The Messenger - Well, Russia is my best bet because it has Volga Tatar culture provinces (my accepted culture), and would always be the pain - so yeah, it's best target right now since they're biggest threat. Expansion to the east may be not worth it right now, since there are wrong cluture nomadic provinces there. Might be an option in the future, maybe even some colonisation of Siberia. South is again wrong culture provinces but Persia is quite rich. I may gain new powerful enemies if I expand there though. All in all, I still suffer from low Administrative Efficiency especially after annexation of Shirvan, so vast expansion is not the priority right now. Some modest conquest and continued modernisation is my strategy for now.

PU with Ottoman Empire would be cool indeed, especially since they're most powerful country in the whole world I think. Not sure if it's possible though.

Monday updates is just a coincidence, I may do some sort of world report soon. It's quite interesting actually, and not crazy mosaic of blobbiness that we can see in vanilla.

sprites, Mr. Capiatlist, Rifal - Indeed, fighting Crimea may not be in my interest right now. They are in Ottoman sphere of influence, so potentially I would have to fight with most powerful country in the game. Besides, weakening them may strengthen Russia - this is exactly what happened when I began to fight Kazan. Also, there would be risk of sharing border with Lithuania which could add another powerful, modern enemy to the list. Crimea in current shape serves as a very useful buffer state.

Hmm, a border with the Ottomans - better keep them happy or you'll truly be between a rock and a hard place! ;)

Nice progress, both the expansion and the changes in the society.

Fantastic AAR, maybe just a few more gameplay details would be nice but as a longtime MM player I can mostly 'translate' your updates into game terms :p

The Pensa-Simbirsk-Saratow region is really necessary to give you a real ability to defend in depth if you're suddenly attacked by Russia and this beneficial geopolitical situation isn't going to last forever - sooner or later P-L or Denmark-Sweden will fall into hard times and the Russians will capitalise, though perhaps your growing strength is enough for them to look to Crimea or further East.

Great job getting Shirvan, though - the unruly Alans might be a nuisance but your new southern border is easy to defend and that gold province will practically pay for the troops you need to put down revolts by itself! Northern expansion now seems like the only worthwhile route. The East is poor and though Crimea owns much wealthy land the last thing you want to do is weaken them for Russia to pounce on.

I guess most readaars here would expect you to take on Russia, but I understand your caution. Hopefully, a window of opportunity will open rather sooner than later. I understand Sarai and Bogutjar are still tribal, the last two provinces to be sedentarised, right? I'm also surprised there are Orthodox minorities in Sarai and Dagestan, but curiously not in Astrakhan (one would assume a CoT should atract all sorts).

I don't remember the MM Jizzya modifiers, was it really worth it?
As for biannual fairs what was your strategy for building them? Unlike artisan workshops not in every prov I guess. I never could really understand how to go about them, the workshop chain seems more straightforward.

Great read as always. Can't wait to learn what comes next.

I would understand if did not go to war with Russia. In fact, I would love to see a scientist/artistic ruler, but your nation is not all that modernized, but war is always entertaining and exciting.

I was thinking the same about Astrakhan when I saw that map. I guess orthodox merchants don't like Astrakhan that much.

Also, why do you only put the name of your capital on the last map? I would like to see more cities in Nogai (If that is possible of course).

How's the Muslim alliance system around you?

Who is a potential victim?

Very nice work as always. It seems you aren't quite as doomed as you thought. I look forward to where you go from here. I really like the in-depth narrative you're giving us. It seems like you're doomed to be permanently hostile to Russia, so you might as well try to weaken them while you can, though your caution is probably wiser.

Malurous - actually they are becoming quite problematic, since they have few of my neighbours in their sphere of influence, barring my expansion.

v1989 - at the Urals

TonyJoe - hopefully, eventually my modernisation efforts would pay dividends

Rabid - indeed, these provinces are absolute priority right now.

gabor - Sarai and Bogutjar are nomadic (but not for long), I've eliminated tribalism there. Yeah, I have no idea how these Orthodox minorities appeared in Dagestan and Sarai. I noticed them only while making last update.

Jizyia gives revolt risk and tax, I've chose it mostly for roleplaying reasons. Also, it is possible that by selecting it I've strengthened power of clergy faction.

As for biannual fairs - it's also not completely clear for me how they work. I know that if you don't build some, you get annoying events where merchants demand them - that's exactly what happened here.

The Messenger - Well, most of the cities have exactly the same name as province they are in.

RGB
- real spider web. Sibir is out since they are sphered by Ottomans, same with Crimea. Uzbeks are guaranteed by Russia and allied with powerful Khorasan. That leaves only Qara and Ak Qoyunlus not being allied with big boys - not really interested to expand to the south, though Azerbaijani culture provinces might be an option since I already have two of them. But, for now I'm too afraid of Russian stab in the back to risk wars elsewhere.

Imperial Aquila - Indeed - confining them to northern Russia proper, or even balkanising them is the priority, and until then my options are limited.

Alright, semi-update here with current situation in Europe (as of 1615):

1-59.gif

(I've cleaned some ridiciolous stuff out of this map, like Spanish Kola ;))

Spain PU'd and inherited Portugal, focusing on colonisation. They conquered Aztecs but Inca Empire is intact.

100 YW ended inconclusively with England holding on Aquitaine/Gascogne and Normandy. English managed to conquer Scotland and are colonising North America.

France is quite strong after absorption of almost all French minors, but for a long time was passive because of PU with Austria as junior partner.

Bavarian rulers became quite strong, since for almost whole century were elected for Emperors of HRE.

After Burgundian inheritance, Netherlands appeared - not sure how it happened exactly, probably some minor managed to form it.

Poland and Lithuania finished off and vassalised Baltic monastic states, and kept Russia at bay by alliance with Denmark-Sweden. Polish Lithuanian alliance may end though, since Poland went protestant.

Ottomans pushed hard into Europe, and are richest and most powerful country right now. Their advance slowed down a little bit though.

Castille-Portugal and Denmark-Sweden are really interesting! The colonial game is certainly going to turn out abnormally with one of the major players not existing. Perhaps the unusually strong England will make a better showing than it usually does.

Who the hell controls Canton?

Also, Trade buildings (Bi-Annual Fairs, Seasonal Fairs, Bazaars, etc) increase marginally the price of your trade goods, stabilitiy and your population growth while slightly decreasing taxes. At their higher levels they give % increases to your Trade and Production Efficiency. Also, if you spam them, your merchant faction starts to like you a lot more and your noble/bureaucrat factions like you less.

Mr. Capiatlist - hopefully :)

Rabid - Yeah, situation is developing quite interestingly. Maybe I'll even convert and continue this in Vicky 2 - we'll see. As for English colonies - they're plentiful:

Merrick Chance' - You mean China? It's 4 province minor called Nan Han.

Really loving this so far - your maps are beautiful. Working towards a PU with Crimea might be a good idea - then you can get more land without strengthening Russia :D
