In the OT section is currently a thread about an insane concept for a great game idea. The idea is to let the player start with a tribe of hunter-gatherers and lead them to the brink of civilization (let`s say a city state like Ur).

Although the concept of the OP is completely crazy (e.g. timespan of 500.000 years with 3 months per turn; 5.000 trading goods; 250 tech trees) I think that the basic idea would be worth a shot and a fresh thing among all the Crisis / WiR games.

So the question is. Would there be a playerbase (let`s say 5 people) for it, even if in the first turns there would be not that much to do besides gathering food or exploring the surroundings, while more actions are unlocked in the course of the game (aka technological progress)?

EDIT:

No, I am not abandoning my Cold War game. This is just a query. :D

Sounds nifty! The concept of players playing as a tribe and eventually civilizing themselves was something I once toyed with, though I got side-tracked with RL events and let the idea go unsaid/unapplied.

I would also be interested, though we already have quite a few games running.

I would be interested in such an idea too.

I am interested in the idea. Count me in.

Sounds simplistic, flawed, and not worth pursuing.

So no.

And we have too many games as is, damnit.

Don't worry about him.

He just doesn't like how many games there are.

Most of the games we have are strategy types or Crisis in the ___ types, so this could be a welcome change of pace.

For inspiration, I'd look to King of Dragon Pass, an old game in which the player makes decisions for a tribe in a fantasy world. http://a-sharp.com/kodp/

Players could be the circle of tribal leaders, with different skills that need to be employed to respond to issues facing the tribe.

A few first ideas.

Title: Dawn of Man III

Now one could ask: why III? Well, the first two iterations were in the OT section. Number one was the creation of three forumites and had a bit feature bloat and was dead after turn one. The second was my creation but too much on the strategic / warfare side. Was not too happy with it either.

Population

Population growth and "classes" should be important. I am thinking about workers (farmers, hunters etc), specialists (craftsmen, scribes etc) and soldiers.

Technology

Technological progress is crucial. Instead of actively researching things, players gain knowledge by the actions they chose. Learning by doing, so to speak. I will look into the tech tree of the Civ games for some inspiration.

Exploration / Expansion

Tribes shall spread with population growth. I am not really sure how to do that. One large hexmap or several provinces (with some of them starting zones for the players). Let`s see.

Other stuff

Mainly features like buildings, strategic resources, warfare and the omnipresent feature axe to assure streamlining.

I'd be down.

is getting interesting i would be down for it

There are some fellow forumites with nice ideas for new RPG and now, that my Cold War game is over, I surely think about something new too. But there are many possible scenarios. A few ideas:

- A few players start with a tribe each and lead it to civilization
- A few players cooperate in a Earth government in a Aurora adaptation
- Another cooperative (or maybe competitive) scenario would be the exploration of the New World
- A duell for two players in the French and Indian War (or a similar scenario)
- A Vietnam Wargame 3 with a more strategic approach, where the players control Battalions instead of Platoons

I can`t make my mind up. :(
