Not a great fan of spreading around the budget so everyone gets a little but not all of what they need. But it is historically accurate for Japan. Have a great week off. Your loyal fans will be waiting for the next update.

Its historical for everyone to spread their budget, everyone did it before they actually engaged in a war, and only a few single mindedly favoured a single branch after they did.
I my view, which neither you nor the OP needs to follow, its total gameness(gameyness?) to build only a single branch or mostly a single branch and some planes. Doing so is clearly the most effective in the game, but no one did so historically. And the ultimate expression of this is to build only armour divisions (or para+ATR), no fleet nor air force, until your dominance on your continent is assured.

So to get a real nice AAR that is believable and somewhat realistic, some form of spreading need to happen.

Thanks man, might get out a little diary entry or so, while I am away :)

Quite so, and my main thing is to try to be a bit historical :)

I agree with Surt. You need to balance the appending around the branches. Heck. I even go as far in my games to build up my AAA guns and build forts / coastal forts to the max. I should TFT I guess to build more ground troops but usually build lots of fighter wings. I just don't find 16 or so enough (especially as Germany) with all the industrial bombings going on. Enjoy your vacation Viking.

(A massed rally in Germany, maybe Japan should arrange similar events.)

This one made me chukle :)

We´ll see how it develops. Enjoy your vacation, it´ll be too damn short as always

How's the vacation going? Hope your having fun. Slaving away here apnd patientlybwaiting for an update.

We should give more points to guys like me, who make simple AARs (like I do) but finish than guys like him, who create complicated narrative AARs and then hide under their desk and do like it never happened :p

I seriously think that "simple AARs" have lesser quit rate than "complicated AARs". Prove me I´m wrong, Norwegian! :p

You are probably right, but I find the complicated ones more interesting, even if they are not always finished, will do my best to prove you wrong ;)

Without further blabbering, here is the update:

Diary entry 8, Febryary 25th 1937

Lately I have been preoccupied with organizing training for the units under my control, many of the officers had no idea how hard it could be to cross a river while under fire. This is something which I felt that my soldiers had to master, therefore I have been training them to do just that. Everything has taken on a new urgency since the last conference I attended. War with China seems to be imminent, the Chinese seem to have understood this as well, they have shipped several new divisions to Beijing, just as I hoped they would, if war comes, those men will either be dead or prisoners of war.

In Tokyo there have been several developments. I have been told that the navy has now got newer anti aircraft guns for all their ships, this is being developed even further. The battleships of our navy has got new fire control systems, this will make them far more accurate, it will also assist the army as the ships will be able to give an even better shore bombardment ability. I have also been told that a secret naval construction program has been approved, this will feed the navy with even more ships in the coming years, I have been told that two carriers will be completed in 1937.

The navy has also decided to train their own special marine troops, as of now, 5 divisions have been organized into the 1st SNLF Gundan. These troops are very well trained and they seem extremely motivated to fulfill any order given to them. Unfortunately they have not been placed under my command, but are instead under the command of the head of the navy, Yamamoto. I am sure, however, that if we end up in a war with China, then these troops will see action rather quickly.

(SNLF infantry training with flamethrowers.)

The air force have also developed new single seat fighter designs, as well as developing new and better machine guns for our fighters. As our industry has an order to build about 800 new fighters for the army air force, these new developments will ensure that we will now have quality as well as quantity of aircraft.

As the navy got most of the priorities last year this have been turned around by now. I am also convinced that general Tojo, who has a strong place in politics have managed to persuade many in Tokyo to give the army a higher priority, if this is the case, then I have to be thankful towards Tojo. The army has now got better field medicine, as well as a new and formidable small arm, the type 99. The new weapon is using a new cartridge with is superior to the older one. The design is heavily based on the new German K98 mauser, as the type 99 is shorter than the old type 38. I have tried the new rifle myself and I am highly impressed with its accuracy and rate of fire.

I am also very happy because we are now developing new tank designs, new tracks are being constructed, as well as newer diesel engines. Our industry is also improving their ability to construct armor by using casting techniques. In time I think we will have a strong and modern armored force.

