Zombiepocalypse

It all happened on a monday, around noon. The world got turned upside down, and the Dead Walked. Chaos erupted and within hours millions had been turned, since nobody were prepared.

A few escaped the carnage of the first few weeks, seeking refuge outside. You're one of these Survivor Groups.

The Walking Dead - What is and Why

This game is set in the world of Walking Dead. The Walking Dead originally started as a comic book, but has since become an entire franchise, spawning a successful TV show, a computer game, board game, etc.

In the world of the Walking Dead, the world got swarmed by Walkers (zombies, dead-brains, corpses and a multitude of other names), and a few survive in the aftermath. The Walking Dead follows some of these survivors, ordinary people thrown into an extraordinary situation, as they struggle to see tomorrow, becoming more and more hardened as they lose friends and family. There is no light at the end of the tunnel, no helicopter picking you up and bringing you to safety.

The reason for the Walking Dead to be chosen was both because it is easily recognizable, and people can easily figure out that Walkers are slow, durable and plentiful. It's also to underline how players start off as 'normal' people, this is not a fitting game for a battlehardened killing machine (although one could easily have a combat veteran suffering from PTSD or missing limbs).

The game is however set in New England, rather than Georgia, so that there'll be few or no overlaps with the comics/TV show.

Signing Up

Each player creates the Survivor Group of 3 with the following:

Leader Name: What is the name of your leader

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: What was the occuption of your leader, before the zombies came. The GM then assigns what it means. Typically this will be a bonus to one or more rolls, possibly a penalty to other rolls.

Other Survivors (Pre-Outbreak occupations): Who are the other two starting survivors on your team, and what did they do before the zombies came.

Description: Who are your survivors and how did they get together in the initial chaos? This should also include the location at the outbreak.

Example:

Leader Name: Daniel White

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Office Worker

Other Survivors: Natalie White (Nurse), Kevin Dukes (Highschool student)

Description: Daniel and Natalie White is a young married couple, who found eachother united after the outbreak in Boston, but they are still missing their 7 year old daughter Catherine. They met up with high school quarterback Kevin after Kevin and his girlfriend Mary was attacked by Walkers, and Mary was bitten and later turned.

Survivor Group Writeups

Group Name
Leader (Occupation, XP)
Important Survivors (Occupation. XP)
# of Survivors, XP - how many non-special survivors are in your group, survivors are in your group
Base (trait): This is where your group is based. All groups start out in a Mobile or a Small Camp (no bonuses), but can through play find themselves places that are better. Examples: Farm (generate 10 food/turn), Prison (+2 to defensive rolls), Walled City (+1 to defensive rolls, +10 food/turn), etc.

Attributes:
Combat: This is the bonus for combat rolls. It is used for actions and events involving combat.
Scavenge: This is the bonus for scavenge rolls. This is used for finding useful stuff in villages and cities.
Survival: This is the bonus for Survival Rolls. This is used for surviving normal zombie encounters and to do things in the wilderness.

Resources:
There are two types of resources in the game. Perishable Resources are consumed after use, some automatically. Non-Perishable can be used more than once, but can be destroyed.

Non-Perishable:
Weapons: How many weapons do your group have? If you have 0 Weapons (or decide to save ammo) you are assumed to be engaging using melee weapons or fists, giving a -1 to your Combat roll.
Armor: How many in your group can wear armors, giving them additional protection. Armored characters gain +1 on Survival Rolls, but after using an armor they'll lose it on a roll of 1-3.
Vehicles: How many can be transported? Players will either start with a couple of motorbikes, a 4 person car or a van, but may later get more and better vehicles.

Perishable:
Ammo: How much ammo do your survivors have. In combats 1 Ammo is consumed per group member, unless you have no ammo, or specifically states that you're unsing melee weapons.
Food: How much food do your group have? Each member of your group will consume 1 Food each turn.
Medicine: How much medicine do your group have? If being injured or sick, you may need use 1 Medicine per person.
Fuel: How much fuel do your survivors have? If using Vehicles for normal transportation 1 Fuel is consumed per action.

Actions:

Each important character has 1 action per turn. Two or more characters may do the same action. Non-special survivors do not get orders of their own, but may be assigned to follow a special character. In write ups it must be clear what each character is doing, unless they are simply at camp doing nothing. Orders must be sent to per.bialaska(at)gmail.com

Example Orders: Using the team specified in first post

- Daniel White and Natalie White travel to a nearby village in order to scavenge some houses
- Kevin Dukes starts setting up some improvised palisades in order to keep zombies away

These actions can be used for anything, but the GM will normally turn them into a Scavenge, Survival or Combat roll. For instance it is a Survival Roll to scout an area or put up some fortifications, while it is Scavenge to enter a city to find random loot or enter into an area in order to find a specific type of resource.

