Debriefing

Gentlemen,

first of all let me tell you, that I was considerably pleased with the first mission of our unit in this theater. Although 6th Platoon suffered casualties, our objective, the establishment of a base for future operations, has been successfully achieved.

During the post-combat investigations eight dead Viet Cong have been found. Battalion has decided to give us the credit for four of them, the other four go to the Huey-crews. Our own casualty has been reported, but reinforcement is not available right now.

I`ve got a message from Captain Townsend from the 66th Engineers, who likes to thank us for the efficient protection of his men.

As far as I am concerned, I am almost happy with the performance of the Platoons, nevertheless a few remarks. First of all good job of establishing a defense perimeter, although 3rd and 4th were too close to each other.

Lt. Longbows performance was good in occupying the T-junction and let his Platoon spread out, although there IS a risk of overstretching it. But Battalion told me to remind you to treat the local civilians with respect. It is their country and we are here to protect them.

Lieutenants Cheef and Cooper. Your decision to attack shortly before the end of the operation was correct, although I would have also accepted a small retreat. In fact anything is better than not acting at all. But gaining the initiative and encircling the enemy is of course the more proper way that stands in the tradition of our Armed Forces.

Battalion told me, that we will have a few days break before our next operation. We got through our baptism of fire, but from now on the war really starts.

Captain Stuckenschmidt
CO B-Company, 2nd Battalion

(OOC: Nice first operation. Tomorrow I`ll post some additions / modifications to the rules that came to mind as result of this scenario. Then I`ll finish the second scenario. Dunno when exactly we`ll begin with it, but not later than Monday.)

Vietnam Wargame 2 - Patch 1.01

Okay, people, as mentioned I`ve spend some thoughts about the rules and there are three changes. First of all I adjusted the Sight-rules

Unless stated otherwise, a Platoon can see across 8 squares, until it is blocked by hills, houses or woods. In special cases (Fog, Heavy Rain), the line of sight is reduced.

Of course someone can see further than 8 squares (supposed to be 800 meters) on a bright day with no obstacles around, but the idea is that one can`t make a proper distinction whether the guy 1.000 meters away is harmless or not. This is the first step in introducing Civilians to the game, but I still have to figure that out.

Then there is a new paragraph:

Cover, Entrenchments, Fortifications
- Cover is „natural“ protection provided by wood-, small building- and large building-squares. Units in these squares will automatically seek cover. Any unit in cover can not be detected from more than two squares away, unless it fires or moves.
- Entrenchments can be build in plain- and hill-squares by any Infantry unit. Since digging in takes time, two turns without movement / combat are necessary to finish them.
- Fortifications are more stable defence installations that can only be build by Engineer units

I hope this is pretty self-explanatory. If not, please ask.

And finally an addition to the Support-section:

- Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) move at a speed of up to 12 squares per turn. They may not enter wood- and field-squares. They may transport troops (1 Infantry Platoon per APC platoon). They may support an Infantry attack on an enemy unit (making it more efficient) or start an own attack on an enemy unit. In the latter case, they attack with Heavy Machine Guns and have an efficient range of 5 squares.

Again, if there are uncertainties, feel free to ask. The whole rules are in post 2 or soon(tm) in my sig.

Briefing

From: Battalion HQ
To: B-Company

Date: January 26th, 1966

Situation

During the last days, the 2nd Battalion could secure the area north of Phan Loc, while the 1st Battalion cleared the area south of it. Now Brigade Command wants us to advance westward. Bravo-Company will be in the center of the advance along the major road No. 29.

The northern part of the area is mostly clear, but with a lot of rice fields. There are two villages (yellow), Song Can in the southeast and Cam Tay in the northwest. In the southern part you`ll find a large area of dense woods.

Bravo-Company will enter the area at Z9 (Platoons 1-3) and Z11 (Platoons 4-6).

Objectives

This operation has the following objectives B-Company has to achieve.

1. Enter the two villages and secure them with at least half a Platoon (10 Soldiers) each at U20 and F7
2. Establish a checkpoint (entrenchment) near the junction at square F12
3. Destroy all enemy forces or drive them out of the area

Intel

B-Company will probably face some resistance, although S2 expects the enemy forces to be less than 50 men strong.

Support

1st Battalion provides one Platoon of Armored Personnel Carriers M-113 (M), that will enter the area at Z10

(OOC: Deadline is Sunday 5 PM CEST. The M-113 are under your command. I hope everyone has read how they work. If there are different orders about what they are supposed to do, Company HQ will decide.)

My feeling is the viet kong will be in the woods, and we should stay together approaching them.

I will volunteer to help secure Song Can (southeast village) with at least half my platoon. I also suggest that the APC stay on the road. We can send another platoon in Z-9 north to secure the northern side of the road and the rice fields, and if they encounter trouble they can be supported by the APC and the rest of the platoons. My platoon (or part of it) will help to secure the southern road before the intersection, where I'll head south.

Ok guys, I'd suggest that we send 3 platoons and the APCs to the far objectives, whilst detailing the other 3 platoons to take the Southern Village. I'd suggest that 2 and 4 advance either side of the road whilst I lead 1 down the road, sticking with the APCs. Hopefully 2 and 4 can detach a few men to scout and clear those pink areas (Rice Paddies?) either side of the road, and I'll detach an element to scout ahead of our advance down the road. That leaves 3, 5 and 6 to advance and take the village. I'd suggest an inverse V formation with 3 holding in reserve behind the other 2, as that will both make movement easier, and allow you guys some mobility in a firefight.

Thoughts?

Also, Stuck, how many APCs per platoon?

Sounds like a plan. I'll bring up the western flank of the inverse V closer to the forest. 6th can have the eastern side. 3rd in reserve.

Also, we only have one APC, not multiple. Since we're concentrating a lot of strength in Song Can, I suggest we send it west with the rest of the company to increase their firepower.

EDIT: Looks like the amount of APCs have been changed. How many do we have, exactly?

The Platoon has four M113. For combat resolution purposes it is not possible to split it.

Well, crap.

Since we're sending half the company to one village, I suggest just sending all of the APCs down the road. They can help set up the road block at the intersection south of Cam Tay while the other platoon or two secures the village itself.

My thoughts exactly.

1st platoon, move diagonal onto the road a Y10 then advance to V10 cautiously. A pair of ten man columns on either side of the road, ready to dive off into the relative cover of the fields if needed. Have the APCs advance between the squads at walking pace, watch out for ambushes, particularly by AT units.

6th platoon also move towards V9, but send ten men to scout the nearest rice field. Stay together.

Aren't you supposed to be going south?...

5th Platoon move to V-12, to move further south and west once the rest of the company forms up.

I was going to go west along the road, and then south. I thought that's what we were doing.

Whose orders are we missing?
