my vision of rome 2 is slightly different to that of the original rome, my idea is probably an impossibility, but I like to dream!, wouldn't it be awsome if there was two modes, one which allowed you to pick a ancient state and guide it and it's ruling class through the ages, the second mode would allow you to choose a individual character, or family, and guide them through the ages!, even if they are landless characters, the game could be keept fun by a vast swarm of events, political happenings within your country, war, intrigue!, and best of all, you could easily switch between modes as you play, your character about to die but you want to continue leading as governer of carthage?, simply switch to state mode!, rome has seen its final days and its remaining population is scattered? simply switch to a roman character and guide him back to glory!, both of these modes could be much more character based, like ck2, balancing RPG and Strategy-sim perfectly....oh plus I want TWO consuls of rome k thx lol....so wwhat's your guys vision of ROME 2?!!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????!

If they just copy everything from CK2, I'll be happy...

There would be no real point in making rome 2 then ;)
Characters are a lovely touch and though I doubt we'll be able to I wouldn't mind seeing marriage in rome 2 as well we don't need as many details in rome than ck2 but if there are things that i'd like to be kept it's mostly the different laws that allowed a different experience whether you played rome, sparta ou a barbarian tribes.

On the other end the barbarian concept wasn't as fun as it could have been mostly because of the colonisation/wild lands, it could be abstracted with a sort of mix between culture and rebels system with the further you adventure in wild lands the more resistance you get but the longest wild land is in touch with your territory the less wild it becomes. (trading could also have an effect there if we manage to keep trade and specific resources per province which brought a lot of fun in early game and help differentiate countries/challenges)

But well if Rome 2 really is in the making then design is already done

Extend the dates forward so we will have more nations to play with(invading huns, goths, vandals, etc) and more factions.
Also extend the map eastward to at least include western India. EuRome and VV are too restricted in scope.

I strongly suport the idea of a more CK orientated game. Somehow being the pater familias of a great patrician family seems way more fun then being the omnipresent silence force behind the roman republic.
Can you imagine the possibilities? administring and growing your estates, getting political suport for some election, spending large sums of money to organize gladiatorial games, trying to get the suport of the people, being aloted a governorship with some troops and do the unthinkable like Cesar and conquer Gaul for the glory of the senate and the people of Rome! Of course the ultimate challange in the game would be to become imperor!

Also there was always two ideas from the total war series that i always like to see in the paradox games. The first in crusader kings or Rome is the ability to have reteiners. For exemple in Rome, having a bodyguard, an erudict greek slave, a master assassin etc. I always tought this was a nice feature from total war that would fit well in CK or Rome. Maybe in Rome you could even have a feature of a slave market...

The other feature is that in total war expansions we have seen specific scenarios and i would like that in paradox games. I would love to have a viking cenario for CK2 or maybe a helenic cenario to Rome, sometimes i get tired of always the same map.

An game based on Pax Romana (old game). A game with elections of 2 consuls, 2 praetor, 4 aedilis and quaestor.

my vision would be:

- larger map to include, at least, all of Arabia, Horn of Africa, Northern India the Gange delta and Central Asia to the Tarim Basin and northern Kazakstan
- more detailed trade system, with trade routes, share of market for trade goods, etc.
- more detailed political system, with more governments such as city states, etc. and local governments and possibly elections for regions or cities (cities in the hellenistic world were still basically city states even if under monarchic rule)
- possibility to build new cities or settlements in provinces (similar to CK)
- more flavor with philosophies and religions, less focus on tech research
- way more detail in army and navies, more units, tactics, etc. Also, make unit type tied to the good of the province and not to trade, i.e. even if Rome trades with an elephant producing province, it should not be able to recruit elephants...
- completely overhauled barbarian system. No more barbarians but hordes like in Divine Wind, but more dynamic and able to migrate.
- Colonization should change, no more colonization to Scandinavia. It should be slow and difficult, reflecting the interaction between colonists and locals
- More diplomatic options, like client states, foederati, etc. Royal marriages between dynasties for alliance.
- plots, ambitions, etc. borrowed from CK2

- Although a bigger map is nice it's not really needed in a Rome game (much more in an alexander game though if that ever comes out)
- I kinda liked the trade system in Rome, true it was "basic" but that simplicity allowed it to be easy to use and focus on early in game. True enough that after a while it was less important and might need some refinement but having some specific goods that give bonuses is a nice touch that allows for different starting experience.
- Agreed, this was the most fun part
- Not sure it's necessary really, a way to picture growing settlement would be nice though
- I kinda liked the way religion was pictured although it was a dice roll at game start and often tricky. Tech research while not really "realistic" could be traded for an ideas/influence concept but the chore mechanics are not bad imho.
- It should indeed be much more focused on formation and that would be a big difference to CK2 which is a bit too abstracted in combat for my taste (prefered EU3/Rome visual representation) but I disagree with you concerning elephants, although not realistic being able to recruit elephants anywhere if you have the trade is most of all fun.
- The barbarian system was not working too well, almost impossible to play and not really interesting I suppose but the barbarians could be pictured differently with a sort of sphere of influence system. The longer you trade with them the nicer the are and easy to colonize. The more you wage war against them the more they "gang up" (or the horde system you mention but I find the horde system unbalanced as it cripples players who play smaller areas more than big empires). Ability to have some barbarians working against others would be a nice treat as well.
- rest sounds good ;)

In a republic like Rome, you choose a patrician family. e.g. the Julia family and as the Pater familias, you try to place as many family members (or friends) in many political offices, governorships, and military positions. I don't know the conditions of getting a "game over" though.

In a monarchy, you play as king or vassals a la CK2, with political and military positions to fill too.

I'm not sure on how to handle the "tribal" nations.

The government of the nation can be change, of course.

This... of course set in the correct time period, but yes, ck2 template for rome 2 would be awesome.
My guess is that using the CK II build of the current engine and map (or slightly improved versions of them) is almost a certainty.

I hope there are more Greeks and Persians than Romans though. :(

game over would last menber of family is exile and does return before they die or there kill.
