I am having my first game and quote enjoying MotE. I have read the manual but I am still fuzzy about supply. Currently, I am Britain and after a short war with - it seemed like everyone - the world is at peace and Russia and Portugal are in my coalition. I managed to hold Gibraltar as I thought it would be important jumping off spot but I am not so sure now as I can't seem to supply it. I currently have 100,000+ men there and will now withdraw some but even so there appears to be a problem supplying it or am I wrong. Do supply lines trace over the ocean? Thru Portugal? How can I tell how many troops I can supply there? Or, the inverse, how can I tell how much supply a unit needs? I do see that Gibraltar can supply 125...is this the number of men (in thousands) or the number of brigades or...?

Also, when moving armies via my naval transports, the number they are able to transport is the max number of brigades correct?

Regards,
Rick

As I understand things -

1. Gibraltar will be supplied if there are no enemy (i.e. at war with you) ships at sea adjacent to Gibraltar.
2. The number of troops an area supplies is listed in thousands and is part of the province info.
3. If you have more troops than this, you will start suffering attrition (% loss appears with the army)
4. If you are besieged, I don't know if that changes the # of men, someone else might know.
5. The number of men moved by naval transports, this is by brigade (i.e. 1 transport can move 5 brigades)

I haven't tried what you are doing; possibly there is a delay is establishing supply or something else is broken. A bit of experimentation in North Africa usually gives one a good feel for what you can and can't do, especially as the supply limits there are pretty poor.

Also you can stalemate Gibraltar by keeping your ships "blockading" the port of Gibraltar. Since Gibraltar is an island fortress, the only one in the game I believe, they must have a navy blockading the port of Gibraltar in order to assault it. Therefore during any wars with Spain or France you can usually keep it from being taken just by parking a few ships out there in the Sea of Gibraltar. I usually never even keep troops there.

WHOA! That's a big piece of information. My initial 11,000 man garrison gets overwhelmed quite quickly so I have been stationing another 25, 000 troops there. Ok, I will have Nelson take up residence in the Sea of Gibraltar. Thanks! - Rick

You can also reinforce Gibraltar directly from the sea even when under siege.

You can avoid the garrison being overrun by ordering the troops to seek shelter in city/fortress and they will avoid battle and retreat into the Rock. You don't need to keep a fleet stationed off the coast just make sure the enemy never does.
I believe Malta is also an island fortress and the same ruels should apply. There are a few of these special fortress around the map, Sveaborg and Rodos amoungst them.

Don't ask Portugal to join your coalition. You don't want them being at war with Spain as then Spain will invade. You can then use Portugal as a base to raid Spain and occupy their forces and hopefully draw French troops away from other conflict areas. If you encounter too much trouble just cross the border back into Portugal to reorganise resupply and reinforce. Spanish and French forces can't follow you without declaring on Portugal.

Thanks guys! I am beginning to see this game is as deep as HOI3. Thanks much! - Rick
