The Great Caliph of the Sokoto Caliphate and Sultan of the Sokoto Sultanate Ahmad bin Atiku has heard strange rumors from foreign tradesmen that a distant land called Britain has won an astounding victory over an equally distant land called Russia in a place called Crimea somewhere a long way away. These reports suggest the British as they are called are people to be feared as they according to these rumors managed to kill thousands of these Russians for the loss of a handful of men. They also say that a single unit of cavalry charged the entire Russian force of Cannons and wiped them out for no losses of note. The sources are unclear but it seems quite clear that the British were given some minor aid by a weak pathetic nation called France who lost their entire army 5 times over in the war. We doubt that these rumors are completely true but we have little information to go on to disprove them.

Since our separation from our motherland of Portugal, the Empire of Brazil has continued its march forwards into the future. The many great strides we have made in taming the Amazon interior, in maintaining the unity of our nation through the early rebellions of the early decades, and abroad in safeguarding the sovereignty of our neighbors, all show that we have much to be proud of. We shall continue to move forwards, economically and socially, to maintain this nation of our fathers and let it remain one that not only we, but that all other nations shall look at with envy and pride.

News of the Royal Navy 1861

Two additional Defence class ironclads are to be laid down, to enter service in 1863. The navy will phase out the use of the RBL 7 inch gun in favor of the RML 9 inch gun due to the difficulties with the former.

Four ships of the line are to be shifted from the Channel Fleet to the Mediterranean Fleet.

Given the situation in North America the North America and West Indies Station will be reinforced with four ships of the line and three frigates, including a steam frigate.

Two steam frigates are directed to the China Station to monitor the situation in the Far East.

The Pacific Station is to make preparation for the transfer of command from Valparaíso to Esquimalt.

States of the Church​

The Holy See categorically rejects the statements made by the so-called "Kingdom of Italy" and maintains her position of complete sovereignty. The Papacy is a universal, catholic institution and cannot be subjugated or subordinated to the will of Sardinia or any other state. It is imperative that complete and absolute sovereignty be maintained by the Holy See and the States of the Church in order to fully represent the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church and fully fulfill the duties of the Petrine ministry. Until Sardinia and her Monarch come to their senses it is the feeling of His Holiness that open dialogue cannot yet begin.

In regards to the situation in the American South, the Holy See watches with interest but is not at this time willing to make a statement of support or recognition to either party; beyond a plea for an amicable and Christian brotherhood that should by rights prevail from New York to New Orleans. It is the fervent hope of His Holiness that this issue can be resolved in a peaceful and charitable fashion.

The letters which you have written to the clergy of New Orleans and New York have been communicated to me, and I have read with emotion the deep grief therein expressed for the fears of ruin and devastation caused by a war by the United States against the States and people which have selected me as their President, and your orders to your clergy to exhort the people to peace and charity. I am deeply sensible of the Christian charity which has impelled you to this reiterated appeal to the clergy. It is for this reason that I feel it my duty to express personally, and in the name of the Confederate States, our gratitude for such sentiments of Christian good feeling and love, and to assure Your Holiness that the people, threatened even on their own hearths with the most cruel and devastating possibility of conflict, is desirous now, as it always has been, to see the start of a new peace; that we have ever addressed prayers to Heaven for that issue which Your Holiness now desires; that we desire none of our opposer's possessions, but that we resist merely to resist the oppression that faces us. The Empire of the Great Qing looks upon the nations of Europe with much gratitude, especially the nations of the United Kingdom and France, who has aided us in putting down the most hateful Taiping Rebellion, as our troops begin to cleanup the last pockets of resistance. Our great valor has been displayed in the "Ever Victorious Army," one of the few modernized armies we retain. It has become clear, through the message of the ongoing Rebellion and the Ever Victorious Army, that our nation must become one of the modern world, and welcome the Western Powers and their Influences, to fight against the reactionary forces within our nation, embodied in Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, which has claimed the lives of millions of our people. It is time to become a nation of new ways, and embrace the recently proposed "Self-Strengthening Movement" in the effort that we may once again join the international stage as a World Power.

To ignite the new era of relations with the western nations, we seek new trade and armament treaties with the Great Powers of Europe, in a effort to stabilize Asia and usher in a new era of the Great Qing.