Our industry has managed to improve its production techniques and this has resulted in an economic boost which will make our industry more efficient. One of our firms have also developed a new camera which is up to western standards, it is called Kwanon.

I am also excited for Ishiwara to return, I have called him back again, because I am affraid that war with China might break out soon and because the Nationalists victory in Spain seems to be only a question of time.

General of all Japanese troops in Korea and Manchuria:

Tomoyuki Yamashita

Thank you for the update. nice progression of story and racheting up of expectation for the coming war.

i also agree the quality is better than quantity. I always remember a well written AAR even if it never finished.

Agreed.....nice update and go for quality not quantity.....How in the heck does everyone not realize that the Germans did all they did being constantly outnumbered........until the Russians simply swamped them like 5 or 6 or 8 to one...........
The IJA will need numbers, but I'm sure that one IJA division will be worth like 3 Chinese Militia divisions.........
Looking forward to the next update....and welcome back from vacation......

Definitely, in the battle of the Seelow heights, the Germans were outnumbered 10 to 1 in infantry, and they still held out for three days. I am pretty sure that I have enough divisions for China, especially now that I got those new Marine divisions :)

The update looks good. At last you´ve returned. Stomp ´em! :p

Duh, then I guess I don´t stand a chance

Just found the AAR and loved ir! Nice to see a BI about Japan... And agree with the others comments quality over numberrs!!

The lessons from Spain

Yamashita's HQ, Dalian, Japanese Manchuria - April 30th 1937

*One of Yamashita's generals, Ishiwara, was sent to Spain in the autumn of 1936. Now Yamashita has called him back to tell him the about the new ways of warfare. As Ishiwara enters Yamashita's office, Yamashita is sitting at his desk and sipping to a glass presumably filled with Sake, when Yamashita see's him he smiles and fills another glass with Sake and hands it to Ishiwara.*

Yamashita: It is good to see you again my friend.

Ishiwara: The pleasure is mine Sir. I congratulate you with your promotion Grand marshal.

Yamashita: Thanks you. I am very intrigued with your results in Spain, please, tell me.

Ishiwara: It is clear to me that almost every offensive tactic used during the great war has been abandoned by the Germans, the Italians are still clinging to what they used to do 20 years ago. The Germans no longer use huge artillery bombardments revealing where they are going to attack, usually they perform short rolling barrages and the artillery is later guided to their targets by radios used by the infantry. If their soldiers run into a bunker, artillery or dive bombers can be called in to eliminate the obstacle. The republicans and their Soviet advisors tend to use more suicidal tactics, they still use enormous barrages followed by frontal assaults. The nationalists are able to counter these sort of tactics by having a huge defense in depth and by shifting reserves. If this is not enough, then the Condor legion's aircraft are called in.

Yamashita: I see, it might interest you that we have ourselves developed ways to use artillery barrages in a rolling way and we are working on storm trooper tactics. But, tell me about the equipment used by either sides.

Ishiwara: Well, the hand weapons used by either sides are quite similar. If there are differences they are found in the air, or in either side's tank forces. The Condor legion are using very modern monoplanes, both bombers, fighter and ground support aircraft. The German made Me109 outclasses every other plane yet made, instead of machine guns they are relying on machine cannons which only need a few hits to knock out an enemy plane. The German fighters are also fighting in pairs, one attacks, the other protects the attacker. The German JU87 dive bombers can hit any target with an astonishing accuracy, and the German tactical bombers such as the HE111 pack a huge punch. Like I said, the Nationalist side use the air force in a ground support role, rather than in a strategic sense. The Condor Legion also showed that they can destroy an enormous target with their destruction of a city called Guernica.

(The German Messerschmitt 109 fighter.)

Yamashita: Hmm, I think our own chief of aerial affairs would be interested in talking to you. Let us talk about tanks, please continue.

