gods (lady luck, really) in my attempts to defeat the gaul.
- Offer a public reward of 25 denarii for any information concerning the source of the funds flowing into the Gaulish coffers, with a bonus of 25 denarii if proof can be provided.

Accompanying RP post will follow if / when I have time. I'm burning through personal funds quite quickly this way, but it's all for the greater glory of the empire.
I was considering offering a similar reward for Vercingetorix' head, but I suspect that will only make him more popular ..

Another speech. Unfortunately I could not find the text for it or I would have made some 'minor' alterations :)

So the Romans are the outnumbered defenders of their country right now? Hmmm... :p:)

Latium is already taken :)
