I don't know if this is pure bad luck from my part but many rulers in the last 3 or 4 games I've played have had daughters first, then no sign of another child for years on end. This doesn't only happen to my character, I've checked other rulers and many had one daughter after 6 years of play.
While I have no problems with the female gender, they tend to make poor rulers with that -10 modifier to vassals' opinion (And honestly, a female despot of Syracuse just doesn't have a ring to it)

So, stroke of bad luck or a bug? What does the LI team have to say?

Bad luck. Gender on birth is hard coded, nothing we could do to affect it. (Well, technically we could do something in an on_birth event, but we haven't. And I think you'd still get the original gender in the birth announcement.)

What about fertility rates? I checked in on the kingly families of Europe and the Severans of Valentia have already died out (Tiberius had only one stillborn son in six years and he was probably slain on some battle) and as I check other courts: every one of them have only one infant and some of those died stillborn, a very few others seemed to be more lucky and had up to 5 children.

In my long game as Augustus of Hispania, I've also had the problem that was myself and my few offsprings' constant chastity. At most I'd have 3 children and they'd have one or two, and one time those one or two died stillborn I quit the game shortly after. It's quite bothersome to spend half the game worrying if your damn kid is finally going to get in the bed with his sweet wife and make her pregnant to ensure the continuity of the dynasty.

I think that the "Trying for child" modifier should give more of a boost. And the "in command" modifier less of a nerf since the first years will be filled with wars against weak neighbours that the AI simply relishes to destroy as slowly as possible (some of these wars take 6 or 8 years to end because of sieges and lack of contribution from battles to the score -- 50% max is not enough --, and these years spent commanding armies are years spent with a -50% modifier to fertility)

Now I'm complaining a lot and offering solutions, but I don't know if they're actually viable so forgive me if these solutions are hard/impossible to implement.

PD: I forgot to mention that some mods have the "take their families along with us" event after taking the enemy's main keep. Giving a huge boost to the warscore thanks to the kidnapped family members. This would be a good way to quickly end wars that are already won