Before the action result is rolled, a Risk roll is rolled, modified by the area. This can change an ordinary scavenge mission into something far more dangerous.

XP:

Experience Points, shortened to XP, is gained by characters and will allow them to improve. Each time the leader or an important character is involved in a scene they'll each get 1 XP.

Once you reach 5 XP, the number is reset to 0, but the character will gain an additional bonus on their trait, determined by the GM based upon the character's actions.

Each time some of your other survivors are involved in a scene, 1 XP will be added to the survivors total. Once the number for survivors total reach 5, one survivor may be be upgraded to become an important character, gaining a profession, decided by the player.

Rolls, combat and all that rot

If two groups engage in combat, each side rolls 1D6 and adds the groups Combat Attribute. They then compare numbers. Highest rolls get +1 to their Survival roll, while Lowest rolls get -1 to their Survival rolls. Draws gives no bonuses or penalties.

Everyone involved now rolls Survival Rolls on the table below, adding or subtracting the bonuses or penalties gained from the combat result.

Risk Roll
1-2: Bad Stuff. Zombie encounter, Raiders, Car Crash, etc. Make Survival Roll for all Survivors.
3-5: No Event. Nothing happens, do scene normally.
6+: Good Stuff. Something good happens. In some cases it is a +2 bonus on reward roll, but can also be other things.

Reward Roll
Rolled once for each character involved in a successful scene. On a scavenge these numbers double.
1-2: Nothing
3-4: Success. 1D6 random goods or 1D3 specific goods
5+: Great success, 2D6 random goods or 1D6 specific goods

Survival Roll
1-3: Dead
4-5: Escapes unharmed
6+: A Survivor rolling this high negates a Dead result on another Survivor, turning it into a Wounded (out for 1 turn, consumes 1 medicine) result instead

Random Events:

Each turn the GM will roll 1D6. On 1-2 there is an event for a player. On 1-2 it's a bad event (Zombie herd, raiders, etc, causing survival rolls), on 3-4 it's a minor event (nothing that costs lives, mostly meant to be flavor) and on 5-6 it is a good event (arrival of new survivors, finding something of value, etc)

Areas:

The GM will post a map containing the game area, and here each area will be assigned some risks and penalties. Scavenging single houses in the countryside will have few risks, while going into a big city may yield a lot of valuable resources, but your chance of survival is lower.

Examples:
Actions in camp: +1 to Risk Roll. No scavenge possible
Scavenging houses in the countryside: No Random Risk Dice, half scavenge
Village/Suburbs: 1D3-2 (1D6/2 rounded up) Risk roll, giving -1 to +1 to the Risk Roll. Double scavenge result
Entering the big city to get to a mall: 1D6-3 to Risk roll, giving -2 to +4 to roll. Quadruple Scavenge Result, -1 Survival Roll

The Church of the Last Day

Leader Name: Nathanael McCann

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Preacher

Other Survivors: Billy Cross (Ex-Marine), Linda Hernandes (Doctor)

Description: Before the outbreak, Nathanael was just a lowrun preacher from Alabama who spoke about the imminent incoming of God´s judgement and the resurrecion of the dead. He was only followed by some social pariah like Billy Cross, a former Marine who participated in Operation desert Storm before the mental outbreak that got him expelled from the Army.

When the first ones started to rise up, Nathanael knew he was right, and that God´s punishment had already arrived upon the sinners, which greatly increased the faith and loyalty of the few who followed him prior to the outbreak. He is convinced that God himself has tasked him with the mission to select which ones are worth to be saved, and which ones should be turned into the walkers to cleanse their bodies and souls.

As for Linda, well...she was just at the worst place in the worst time, and the only place where she was able to seek refuge was in Nathanael´s church. Now, she is tied with this group of survivors, and although she does not feel quite comfortbale with their view of life (or death, depending from your point of view), she will stick to them as her only chance for survival.

Leader Name: John Locke

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Chief of Wilbraham Fire Dept.

