The Price of a Mile
erW5PEJ.jpg

Hello and welcome to the Price of a Mile! I got the idea for the game a little while ago from my previous game but I was not sure about how to implement it or what time period. Thankfully some people helped me and now I am able to start another game once again. The best way I think to describe this game is pretty much a World War One soldier simulator in the Northamptonshire regiment. Who fought from Western Europe and also in the Levant against the Ottomans, so there is a wide variety I think of places where this game could go. A note on historical accuracy though, I am not the best historian of World War One so I will most likely get a thing wrong per update but they may be of design. For example this isn't supposed to be a true to life WW1 simulator and situations and battles could come out extremely different. The Germans may push all the way to Paris and win the war if the rolls go their way which is part of the reason I chose the Mons. The battle was mainly a delaying action but it helped to slow down the Germans. But my point is that it won't go exactly like Real Life and crazy things may happen as well on the other fronts. SO I hope you enjoy the game if you join it and enjoy just reading the thread if you don't from time to time

IRC Channel: #TPOAM

Start Date: The Battle of the Mons, Northamptonshire Regiment

Stats:

The will nominally be like this:

Name:

Role:

Rank: (from Sergeant to private and everything in between)

Current equipment: (like if they're a machine gun operator they may carry ammo belts and a pistol or something like that plus other things they buy)

Combat Efficiency: (their total aptitude for combat and how useful they are)

Experience: (would range from 1-10 with 1 being a raw recruit and 10 being a hardened veteran which would help them survive)

Intelligence: (how good they are at their job especially valuable for medics and operators)

Tactical expertise: (how good they are in special situations, can’t be increased on furlough but by battle)

Strength: (higher chance to survive when defending, can be raised on furlough)

Speed: (higher chance to survive when attacking and can be raised on furlough)

Currency: (how much money they have to buy things when on furlough to buy things privately from a market)

Traits: (a player can chose one to help a stat or just in general but it may come with a downside)

Some of these stats will be modified by the pre-battle phase where it is a furlough or in your trench before battle.

Battle mechanics:
A formula used to determine the overall battle rather than the other individual rolls.

Rolls:
Keep in mind these can be modified by the equipment/skills/what the character is good at.

1-2: Death or MIA (in case of MIA you will be sent a PM detailing where exactly you and and what is happening around you)
3-5: Severely wounded (chance to survive depends on the medics intelligence)
6-8: Minor wounds ( can put the character out of battle except in defense situations and MIA situations)
9-10: Practically unscathed

Ranks:
Each part of the platoon would be divided into sections (optimally 3 of 8)depending on player amount.
Each section would be a Corporal, Lance Corporal, and 6 privates(riflemen). The medic will be attached to the general platoon but will be able to float around and help the other platoons unless the Sergeant orders otherwise for some reason.
Machine Gunners: Separate platoon with 3 machine gun operators, and a machine gunner with the operators being privates and the gunner a Corporal.
Third Section: Led by the sergeant who commands each section with the remaining rifleman and any other special roles.

Medals:
Victoria Cross ( Awarded to exceptional heroic actions)
Distinguished Service Order (exceptional action while fighting the enemy)
Military cross (same as above)
Distinguished Conduct medal (for bravery in action)

If you fulfill one of these requirements you might get one as a result of your actions.

What one of the standard riflemen looked like in 1914

Starting normal equipment: 1 Lee-Enfield Rifle, 10 clips of ammunition (100 rounds +10 in gun), a combat hat (until you get a helmet), a bayonet and 3 days rations in case in the field. Medics would get a basic medical kit with medical supplies and maybe one pistol with 3 clips of ammunition. The sergeant would get a watch, whistle, binoculars, a pistol and 5 clips of ammunition. 1 operator will get a rifle with the same as a rifleman but the other 2 a pistol with 2 clips of ammunition and a maintenance kit for repairing the machine gun and servicing it.

