Denmark doesn't seem to be aggressive/stubborn enough to be a true world leader. Rich, yes. Large military, yes. Political will to use both, no.

That may be why they've stayed rich and kept their large military. None of the powers who've been getting into big wars seem to have gotten much lasting advantage. Maybe Frankfurt, but they tend to pick on weak people. Same with Hungary, I think.
This would be interesting to analyze.

Honestly I think that their stagnation has weakened them in the world stage. I seriously doubt that they still hold both the largest economy and military like they used to. And if they're so strong, then why do they peace out of every war early?

Meanwhile, Frankfurt & Hungary have only been growing since the start of the game. They've chosen many weak targets, yes, but they've attacked larger powers too (Byzantium, Danzig when they were strong, the HRE, Austria IIRC). Plus there are nations like France, Bohemia, & Etruria that would have been much smaller if they did nothing. Sure, they've all seen better days, but they've held secondary power status for quite a while now.

Remember what happened to another nation that stagnated, Navarra? They didn't have a choice due to their PU, but look where they are now. You can also look at Ming, both in game and in real life.

Sorry about the length of this post, but I just felt like saying a lot this time around. :)

About the UPCA/other colonial states placements: an event will give the cores in the correct location, but then you can get colonial revolters (never seen American ones in a random revolt but all the others yes) that give a core upon successful siege. I've had a mega-South American Haiti revolt away from the AI in a game before, as well as Cuban or African Brazil, Alaskan Louisiana, Mexican Quebec, and so on.

I'm actually surprised that we haven't seen some displaced European nations move their capital overseas. Portugal is a usual candidate in a normal game for me, but its not unusual to spot the Hansa (best I ever saw was a transplanted Hansa that owned all of Canada plus some of northern US) or some other French/German minor.

About Denmark: I think one of the reasons that it seems the Danes aren't feeling like flexing their muscles is that outside of Navarre they haven't exactly had large land borders with an enemy, which may make the AI less willing to go send out troops to fight in alliance wars. Really the only big war that I can recall the Danes being in over the years against a Western power was against Navarre, and they acquitted themselves admirably. The rest of the recent setbacks/noncommittal responses have generally involved overseas possessions and even with that wealth I can't recall the phrase "Danish top flight navy" or something similar having been uttered this game. England is still clearly one of the top flight navies if not the best, Leinster's technological edge notwithstanding (as shown recently, they just couldn't match the English). Etruria has been surprisingly competent at the naval business in my opinion, and its aggressiveness has kept even major setbacks from truly derailing their standing as a major power. The Danes at some point will have to assert themselves or they will find that they slowly decline from being a luminary of the world stage. Especially when Vic2 rolls around, the changes of the Industrial Revolution could turn the Danes' world inside out.

I thought the events that create those cores are supposed to put them in the right place...
Must be some kind of bug, maybe from the conversion. Who knows.
Nope, it always work badly.
I once had Brazil in Africa.

Ah, now seeing post above, explaining everything.

Great job magritte2, like always. Only AAR, which I visits regularly.

On the subject of Denmark: as we shall see in the next global update (which is coming soon), Denmark has slipped quite a bit over the last fifty years. A lot of its wealth has been based on its COT's in Sjaelland and Tangier, so the North African revolt was quite costly for it. The other problem is that the alliance with Frankfurt has not been helpful for it because what happens in these wars is Frankfurt fights one major opponent on one front (Berry, for example) while Denmark ends up fighting all over the place and is stretched rather thin. They lost over a hundred ships in this war.

But who knows what the future will bring? Everybody except Hungary and Frankfurt has had their ups and downs. England looked to be sliding a few decades ago but has recovered.

I missed a few updates , and now there are two mega blobs : Frankfurt and Hungary , and a few american revolters ...

Don't forget the Italian minors! My favourite was when the Pope decided that Rome wasn't big enough and colonized most of the northern coast of South America, before finally moving the Holy See too.

I actually played a game once where not only did the Papacy become a major colonial power but the UPCA revolted against it and had the government type papacy. This was an early version of IN and the bug has probably been fixed by now, but the United Papacy of Central America amused me.

That was a fun and action-filled update. I can only imagine what a global map showing all the blocs during the war would have looked like (not asking for one, just daydreaming).

Ah yes can't forget the Italians, though they usually aren't big in the colonial push. The Italian multi-province countries tend to get in the game and then get smacked around in the later wars. I should note that a LOT of my revolter states end up with a Germanic or Italian primary culture because of these two-bit nobodies.

Nice to see a few more nations in the New World! How far inland does the United Provinces of California go? We can only see the coast on the map.

The 1769 Global Update

Our update surveys the situation during the Great Western War.

The World as of 1769:

As promised I have provided culture maps of Europe and also the Americas. It's clear that culture doesn't change as fast in EU3 as it does in CK2.