Other Survivors: William Locke (mechanic at Westover air force base), Julianne Carol (Student at Wilbraham Monson Academy)

John Locke chief of the Wilbraham fire department ( town in the suburbs outside Springfield) for nearly a decade when the outbreak started. He along with his fellow respondents did their best to combat the rising sense of panic for several weeks. But when communication began to break down and men began to desert their posts John became increasingly worried. When he was down to his last five men he called his brother William (nicknamed Bill) and convinced him to stay with him at the fire house. Bill had been a mechanic at a nearby air force base servicing civilian planes stationed there. The last member of the current group Julianne (nicknamed Jules) was brought in when she was found wandering the street outside Wilbraham Monson Academy (local private school). Jules was a highschool student there in her senior year looking towards studying abroad with a keen interest in foreign languages. The group was forced to evacuate the fire department when a hoard of the dead threatened to tear it down. Ever sense they have been living in a nearby house on Boston Road.

Leader Name: James Carnac

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Musician

Other Survivors (Pre-Outbreak occupations): Will Hutton (MMA Fighter), Theo Kirkland (car mechanic)

Description: While getting his car fixed at a mechanic's shop in Boston the first attack of the zombies happened. Jim Carnac, keyboardist and electronic musician saw what was coming he and two other men doved in Carnac's car. They managed to escape the city relatively unscaved and has since stopped along the side of the highway to rest.

Leader Name: Logan Berg

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: History Teacher

Other Survivors (Pre-Outbreak occupations): Brandon Barnhill (Park Ranger), Kurt Faust (IT Technician)

Description: An odd bunch, these three fellows were childhood friends, raised in a small rural town in the South. While fairly normal from all conventional perspectives before the dead began to walk, they are model examples of when society unravels. Without social stigmas and the weight of the civilized world upon them, a certain primal sense has been set free, principal among them is the desire for power.

When news of the outbreaks spread, these men met. While they shared their fill of imaginative planning, none of this was supposed to be real, but they had to suffice. Gathering supplies, they departed north, with plans to wait out the storm somewhere snowy and isolated, up in Canada.

This journey evaporated quickly. Their preparation left them leap and bounds over the other poor souls, those who had no time to prepare. Whatever the group needed could be easily stolen. Stealing for survival turned into robbing for sport, as such power, absolute power to decide between life and death was unseen. Characteristics revealed themselves that would be shunned.

Leading the pack was Logan, a scholar of historical study. Throughout his life, he read of strong-willed tyrants and iron dictators, not as inherently evil, just flawed in their execution. He was an autocrat, believing in the tenants of dictatorship and possessing a large distrust for the masses, feeling their opinions misinformed from the intellectual elite. Perhaps he became too intertwined in his studies, admiring the famous, or perhaps the lifestyle of a generally free American spoiled him to the ideals of democracy, taking for the granted its benefits. Nevertheless, he began to lead as a dictator, and was accepted as such.

Kurt was once a technician for a small office building, slaving beneath the whims of his employers, while in his free time tinkering with various appliances. Disliking the humdrum nature of small talk, Kurt was generally a loner, opting to speak with a small few, specifically this group. Indifferent, Kurt's biggest vice is his disregard for others, promoting his own means above others; So what if others must die for his comfort?

The most unchanged would likely be Brandon, a survivalist far before the outbreaks. His ideal day would be far away from prying eyes, where he can live his own life without an authority telling him otherwise. With the dissolution of law and order, this wish became a morbid reality, and now he couldn't be happier. An ardent follower of Berg, he aspires to become the authority he once evaded, through any means.

Leader Name: James Peers

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Massachusetts Congressional Representative, 7th District

Other survivors: Alexander Sharp (Congressman Peers chief of staff, is also deep cover Russian Spy), Jenna Peers (MIT Student)

Description:
Congressman Peers is your typical politician. Power-hungry, charismatic, rich, and great speaker, their was much speculation that he would be running for a high office in the next election, even being mentioned as a possible Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate. A proud member of several important Congressional Sub-Committees, he is quite popular. His relationship with his daughter has become strained with the death of his wife 2 years ago. He was on tour with his daughter when all panic broke loose.

Jenna Peers is a genius, socially awkward girl. Suffering from ADHD and slight Autism, she has had a fairly hard time at life. With a distant father, and an absent minded mother, she has had to make it threw life basically by herself. Of course, she has her fathers money. Showing a great aptitude in computers, she started attending MIT, and was a freshman. Despite an ever-growing void between her father and her, she was persuaded by her father's Chief of Staff to go on the ill-fated tour.

Alexander Sharp is a cunning, and ruthless Chief of Staff. He knows the workings of Washington like the backside of his hand. He knows who wants what, and what they would give for it. He is friends with members of all the important people in Washington, and has several members of the Press in his pocket. He is considered one of the best Congressional Chief-of-Staffs ever. The question everyone asks is, where did he learn to get so good? From the KGB, of course.

