Im just wondering because i cant always tell. When its announced that a certain person in your court has an ambition for something like Master at Arms etc. Does it mean that that character's Diplomacy, Intrigue or military level has gone up? So you can later on choose a different minister to run that position? I was wondering if that was what it meant when a persons had an ambition in one of those fields. Thanks for any ideas on this.

If you fulfil their ambition, you gain +15 relations with them while they remain in the post.

I have not seen any statistic improvements at all.

Also, it only ever seems to be people who aren't the best in that court role that have the ambition for it. I once had a courtier with 18 Diplomacy, 3 Martial and 0 Intrigue have the ambition to become Master of Arms. -.-

I wish there was more ways you could influence character development.

Thanks for the replies. So it sounds like you have to jostle your minsters around a bit then? Is there any penalty for removing a minister like he has a lower opnion of you, or he loses any of his abilities? Hope to hear on this thanks.

It seems to me like regardless of ambition, everyone in a Master post gets a +15 to relations. Ambitions do not seem to do anything once fulfilled or when the post is reneged. I have not noticed any trait increase. I have however noticed that it is generally the person with the worst stat for that job that has the ambition to attain it!

I just ignore the ambitions and pick whoever has best stats for that job.

You are correct where I was only partially, thanks for correcting me :)

What he said.

Thanks, one final thing. As a few previous points have been said previously about picking the person with the right stats is best, which seems obvious but how much do the traits of a person affect their actions in these positions. Thats the trouble i find with this game you have two levels of a persons background to consider; one is the statistics of a person like their honour, military and intrigue points. Then you have their different traits and im not sure if you have to consider that when giving them a ministerial post as well. Any views on this and is it important? Thanks for the replies.

All the traits are already added to the statistics (Diplomacy etc.), so go by statistics alone. Courtiers don't often marry so don't worry about fertility or health. Traits to watch out for are ones that lower your relationship with them, for example if they're ambitious, or you are arbitrary and they are just (conflicting personalities). Check the manual for these.

You can see the effects of those right away from the opinion value, so still no need to look for spefic traits. Just check that the person with highest skill doesn't have a negative opinion about you, and there's really nothing else to consider.

But what happens if a master has a negative opinion of you? Does he work slower on improving castles for example or what?

To be honest I haven't noticed any negative effects about having someone who hates me as a master, but might be that it could trigger CK like negative events. Maybe a look at event folder is in place.

Less likely to offer kokujin/diamyo titles, less likely to allow you to leave the clan peacefully, less likely to re-grant titles after your leader dies (diamyo titles), less likely to promise next kokujin/diamyo title after event to write a letter requesting next title.

Recently after a military campaign i was promised a new title by my lord. Never heard anymore then my Kokujin was going to send a reminder to his liege. But sadly he died without knowing and actually he had a good relationship level with his liege. So it looks like you still cant get what you want if youre in the good books of your boss.

I've had 90 relationship with my Liege, and I still wasn't granted a kokujin (it went to his son iirc.) so we both took a relationship hit, because I was promised one. If you play as a clan leader, you can promise land to multiple people, but anyone who isn't granted the land takes a relationship hit. Tough luck about the leader thing. If the clan leader doesn't capture the province himself (initiate the siege) he won't come into posession of the kori to give away. Vassals are VERY hungry for capturing land themselves (as you can imagine being one yourself).

He means having them as one of your three "Master of.." administrators. Not your liege lord.

...

The benefit of appointing one to their post of ambition is that they get +1 in the relevant stat. I will often appoint one for a day to get Martial bonuses, and often one of the others too if their stat isn't totally in the tank. Also keep in mind that your current appointee for the position, who has a high stat, may also be getting pretty old so you'll want to always take opportunities to groom the guy's future replacement. Because they'll all die off eventually.
