I just tried running under 2.04 but with the two Turkish packs. No problem. I also ran it with the two Turks under the new patch but turned the two Celts off first. That worked as well.

My take on things at this point is that my computer can run about 85% of the DLC at once. So what is needed is some official guidance about what is the equivalent of what, so I can figure out what to turn off.

Of course, that only works if you play on one of the extreme sides of the map. It's easy to turn of Europe if you're playing India (and vice-versa). Playing the Byzantines will be tricky because being in the center of things sooner or later they're in contact with just about everybody.

Somewhere in this thread someone more technically minded than I am mentioned that when it was first fired up the program seemed to want to load everything at once. If that is the case, maybe that really does point towards a possible solution. I would gladly sacrifice a bit of speed in my map scrolling if I could use all the DLC's without having the game crash at loading. But I have a horrible suspicion that I'm advocating a pretty dramatic change in the under-the-hood part of the game's architecture.

A few pages back Groogy said that all of the DLCs and game take about 1.7 Gigs of ram. I haven't seen anything regarding how much they are separately.

I have 16 GB of RAM and still get the Microsoft Visual C++ Runttime Library error and crash, whether I have any/all DLCs selected or not. I tried running with no DLC selected and it still crashed during loading.

I just bought the complete pack of the game plus all DLC the day before yesterday, so I haven't even been able to play the game yet. Trying to run it was after a fresh install and a fresh boot of the system, so other programs running wasn't the issue either.

I also have a 4 GB GeForce GTX 760. Memory should not be an issue for me.

I've been testing a bit. So far the most I've been able to load is all major DLC but RoI (which I don't own), all face packs but the turkish, all units but a handful I don't own, no music.

For now I'll play like this and just enable the music I need for my current game.

To take some load off the start up you could make the music be loaded only once it's going to be used.

Give me a DxDiag Report.

I see, just leaned why CKII stopped working for me... :(
And it seems the current fixes don't work for me either.
2.0.4 works fine, the ROI DLC does not, so...
I hope you manage to do some "magic" Groogy, good luck.
I cant afford to upgrade my system for a while...

hm, ye my CK seems to work only with diabling lotsa Sprites, but still I have played only 1 year into it testwise. Do the memroy requirements increase during the game, because of the extending familys?

Yes; your issue is almost certainly not the one being discussed in this thread.
Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. Zip up your whole Documents/CK2/logs/ directory and attach or link that here too please.

Similar C++ issue. Vista 32 bit. Game will run with most DLC's disabled.

I wonder if there's any benefit for disabling DLC's of cultures/religions you aren't playing as.

Like... do you need the islam DLC if you're playing a christian or indian? Or republic if you're playing feudal?

Obviously the legacy of rome is probably important if you want retinues but other than maybe Old Gods (for the start date?) I think all the others are pretty optional.

I made a thread in the main CK2 forum about this but it didn't gain much traction, basically only LoR, ToG and SoA add stuff other than the ability to play as certain religions or patrician. Because of this same reason, disabling SoI, and the Republic probably won't do much to help with the memory issue as the game doesn't really load anything else if they're active.

The music DLC however does and you won't be hearing say the Songs of Albion if you're not playing in England. Some unit models could also be deactivated without impacting your experience much, if you're going to play in the Middle East you'll probably never see the Celtic units, so I'd disable that.

Here are my DxDiag.txt, my settings.txt, and my logs directory in a zip file. I hope this helps.

DirtyDozen, you are using a 32 bit OS which means you can only utilize about ~3.2 GB or something such. you should definitely look at upgrading to a 64 bit Windows. If you have an OEM installation of Windows 7 then if you are lucky the OEM might have 64 bit in the choices. If you have a disk you'll have to check if it has a 64 bit version as well.

Code:
Available OS Memory: 3224MB RAM

Did this machine come with the OS pre installed?

Thank you, I had forgotten about that limitation. No, this is an old OS I use on this dual-boot machine. I also have 64-bit Windows 8.1, but I use the Windows 7 mostly for gaming until more Steam stuff is compatible with Windows 8.

Maybe I should try playing CKII under Windows 8 and see what happens?

Could you provide a link to that thread or it's title?

The memory usage issue aside, I guess what I'm wondering about is whether by turning one of the expansions off you're turning off more than just graphics. For example, I've never tested this but I was under the impression that if you turned off Sons of Abraham, you wouldn't be able to borrow money from the local jewish moneylender. Not a big deal in and of itself, but if that is the case, are there other features like that woven into the expansions?

If you almost have enough memory to run the game and you have to start shutting things off, it would be better to be certain that you aren't changing any invisible parts of the game when you do it. Turning off music DLC's for nations you have no intention of playing seems a safe and easy bet, but I repeat my comment earlier that what is needed is some official guidance on how to configure your installation so that it uses as little memory as possible. I think what is needed is some kind of grid with a line of nations across the top and DLC's down the side, and the idea would be if you're going to play a dynasty from something along the top row, anything in the column under it with an x can be turned off.

And I don't think that should be done automatically with a program because that would use up more memory, and that's what's in short supply at the moment.

Something tells me having the entire soundtrack of the game in a playlist, running in the background, is more efficient use of your memory than enabling the song DLC.

Then as a bonus you get to hear the whole soundtrack instead of just the same 4 over and over.

I'd test that theory myself but I'm busy going through a backlog of other games while I wait for a hotfix.

Sigh, when I finally got time to check out CyaN's solution I just realized something is seriously wrong with my cpu. Command Prompt doesn't recognize the bcdedit command at all. (and bcdedit.exe is in it's correct place in the System 32 folder).:(