Ishiwara: Well, the German Panzer I's are not very good at all, they only poses a few machine guns and their armor is very weak, the same can be said for the Italian L3/33 tank. The Soviet made BT5's or T26 tanks are far more potent, they field excellent 45 mm guns and the BT in particular is very fast. The Germans, however, compensate for their inferiority by using their tanks better, all German tanks have radios and they are able to communicate and coordinate their operations. The tanks can also call in aerial support. The Germans have also found that their big anti aircraft guns can be used against tanks, with terrible effect on the opposing size. This is something that I think we should look into. It would allow us to build anti aircraft weapons which could knock out tanks just as easy as normal anti tank guns.

(The German Panzer I.)

Yamashita: I am intrigued by this concept, but I suppose it would be good if I could persuade our high command to give our tanks newer guns and give our infantry men better anti tank weapons. Well, I thank you for this short rap-up report Ishiwara. I suggest that you travel to Tokyo tomorrow to give them a lecture of what you have seen in Spain. I will see you again soon.

*Ishiwara bows and leaves the room.*

Diary entry 9, Mai 1st 1937

Yesterday I had an interesting discussion with Ishiwara, like I expected, surprise, coordination and speed are once again the best way forward. With this in mind I am happy that our scientists have developed newer weapons for this purpose. A new artillery carriage has been designed, as has new range finding equipment which will make it even easier for our artillery men to score hits on the enemy. Our infantry will also be receiving a new mortar, this new weapon has a caliber of 70mm, this has proven to be a more suitable caliber for standard mortar duties. The Germans in Spain has developed their storm trooper tactics from ww1 even further, I have therefore ordered some of our military men to look into this, they are also finishing their conclusions of lessons from ww1.

(The new 70mm mortar.)

To be able to successfully employ complicated storm trooper tactics our infantry has to receive better training, so I have authorized this as well. After a bitter telephone argument with my heads in Tokyo I managed to secure some technicians to develop a new gun for our light tanks, they were not happy about it, but I am sure they will be more convinced after they have spoken to Ishiwara. I also told Ishiwara to press for newer anti tank weapons for our regular infantry, I am sure he will not fail.
Earlier in 1936, General Marshal Kanin pressed for newer designs of defensive positions, this has been developed and we have learned valuable lessons in the art of making camouflaged bunkers and positions.

The navy has gotten a lot of new equipment. They have developed a new fast battleship design as well as bigger and better guns for the battleships. It has also been decided that new carrier armor and hangars will be developed, it will be some time before new carriers with these improvements can be constructed. A new air launched torpedo is being developed, this will benefit both the navy and air force. New and better transport ships have also been developed and are ready for construction. I have also been told that Yamamoto managed to persuade our superiors that they should authorize the construction of two new battleships, the Kii and Tosa will be finished in about two years. Our industry has also become more efficient and three carriers will be finished this year, instead of the two previously though.

(The new Kii-class.)

The new SNLF Gundan which was formed earlier in the year has now been moved to Taiwan, and they will most likely be landed near Shanghai if war breaks out.

Our air force have recently received two new wings of interceptors, these are quite modern and should be up to the standards set by the west. Nevertheless new fuel tanks have been developed for our fighters and there have been advances in dog fighting tactics. A new airframe for our bombers is now being developed by our best researchers.

Our industry has decided to expand the synthetic industry even further, if this is kept up we should be self sufficient in times of crisis. our education system has been modernized and this is being developed even further, our top brains are also looking into the efficiency of our universities. A secret project has been started, where our top scientist are trying to develop rocket testing sites in some secret place in the mountains of Japan. Our diplomats have also concluded another deal with the BIS and supplies have been sold at the normal price.

Super job......I love to look at those puny little PZKW I's....how in the world the Germans thought they would lead their panzer forces I dont know....lucky enough they were just for starters and led to bigger and more potent tanks.....If my memory serves me correctly, once the PZKW I's were obsolete, didnt the Wehrmacht use the chassis for self propelled Artillery units or self propelled AA units?

Looking forward for the hostilities to break out between Japan and China......which leads to a wider war front and more action!!

You are correct, they made a self propelled gun which utilized the chassis, as well as the first tank destroyer built by the Germans, the panzerjäger I. I am looking forward to the war as well now, won't be too long :)

Two excellent updates. You are spoiling us.

Preparation are nearly complete. Now for the pretext.
