This is not a bug, it is a change with the latest patch. I think it was made to help the AI a bit.

Best regards
Kirkegaard

I think you have to go back to 1.05 to get that. Buy that will be a huge loss I think. So it really have to be important to do that.

There's no way just to fix that manually somewhere in the settings somewhere? I think it's very annoying that promoting leaders don't lead to a lower skill, since that makes it unusefull to use others than generals all the time. What is the meaning with Mj Generals at all then?

They still gain exp. at a much faster rate.

Maybe if we address the petition to devs?

They are aware of the opposition to this change since the very day when it was announced, and since then didn't do anything and rather went in the opposing direction, changing the promotion AI in order to fuck promotion up as much as possible. The current situation is completely horrible. I hoped that at least AI promotion would be a way to avoid this new system, but they changed it so that it will typically pick up people like Manstein and Guderian and promote them to field marshalls on Jan 1st 1936. You can't possible come with a worse solution - at least when a powergamer that had no sense of historical plausibility tried to do this in HoI2, he was being punished by the game. Now everybody is basically forced to do it. When I asked why on earth did they do it, the answer was - "the feature stays". Whatever.

Why on earth would you want it back? Its completely illogical to loose skill after a promotion anyway.

It is completely logical from both gameplay and realism points of view.

Amallric, your hard tone never ends to amaze me - you are quite an icon on these forums he he.

Sorry to hear devs want to stick with current "solution" though.

@Lenartos, Wyking, Radu - please do consider making a better solution for this if you find some extra time. Warm thanx if you succeed.

I do agree completely with Amallric, the devs must have invested a substantial amount of time to screw something up that worked just fine before. By removing the promotion penalty they have simply rendered an entire game component obsolete. Well, I could live with that, you turn auto promotion off but there is indeed little that keeps you from promoting Manstein and such to highest ranks the first day. This was way better in earlier versions. Now in 1.07, for all its merits, the AI promotion sucks so much, since the AI keeps promoting ahistorical nobodies to highest ranks that I ask myself, how is that going to help the AI led nations if the home fleet is commanded by Great Admiral Mitchell (skill 2, ideal rank 2) while Admiral Cunningham is sitting at home taking a nap. To the devs: please change this back to where it was before, because it just does not make any sense! The AI promotion needs to follow the leader files, otherwise the AI will even get weaker than before!!!

P.S. You can improve this mess a little bit if you set the promotion ratios in the AI files for your scenario all to ZERO. THe AI will still occasionally promote nonsense but much less.

I don't like this at all.

If I have a general with level 4 and experience 30 for example I want him to lose a level when i promote him ie to 3 but keep the experience in this case 30, otherwise what stops me promoting all my guys all the way to field marshall on day 1? I'd have a buttload of Lvl 4 field marshalls

It really REALLY sucks. Sorry but it does.

To add my 2 cents, this ruins the game and I am no longer interested in AoD. I recently switched from Arma based on inputs from this forum but I can't see how AoD is superior with "improvements" like this. Perhaps it is time to look at HOI III but I like the maturity and alternate reality (1964 timeline) of AoD/ARMA. Do the developers even look at this forum and if so, can they chime in on their refusal to budge on this issue??? Couldn't the new IC patch fix this back for those of us that prefer a game with some historical reality? And I don't understand the argument that a General shouldn't lose skill as he moves up; I'm in the military and it's ludicrous to think I could step promote some peon straight to Field Marshall without some serious repercussions. Loss of skill is the best way to create balance and realism (incl. Historical realism).

AFAIK I've read that the devs. added this, to help the AI out. Usually the AI tends to promote leaders without "looking" at their skill, resulting in Skill: 0 Field Marshals/Generals. It's OK for me. I just don't promote them to Field Marshal. I promote them that much, so they can handle their lead divs. And if they earned Skill and Exp., then I promote them to Field Marshal. So no big thing for me.

"Powergamers" will use this feature to promote officers to a rank which they historically achieved at a later date, or not at all. This somehow makes the game worse for you people, really?

If you don't want Mannstein as a FM on day one, then don't promote him to FM on day one? You have the option to use the Field Marshals given to you, Blomberg, Falkenhausen etc.
