Will the main unit be the regiment? And will unit experience be included. If it is the regiment will we be able to combine the into divisions like hoi3 or will the army/corps be like eu3?

The common unit will be the brigade, but made of regiments (for historical accuracy and chrome, including showing nice Napoleonic uniforms). Army "tech" will allow you to group those brigades in divisions, corps and armies... so it's closer to HoI3 here... More on that later

I guess the OOB will be historical? AGEOD has made a point of this in the games I have played. So will the exotic units make it? Units like the Chasseur Britanniques and the Regiment de Watteville?, the Regiment Etrangers for the French army? the Engelbrecht Regiment for Sweden?

That's just one of the images from the alpha version showed to the press... ;)

This is very exciting to hear, I love very idea for this game so far, thanks for revisiting the true age of empires.

I've been thinking about this for a while - how the card system of the old NCP could be used in the new setting.
Instead of the shooty-shooty sprites, and the nato counters might also be problematic -

how about a set of various sized/shaped "chess pieces" - which would include a (non-waving, please) battle flag with the commanders Name, if not his portrait, on it.
The Size/Shape of the chess piece would let the player know immediately if it was a group of independant regiments, a Division, a Corps, or an Army level commander.

Two stupid sprites shooting each other in the face over and over again ... I am hoping for better than that.

I'd far rather have animated sprites of the different soldier types - in correct uniforms, please, and including cavalry sprites - than chess pieces.

And I'm not sure why giant placards with portraits of leaders towering over the countryside (old AGEOD style) are so much better than giant soldiers doing exactly the same thing?

I love the place cards or counters, I turn the sprites off in every game that has the option to play with counters or place cards.

(Why army/game pieces instead of toy soldiers?)
Basically because the sprites give little or no information about the size of force, its composition or who commands it. The sprites will be there regardless if players prefer them or not. This isn't a request to do away with sprites. I am asking about an alternative. Leadership is an important factor. Will we have to 'mouse over' each icon to find out who is leading it? I thought if the card style (2-D graphics) from NCP was a problem, a set of game pieces with leadership names would be a compromise toward that direction.

will the brigade generals/leaders be auto generated when a new brigade is created or will it go off a leader list?

SAS,
good question as usually generals were appointed by higher command. As the developers have said they are using historical commanders, so i assume that it might work like HOI3, you have a list and then appoint someone to the vacancy.

I hope very much that your way is implemented.

I expect all the brigade names (which seem to be the basic unit of NCP-II) will simply be entered into the game database like was the case of names in previous Ageod and/or Paradox games. I doubt there will be actual commanders for these, as from a game perspective there is no need to have commanders for the lowest level unit (in my own designs I almost always apply the two levels up rule of thumb, that is, brigades basic unit, then generals are included starting with corps level commands)...

Another point, it would probably be pretty tough to determine every single officer having commanded a brigade during this time period and among the relevant nations (major as well as minor). I remember when I researched a 1812 Russian Campaign game I had a lot of trouble for anything bellow brigade level for the french, and starting trouble for brigade level for the Russians (of course there was also the language barrier to account for). For a more generic Napoleonic game that I never pursued much further I even had trouble determining the names of division commanders of certain countries. So research could be one limiting factor here as well (then again, if it is as I assume and a brigade receives a name from a list at creation, there will at least be nothing to worry about concerning replacement leader names and such, as the name will be largely flavour)...

I would say that in this time period that the leader was as important or more important than the composition of the force they commanded, so having an image of the leader would be more meaningful. I know that when playing a Napoleonic game I will think in terms of "Soult's Force" or "Wellington's Troops" than "The 4th and 7th Corps".

Indeed, I also liked the trait specific modifies tailored to each leader of napoleonic campaign 1.

I never liked the terrible 3d sprites in pdox games, so i hope you could give us an option to change to 2d portraits like in RoP for example. The only good thing coming out from this new engine is probably the fluidity of zooming in and out.
