Chapter 40 (part 1)

[September 10, 2013]

(Sydney, Australia)

The conclusion of the war against the Ottomans saw the Hungarian king, a loyal Catholic, taking steps to fight heretics within his nation. On 1517, Hungary embraced the Counter-Reformation that would both improve its relations with the Papal State and give missionaries more tools to fight heretics. While the missionaries were busy with their battles, the Hungarian king ordered a war against a different heretic. The new conquests in the Crimea region has created a border between Hungary and Ryazan. The people of Ryazan, by following Orthodox, were considered heretics as well and must be purged. The war against Ryazan brought in many Russian nations including Novgorod. The war in Russia raged on for several years before Ryazan was annexed and Novgorod, without motivation to continue the war, agreed to a white peace. In addition to purging heretics, two crusades were declared months before the conclusion of the peace deal between Novgorod and Hungary. Dulkadir was the first target and, to complicate things greatly, Persia and her allies all joined to prolong a war that would have otherwise been a short one. The other crusade was declared on Crimea.

Dulkadir was annexed a month after war was declared but the war with Persia was far from over. Meanwhile, Crimea lasted two months before they lost their independence as well. Those came in aid of Crimea were many but, being divided, were no threat against Hungary. They peace out one by one until Oirat Horde, the war leader of that war, decided to exit to conclude the crusade. Another year would pass before Persia exited as well but they aggression would soon prove to be their undoing as the Hungarian king realized the threat Persia was. In the decades to come, these two powers would clash for control over the Persian region. Two years then passed by without any conflict but, for a growing power like Hungary, peace never last. Iraq and Syria would be the new targets for Hungary. Months later, the Ottomans actually declared a Jihad against Hungary thinking they have a chance. The greatest threat would surface a month later when the nation of Austria declared war. They claimed that Hungary had a province of theirs which was absurd. Still, Hungary had her hands full with her four wars.

With Austria threatening his borders, the Hungarian king wasn't in much of a mood to deal with the Ottomans or the other nobodies in the east. A quick siege would see an Ottoman province ceded to Hungary. Iraq would be the next nation to peace out with a single province handed over. Syria avoided the worst by only losing two provinces. The quick decisive battles in the east quickly concluded the three wars leaving Austria as the only remaining threat. Austria would, however, encounter their own problems. Milan, a nation that has lost to Austria in the past, found an opportunity to retake their territory. To make matters worse, France answered Milan's call to arms. Still, the Hungarian army took the brunt of Austrian attacks and a white peace was enforced. Other than relatively high losses, Hungary came away relatively unscathed. Austria cannot say the same with most of their territories under siege and a large French force heading their way. The Hungarian king, unsatisfied with how his war with Austria went, chose to vent his anger on the Qasim Khanate. The nation followed Orthodox which made them a target for purging of heretics. A month later, the Golden Horde declared war on Hungary.

France would get a small territorial gain against Austria making them one of the strongest nations in Europe (see map below). The Hungarian king had other matters to deal with regarding his two wars. Golden Horde would be the first to peace out where they lost a single province along with renouncing many of their claims over Hungarian provinces. Qasim Khanate would be halved in their territory but they could still remain a threat. However, Hungary needed peace to recover and, for the next two years, it got just that. Nizhny Novgorod, a Muslim nation, would be new target of the Hungary crusades. The small Muslim nation in Russia would be annexed quickly and that crusade was concluded after three years of fighting. The Golden Horde, for their aggression in the previous war, would feel the might of Hungary now that their forces were all focused on the nomad nation. While the war between Hungary and Golden Horde raged on, another war involving Austria and France saw Austria releasing all nations within their territory and cutting them down to a minor power in the HRE. Of course, Nogai declared war on Hungary just for the heck of it.

nwS7AXh.png

The war with Nogai was a short one with the aggressor renouncing claims on many territories under the Golden Horde. As for Golden Horde, three provinces were ceded which led to a four year peace for Hungary. Nizhny Novgorod managed to overtake Qasim Khanate and reestablished their independence but she would soon found herself at war with Hungary. Sibir declared war thinking that Hungary would be too preoccupied but the Hungarian troops stationed in Russia were more than enough. Nizhny Novgorod was annexed once again and Sibir, a poor nation with little to offer, paid up their entire treasury of 11 ducats for peace. The year 1542 saw Hungary declaring her first crusade on Persia. The war would have been somewhat challenging had Hindustan not entered the fight. With the presence of Hindustan, the war against Persia just got a lot more difficult or, at least, that's what Hungarian generals thought at the time. While the war with Persia raged on, Muscowy declared their reconquest war hoping to catch Hungary off guard by fighting on a second front. Repeated defeats for Muscowy and her allies would soon enable the Hungarian king to enforce a white peace. Of course, the Ottomans declared their 2nd Jihad against Hungary thinking that the outcome would be different this time.