Leader Name: Jonathan Bockers

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: American Football Player (More specifically a Free Safety)

Other Survivors (Pre-Outbreak occupations): Brian Dobson (National Guard), Mike Stephano (Former Tanker in the U.S. Army)

Description: On the day of the outbreak Bockers was working out when he heard a knock at the door, expecting some sort of guest during the off season he answered. Opening the door he saw a dead looking thing with blood dripping off its mouth. Quickly sensing danger he grabbed a dumbbell from nearby an hit it multiple times in the head till it seemed to be finally dead. After closing his door and locking it he turned on the television and watched the news. Apparently the dead were walking and knowing that these were the end times Bockers quickly took his guns that he used for hunting with some ammunition and food and water and stuffed them into a duffel bag and went to his car. Driving by he saw two guys on top of a tank. Figuring some time down the line he'd need help he helped them and killed the things with his gun and drove off with them. He of course asked who they were and the one named Brian said he was a National Guard soldier and the one named Mike saying he was expecting to drive the tank but didn't know Brian was in it. After discussing a plan they drove to the outskirts of Boston and went looking for a National Guard base and hopefully other survivors...

The Prince of Thieves

Leader:
Barry McCaulkiner (C-5527 at the MCI-Plymouth)
Profession: Conman

Other Survivors:
Phil McCrevis (C-5488 at MCI-Plymouth)
Profession: “Security Guard”
Anita Hanjaab
Profession: Escort

Description:
This wayward band of misfits, made of two “ex” cons and another would be jailbird, has spent the past few weeks since the beginning of the outbreak burgling houses and stores of Plymouth, and generally trying to avoid other groups doing the same. McCaulkiner, largely the brains of the group, is a tall, painfully thin man, with a mop of reddish hair and a scruffy beard matching; he was arrested for possessing narcotics with intent to sell, plus a whole multitude of other crimes (vandalism, theft, public indecency, etc.) and was sent to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in his hometown. It was here that he met Phil McCrevis, who was under the employ of the Patriarca family when he was arrested; the two quickly became friends and constantly planned their escape from prison. The outbreak proved a perfect opportunity for them, and during the chaos and the subsequent rioting in the prison, the pair escaped and met with McCaulkiner’s girlfriend, Anita, a reputed cokehead and prostitute in the city.

Room for one more?

Leader Name: Wayne Allard
Pre Outbreak Occupation: Veterinarian
Other Survivors: Dennis Barberet(Security Guard) Robert Cook(burglar)
Description: The day of the change Robert Cook was trying the Break into Wanye's office when Dennis caught him just as Dennis was putting Robert under citizens arrest Wayne burst in muttering about the dead walking. A walker then came though the open doorway and caught Dennis by surprise; just as it was about to eat Dennis Robert bash the walkers skull in with a bust of Hippocrates. The three then shook hands as they knew their was safety in numbers, aided the building for medical supply then piled into Dennis's truck and got out of the town towards the coast.

Leader Name: Asuna Hatsune

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: exchange highschooler from japan (pop/rock Idol)

Other Survivors: Roberto Hatekayama (Bodyguard), Marilyn monrose (Doctor)

The two then proceeded to empty out the apartment, gathering supplies that Benjamin missed while stuffing his backpack. Once ready, they started driving in the direction the people were running from in order to get out of the city. While driving, Benjamin got a call from Kay, his friend. Tito and Benjamin went to go pick her up. After that, Tito didn't want to pick up anyone else because it would slow them down. Reluctantly, Ben agreed to Tito's action. Eventually, the three of them made it out of the city.

Leader Name: Michael Stockly

Pre Outbreak Occupation: High School Graduate

Other Survivors: Joseph Sartini (Rookie Cop) Thomas McKeatly (Fencer)

Description: Michael Stockly was a brilliant High School student from Texas. While he was visiting family in Somerville though, the zombie outbreak occurred. The zombies killed most of his family, during which time Michael escaped with his cousins, Joseph Sartini, who had recently joined the police to follow in his fathers footsteps, and Thomas McKeatly who was the best fencer in Vermont. As they escaped, Michael took charge due to his genius and skill with firearms that came from living in Texas. As they escaped through the ruins of the city, Joseph and Thomas were panicked from the devastation and death. However Michael remained unfazed. In any other situation Michael would have become an outcast for his lack of empathy, but here it was a trait of great use. With his refusal to feel for the dead allowed him to make rational decisions that got the three of them to safety, but at the cost of many other hapless civilians. Joseph and Thomas were leery of Michael, but it was clear they would need to work together to survive and Michael was already well adapted to the needed mindset.
