Every once in a while I get a large influx of characters from a single family coming to my court. Does anyone know why this happens? I am guessing that these new courtiers are from a recently destroyed clan.

Also does anyone know why a particular family chooses to come to one's court. Is this determined by marriages?

Yeah they come from a destroyed clan. As for why they choose you, I think this is influenced by your relations.

Thanks. I'm still not sure how this one family knows me. They must be related to someone's bride. It would make sense since most of my male characters have 4 wives.

You have a relation score with every other character in the game, you don't need any previous interaction with them. Also if your ruler has a high diplomancy stat he gets a relation boost with everyone, that could also influence why they choose you.

Yes, high diplomacy is the key factor in this. You could also work out an extremely complicated web of marriages and bribes for it but the flat boost to all characters is going to do more than that possibly could.