The war with the Ottomans would conclude eventually leaving the Muslim nation with only Smyrna, their capital, left. Golden Horde would be at war with Hungary once again only to give up three more provinces. The war between Hungary and Persia, after twelve years of fighting, finally concluded in 1554 with thirteen of Persia's provinces transferred over to Hungary. Hindustan has, apparently, failed to get military access through their neighbor which meant that their soldiers didn't see any action whatsoever. Persia has been weakened but they were still a dangerous threat and the Hungarian king, now ill, felt that successive wars were needed to forever beat down this nation. Hindustan, for joining against Persia, were forced to pay a reparation cost of 1125 ducats which would fill the Hungarian treasury nicely. Several years of peace would ensue before the new Hungarian king ordered two crusades to complete what his father failed to do or, rather, rudely interrupted. Two crusades were declared against Iraq and Syria respectively. Iraq would eventually cede four provinces while Syria two. In 1564, Hungary would resume her crusade against Persia and, this time, Hindustan, not that they mattered, didn't join. Like deja vu, Golden Horde declared a separate war shortly after.

Hmm, if Castille could clean up that Granada and Leon, they could be a counterweight against France, which I presume is the biggest bully on the block right now?

France is definitely the strongest nation right now. There really isn't a nation on continental Europe that could handle them which makes them terrifying. Castille, at one point, had Leon while having Granada as a vassal. However, they lost to France in a war and, in the peace deal, Leon was liberated and Granada's no longer their vassal. So, even if Castille became Spain, they just couldn't handle France.

Golden Horde offered a province on a silver platter which the Hungarian king cannot resist. The new crusade against Persia only lasted 3 years this time seeing Persia parting with five of her provinces. Three years of peace would ensue before war was declared on the Ottomans. What would have been a simple war was ended prematurely when the Ziyyanids, a nobody in North Africa, annexed the Ottomans. The act would have been punished had the Iraqi ruler didn't declare a jihad on Hungary. Then, the Ziyyanids conveniently declared their jihad on Hungary saving Hungarian diplomats an extra trip. Golden Horde, as expected, couldn't resist the urge to join the fun. They would be forced to part with another one of their provinces when Serbia declared war. The Hungarian king forgot that Serbia even existed, let alone seeing this Orthodox nation as a threat. Serbia was forced to annul their treaties as Hungary had more important things to deal with. Ziyyanids were forced to hand over the last province under the Ottomans before Hungary pounced on a newly independent Muslim Georgia with a crusade. Georgia and Iraq would be both annexed within the same year and peace was restored.

The next peace lasted five years before Hungary would declare crusades on Syria, Jalayirids, Qara Koyunlu and Sibir. As usual, these declaration of war result in a web of alliances but no powerful nations joined. Qara Koyunlu would fall first to annexation followed by Sibir. Jalayirids followed the same fate as was Syria. Baluchistan, who entered to aid Sibir, was a major annoyance as they extended the war indefinitely. While that part of the war raged on, the Hungarian king took the initiative and declared war on Golden Horde. With the annexation of the Golden Horde, he and his descendents may actually get some peace and quite for once. Baluchistan was forced to pay a reparation cost of 625 ducats soon after Serbia declared war. Novgorod came to Serbia's aid which provided a new expansion option for Hungary. With many colonies ripe for the taking, Hungarian troops seized the unprotected colonies without hesitation. Serbia, in the end, lost nothing except their alliances. In the next year, Hungarian prisoners colonist were sent to Siberia to suffer start a new and exciting life. In 1588, Iraq broke free from The Mamluk only to be annexed by Hungary that very year.

A year later, Haasa declared a convenient jihad that saw Hungary annexing them. Unfortunately, their jihad also brought Hindustan into the war where, despite the fact that they cannot reach Hungarian territory, they refused to talk at the peace table. To pass the time, the Hungarian king declared war and annexed Oirat Horde who happened to be in the path of Hungarian colonization. Mongol Khanate then declared war bringing in the mighty Chinese superpower, Xia. It was a back and forth engagement seeing a colony trading hands many times. Baluchistan, assuming Hungary was too preoccupied, declared a jihad on Hungary. After the colony trade hands more than a dozen time, a peace was finally established where the Mongol Khanate annul their alliance with Xia and the colony would remain under Hungarian control. No one knew why the colony was so valuable but both sides were sore losers which explained why neither side was giving an inch. Baluchistan's jihad backfired as Hungary obtained four of their provinces with little infamy. The passive war with Hindustan raged on as the Indian nation's ruler refused to accept any fair offers. The Hungarian king decided to play along by spending his free time hunting where he lost one of his heirs.

Daniel and Xue waited by the car when they heard footsteps nearby. Unsure who was there, they hid behind a large boulder while keeping an eye on the entrance. With the moonlight, they made out two people that seemed fatigued.

"Thanks, Jack. Did anyone else make it?" Vilken leaned against the cave wall to support himself.

Hearing some movements, Jack reached for his weapon.

"Jack! It's me."

Jack relaxed when he recognized the voice. He saw Xue approaching him with her hand in the open before noticing Daniel behind her. Vilken, relieved to see his father, managed an awkward laugh.

