Goddamnit. I need my fighters.

Fighter techs will have to wait for missile techs and thrust augmentation techs. Otherwise, we will have only slow and unarmed Fighters. We do indeed plan to weaponize as rapidly as feasible, though.

Professor Randakar has completed his prototype for our second-generation commercial rocket engine, based on Nuclear Pulse (Orion) technology. This advance has dramatically improved both the delta-V and the operational range of our planned Mule class Freighters, from less than 800 km/sec and 30 b-km range up to 1250 km/sec and 50 b-km range.

As soon as our pre-build completes, the first Mule class Freighter will be laid down in our shipyards.

We also have a yard retooling to build Plymouth Rock class Colony Ships, which has the same operational range as the Mule, and is 50% faster.

Professor Randakar has shifted our research focus to Thrust Augmentation, which is a prerequisite for both missiles and Fighters.

March 7th, 1954. Finally! One of our highly-skilled scientists... Professor Lord Strange with his +40% bonus, in fact... has gained enough Admin rating to take over the 20 research labs that we've been allocating to our major research effort. He will continue to focus on Thrust Augmentation, and afterwards unlock a ground unit-type so that we can start building ground forces.

When life handled me boring mission, I made fuel lemonade :D

Since we're turtling (good) I recommend slowly building up research labs and perhaps a couple more academies to improve our (so far pitiful) research output. The sooner we do that, the greater the rewards later.

We have also designed an Expedition class Troop Transport based on the Plymouth Rock class Colony Ship:

Unfortunately, the two classes are not sufficiently similar to be built in the same yard without retooling.

Will that mule class be able to reach the asteroid with the rich mineral deposits?

Will that mule class be able to reach the asteroid with the rich mineral deposits?

Easily. The Mule has an operational range of 50 b-km (so a two-way operational radius of 25 b-km) and the rich asteroid is at 8.3 b-km from the Sun.

Bentley returning from a sortie during the great unification

Having served on a carrier for most of the great unification, RepBentley had gained valuable experience as a naval aviator. That same experience would land him as an officer in the new space navy, the training was grueling if not downright sadistic at times. Hoping to see the stars he had high hopes to pilot his own ship when the day came and lead the fight to any alien son of a ***** that would get in his or humanities way.

That night while resting on his cot a rapt at the door and an envelope sliding under the door peaked his interest. Surely enough it was his MO and future orders. "No Specific Request", these words were written in large red letters at the end of the paper and left a hollow feeling in Bentley. "The goddamned heck is this? Might as well send back my request for a fighter pilot or other immediate available ship."

After spending some time finding the right documents and writing up his request with utter efficiency, he looked up from the small desk given to officers newly enlisted and stared out the window.

Ship being overhauled in the skunkworks above Earth

That right there was the latest geo-survey ship getting an overhaul before heading out again. Seeing the ships come and go seemed to ignite a wanderlust, and a desire to captain his own ship one day. The bloom of nuclear engines on the planetary horizon was a bold statement that humanity had finally reached the stars, a bold statement indeed.

Here is Captain RepBentley's service record so far:

Game start: January 1st, 1948.

20th November 1949: Promoted to Commander
24th October 1950: Assigned to Donkey 001 (Donkey class mini-Freighter)
28th January 1951: Promoted to Captain

March 27th, 1954. Professor Lord Strange has completed his research on the first level of Thrust Augmentation, a technology line essential to designing effective missiles and Fighters. He has begun work on the second tech in the same line.

June 17th, 1954. Our C-02 commercial shipyard has finished retooling for the Plymouth Rock class Colony Ship. This time I didn't sleep through the pre-build meeting, and all of the pre-fabbed ship components were ready in time. This pre-build will save us more than 18 months in ship construction time on each unit in the class. The first Plymouth Rock of a planned run of two has been laid down, and the shipyard has been ordered to continue its expansion towards the displacement required for Tugs, Orbital Fuel Mining Stations, and Orbital Terraformers.

August 11th, 1954. Professor Lord Strange has completed the second level of Thrust Augmentation. While he undertakes a paper study of potential sensor applications, one of our other researchers (an NPC) will use the 20 labs to unlock Garrison units, so that our Ground Forces Training Facilities can finally get into gear.

Seems like it is going along nicely...How long does it take to really get the ball rolling in regards to colonization, exploration, advanced ships, etc?

We can colonize Mars or Luna as soon as the first Colony Ship is launched (due out next year). The necessary life-support Infrastructure has already been pre-built. That should shake up the civilian (non-player) company into producing some space assets... NPC Freighters, Colony Ships and robot mining operations. Colonies need a military presence by the time they reach 10 million, so we are already building Garrison troops and can lay down a Troop Transport to move them out to the colony site as soon as the third shipyard reaches 30,000 tons capacity (again, that will be next year). The required pre-builds are underway now. Exploration is a somewhat longer-range project. We need three more theory techs before we can design Jump Engines, then an applications tech for each size of Jump Engine that we want to build; one more practical tech before we can design a ship that can search for Jump Points out of the Sol system; one more theory tech before we can design a Jump Gate Construction ship; and so on.

It doesn't hurt much to delay our break-out into the Galaxy for a few years... we'll be that much closer to having effective weapons and ships before we run into any uglies. Right now, any race we encountered could trash us with a single ship... we have no weapons, or even weapon designs, nor do we have the techs that we would need to design some. We're working on that problem now.

Im just posting to make sure that a notification appears in my box. Thank you

Are you certain?
Normally, you can tool a yard to the troop transport version and build the freighters there as well, but not the other way around.
Oh wait .. that colony ship isn't a freighter ;-)
Right, never mind.

I really dislike how a standard 5-cargo hold freighter tends to be 30-40% larger than a standard size colony ship. Usually I just design bigger colony ships (and troop transports!) just to keep the sizes identical.
That "not having to retool" advantage is much, much larger than you might suspect.

As I said before, I'd like to see some jump-point-defense bases build before we jump into anything. We have a good energy weapons researcher, so let's use that to our advantage.
That way we could bottle up theoretically superiour enemies in the systems we encounter them in while we research the capabilities we need to take the fight to them.
The jump-shock delay they get when they jump into our system should be enough for our defenses to tear them to pieces before they can act.