In between Battles:
You can search the battlefield if you won for momentos and special stuff such as German money or something like that but if you roll under a 2 you will be killed by a trap probably. You can also buy/trade stuff that is not required to other players. You will receive a monthly sum of money as well which will be your pay.

How to join:
Just set up your post like this and fill it in

Name:
Role:
Rank: (everyone will be privates except the machine gunner, the medic who is a Lance Corporal, and the sergeant)
Traits: (choose one, be creative!)
Experience: (only the Sergeant at start will have some from previous conflicts)
Equipment: (Don't put everything I put above but just put what your character has with them)
Bio: (no ridiculous people but preferably some that would make a bit of sense still, but if it is quite peculiar and you have written a great bio with great reasons then sure)

The other things like speed and such would be determined by me when looking at your character.

Updates:

There will be a main battle update depicting the whole battle or the whole day depending on how long the battle is. There will also be a personal update for people who are Missing in Action who can be returned or found one way or another, dead or alive.

As for the current post right now more will be added later to explain a lot more if clarification is needed.

Pay Scale:
Privates: 5£
Lance Corporal: 25£
Corporal: 35£
Sergeant: 50£
Machine Gun Operator: 15£
Medic: 5£

He did well in school and enjoyed literature studying the feats of ancient generals late into the night. He left his village for London when he turned 16 trying to find work in a factory to support his family. While working at the factory he learned how to work with a repair machinery a skill which would soon prove useful. In 1913 he joined the army at age 19, he began training. For his attention to detail and ability to follow orders he was made corporal and put in charge of a machine gun platoon. When the great war broke out he was among the first British forces to arrive in France.

Bio: The villages around Corby. Home to great-grandfather, grandfather and father. All farmers. But not Howard. Unlike his brother, he never felt the need to become farmer too and wanted to see something of the world. But with just basic education he could not expect a career and riches. Hence he decided to join the army and found himself in the Northamptonshire Regiment in mid 1913.

By the way you guys don't need to list the standard equipment. Forgot to mention that part about sign ups.

Name: Robert Davison
Role: Private
Traits: high endurance, pragmatic
Experience: None
Equipment: Standard
Bio: The son of a Boer War veteran, Robert, like his father, joined the Army to delay having to work full-time as a longshoreman. He grew up working on the docks, making him a very tough and strong young man of 18. The long hours as a longshoreman, has allowed him to possess high endurance. Although he will obey any order asked of him and would not risk shaming himself, he is still someone who wants to survive the war and is not a soldier who will take unnecessary risks on his own initiative. He just wants to do his duty, survive and come home with honor.

Tomorrow I will be able to put the new guys in and hopefully we can start the game.

Two years late he faced his first combat in the First Opium War, where he displayed great ability and was promoted to Lieutenant. A few years later he took service in Africa, fighting in the 7th Xhosa War. After that he returned to Britain to study further at the Royal Military Academy, which he did up until the start of the Crimean War in 1853. Before it was finished he was transferred to Asia to fight in the Second Opium War. Following the war he was promoted to Captain and assigned to the General Staff. For the next two decades he held a number of staff positions and even taught at the Royal Military Academy. He further achieved the rank of Major in 1876. Finally, he was called upon once again during the First Boer War, which he displayed courage in and was promoted once again to Lieutenant Colonel. As before, spent another two decades in the General Staff and continued his service to the Crown despite his old age. In 1899, now at the age of 79 and a Colonel, he was called forward to serve for a third time against the Qing, once more proving his abilities. When it was completed he was dispatched to South Africa once again to fight in the last year of the Second Boer War. After it, at the age of 82 and with the respectable rank of Brigadier, Royal finally decided to retire. He spent the next decade busying himself with other tasks but when the First World War broke out early in 1914, he immediately re-enlisted and despite his advanced age of 94 he was drafted once more due to his impressive record. Now with the rank of Corporal, he seeks to do his country proud for the last time.

Rank: Private

Traits: Multilingual, Resourceful

Experience: None

Equipment: Silver crucifix, bible

Bio:
