It's interesting. I'd definitely like a varient with special roles, but I think I'd modify it a bit from the example you linked (I don't really like how there is a role that takes a player out of the game).

Special roles may be a nice way to give the power and variation of the plot cards out without having to have the plot card phase at all (which would be nice, I kinda hate the plot card phase). You can set up roles that create various chains of knowledge, but the overall picture (and truthfulness of people claiming roles) would still be fuzzy.

For example, you could have a role similar to Merlin, say "Childhood Friend" that goes to a resistance member and lets them know the identity of a single spy. How many players will claim to have this role and will out a "spy". :)

A lot to think about here.

I think you're mistaken, Cymsdale.

The Assassin gets one shot at taking out Merlin IF AND ONLY IF the Resistance wins the game. If he succeeds, the Spies win instead.

It's the main reason why I'm not fond of this. You play the game, you stuggle hard for a win and then the other side gets a 1/6 (or better) chance of winning by just guessing.

Ok, well it's still lame.

The review indicates that it's not quite so easy for the baddies to win as one might expect. Obviously, the goodies would have to do a lot of bluffing and subtle moves. If both sides played well, I think it could be a very interesting game.

It's only at the tail end of the game; so it's not like the Merlin role is deprived of any playing or something along those lines. Basically, the baddies get a last chance redemption shot to balance Merlin's knowledge of their identities.

I like the idea of the Spy Lancelot-that's the guy not knowing the other baddies AND the chance to switch sides. It would be an interesting thing to see if having roles would make for a more interesting game than plot cards. If nothing else, no card resolution means a smoother and down to business flow.

I'll probably host one of these in the not too distant future (given sufficient interest), but I think I'd prefer that first time around not use the Excalibur option.

All roles have been sent out, please confirm you have received yours. If you haven't, I have cocked it up and will need to start over :p

Round 1

Gliomarto is the new leader.

Gliomarto has the following cards to distribute:

No Confidence (One time use) The player to whom the Leader passes this card may use this card to reject an approved Mission team (successful Vote). Using this card counts as a failed Vote.

In the Spotlight (One time use) The player to whom the Leader passes this card may use this card to force a player to play their Mission card face up. The player playing this card must declare its use and the target player immediately after Mission Team selection.

For anyone who posts analysis with spy team makeups, here are the official one-character player designations for this game:

G = Gliomarto
C = Cymsdale
L = Cliges
F = Falc
X = Xarkan
K = Capt. Kiwi
D = Doom Lord
T = Tamius

Well not 'official' official, but I figured someone should set up the format. :p

I don't have any suggestions for those cards. Unfortunately, they are not great options to get in the very first round when we have zero information.

I promise that if I get the spotlight card, I'll actually TELL PEOPLE the results when I use it. :p (won't use it on the first mission though, that's a waste)

Okay, role confirmed.

Unless there are better suggestions, I'll distribute those cards randomly.

As good a way as any. They're not the kind of cards we can use in some grand strategy right from the get go.

ItS is played in the open and forces the player it is used on to sabotage/support the mission openly. There isn't any need to tell people what the results are :p

Well, let's get it over with then.
Pass No Confidence to Xarkan.
Pass In the Spotlight to Falc.
Propose team of Gliomarto, Cliges and Capt. Kiwi.

So that there is at least something to discuss.
