Kso, I have a gift card that has 25$ on it, and I plan on buying either CKII or VicII on Amazon.ca. But I have no idea what to choose from. The only drawback for me when it comes to CKII is that there's so many expansions, I'll just feel like I'm "missing" something, and I don't like that (I won't have enough money left in the gift card to buy the expansions on Steam, and I have no idea if Steam accepts prepaid MasterCards). VicII on the other hand has one expansion, and I could afford that.. But both games look so damn good, I can't decide.

PS: I really enjoy politics, diplomacy and economics more then war. So yeah, take that into account. :p

You don't miss anything by not buying any CKII DLC, the patch included the new gameplay. You will be just limited in the nation playable, so if you don't want to play a muslim country or a republic you don't need these extensions. At the opposite, Vicky II is better with the extension A House Divided, and it will have a new extension in march anyway.

Concerning what to chose... it's your choice, both are excellent, Vicky is definitively more complex and focused on economy than CKII. Watch some let's play on youtube and see what you prefer.

You would like both.

I prefer Vicky but CK2 with all the dlc is a way more polished game. I hope the new Victoria 2 expansion will give new life to the game.

My advice it to buy both when you have the money.

Vicky 2 is much more...subtle than other games. If You want to "tip the scales" and manage internall policies rather than conquer the world- that's game for You (but only together with AHD- otherwise it's pointless). CK2 is good, but way too easy- You can create huge empire in few dozens of years. Internal mechanics are easy and only Muslim decadence system is a little complicated (or rather- ridiculous).

If you want to be the king (or queen or duchess or count, etc.), working within a feudal system of betrayals and intrigue to gain power, prestige and piety for your dynasty, play CKII.

If you want to be a sort of 19th century "national spirit" trying to help your country "ride the wave" of popular revolt and revolution through the outwardly quiescent but filled with turmoil below the surface 19th and early 20th century, with the best and craziest economic model ever, play Victoria II.

Both are pretty cool, I myself prefer VII.

Crusader Kings II is heavily focused around personal relationships, dynasties, etc. It's a kind of a diplomacy game on its own. Economy and war aren't all that important in Crusader Kings II. I'll give you an example: I was a minor Saxon baron after successful Norman conquest of England. I managed to marry my kin all across the courts of England from baronies to duchies (with the most important ones, my grandsons becoming the Dukes of Lancaster and Northumberland). With some inheritances I was able to become Count and then the Duke of Oxford, and has been apointed as King's Treasurer. Some time after the King's untimely death his under-aged son asked me to become his Regent. I accepted and begun to hatch a plot to seize the crown for myself. I collected as much gold as I could (my own standing forces were rather limited) and set the plot to make me the King of England (I either had a legitimate way to claim the crown of England or I fabricated it). Most of my kin (including children and grandchildren who were one of the two most powerful Dukes in England) and some other Dukes - who were friendly towards me - backed me up when I send a letter to the child-King to handle me the crown. After years of civil war the Alliance of Barons succeeded in setting me on the throne of England. Soon after I started the process of saxonisation of the country, setting Saxons once more on the seats of barons, counts and dukes. It was the best family I've ever had - they really helped me out. It shows how important family ties can be. It's just a single example.

If you're more into economy, diplomacy and politics as such I guess Victoria II can be better choice as what I've seen in the AARs is impressive in all fields you did mention.

either, both are great, but different beasts, it's a hydra vs dragon scenario, nither is cooler then the other, but both dwarf all other!(games)

Victoria II is the best game there is.

It's a really deep game.
The point of CK2 is to play a person, rather than a nation.
With Vicky, instead of people issues you got the world economy to deal with.

I personally prefer dealing with all the complicated industrial issues than silly nobles.

If you're buying from Amazon, get Vicky 2. You can pick up Vicky for $10 and AHD for another $5, meaning you won't miss out on much (until HoD comes out).

95% of the CKII dlcs are junk.
You only want these 3.
Legacy of Rome: Required for retinues a core gameplay change.
Sword of Islam: Only if you want to play muslims. All content is already in base game.
Republic: Only if you want to play a republic. Unless they fixed it you can sorta cheese the game out by playing the vassal count in Pisa. As long as you don't win the election you can play in the republic. If you election you get gameover.

You've got your maths a bit wrong there, feller

Yeah they seem to have fixed being able to play that count aswell. I just tried it since I don't own The Republic and wanted to give it a shot. :(

Anyway, back on topic, I like Vicky 2 more, especially if you can get some buddies to play with you. :)