"You alright, buddy?" Daniel felt relief seeing his friend. He walked up and gave his buddy a hug.

Jack walked towards Xue. "I'm assuming this is all the survivors."

"Ya," Xue responded with sadness in her eyes. "I fear we had a traitor within our midst. There's no other explanation for how quickly they managed to get through our defenses."

"I fear I have to agree with you there." Jack turned around to look at the two young men chatting amongst themselves. He then returned his attention to Xue. "Any ideas what we do next?"

"You take wheel and I'll give directions. We will leave the country illegally, if that's fine with you."

"Any legal route may just get us killed. Where's our destination?"

"My home." Xue said with a smile.

Chapter 40 (part 3)

[September 10, 2013]

(Washington DC, USA)

The President entered his office with the Secretary of State following closely behind him. He sat down rubbing his forehead trying to ward away the headache that was developing.

"Kyle, you better have a good reason calling me up this early. Hell, it's not even two in the morning yet."

Kyle scratched his head and took a deep breath. "Mr. President, I'm afraid we have some trouble with Saudi Arabia."

The President looked up with a puzzled look. "Since when have we got along with Saudi Arabia? The tensions between our two nations have always been complex."

"Let's just say some events took place that will have a huge impact on us."

"I hope they aren't labeling us for some terrorist act. I mean-" The President stopped when he saw the seriousness on Kyle's face. "They cannot do that!" He stood up and walked back and forth in the room. "What did they say this time?"

"Mr. President, please sit back down," Kyle motioned to the chair. "There aren't any accusations at the moment. Still, there was a terrorist threat in Saudi."

The President reluctantly returned to his seat. He took a few deep breaths first. "What is the problem?"

"A group of terrorists blew up the oil field. I fear we are cut off from their oil for awhile until they could repair the derricks."

The restlessness in the President's eyes were gone with fatigue taking its place. He rubbed his forehead again knowing that his headache was there to stay. "I see why you are worried. The shortage of oil is going to throw our economy into chaos."

"What do you think is our best course of action?" Kyle stared at the President with worry in his eyes. "Sitting idly won't make the problem go away."

The President looked at Kyle like he was a crazy man. "In case you weren't aware, I have no experience in these kind of crisis. If you want this solved, I suggest you call the entire crew here."

"I'll get on it right away." Kyle left the office when the President gave him the signal to leave.

The President saw his mug on the table and picked it up before leaving his office.

Jack took the driver's seat with Xue sitting beside him while Daniel and Vilken made their way into the rear passenger seats. Xue gave directions as Jack drove along the quiet highway passing an occasional vehicle. Staying on the cautious side, they drove below the speed limit to avoid getting pulled over by a patrolling officer. Their journey across the highway went without any problems and Xue directed Jack to turn off at an exit that seemed to head towards the coast. Half an hour later, they found themselves at a small port. A large warehouse was nearby with lights suggesting people who were awake. Driving up to the warehouse, Jack noticed a few men shouting at their buddies inside the warehouse to alert them of his party's arrival. He sneaked a look at Xue who didn't seem worried at all.

"What's stopping them from killing us for trespassing?"

"I got it covered," Xue said in a sweet voice. "Just drive up and turn off the ignition. I'll do the talking."

Jack obliged and turned off the ignition once he parked his vehicle beside the warehouse. Before he could make a comment, Xue was out the door and walked towards the group of men that gathered outside the warehouse. The men hooted and whistled but Xue seemed to not notice them. Instead, she started calling a name in Chinese and, shortly after, she was met with a man.

"That man kinda look like Xue, doesn't he?"

Jack merely nodded while keeping his hand on his weapon. Xue and the man talked a short while before Xue kissed the man on the cheek. Jack stared up in the rear view mirror in time to see Daniel's jaw drop. He held back the laugh and watched as Xue returned.

"Let's go," Xue said as she grabbed her bag. When she noticed none of the men moved, she asked: "What's wrong?"

"I think you broke a few hearts back there." Jack smiled and pointed his thumb behind him.

"Don't be silly, boys." Xue smiled as she swung her bag onto her shoulder. "That guy was my brother." She made her way to the warehouse entrance as Jack made his way out the vehicle.

Jack looked through the window to see Daniel and Vilken finally grabbing their backpacks and making their way to the doors. He scanned at the warehouse once again but the men that gathered earlier already returned inside. Making a quick check that his weapon was loaded, he walked around the vehicle heading to the entrance with Daniel and Vilken close behind him.

Chapter 40 (part 4)

[September 10, 2013]

(Somewhere in California, USA)

Entering the warehouse, Jack noticed the interior was poorly lit. A shadow revealed that there was someone making his way to the roof to perform lookout. The other men were gathering around a table playing cards with several light focusing on their position. There were chips and beer bottles on the table but no sign of drugs were seen. Jack took in the surroundings and found no one a threat to them. Whoever Xue's brother was, he seemed to call all the shots in the warehouse. The men playing cards didn't even pay attention to the trio that just entered. Surprisingly, they weren't even checking out Xue who was climbing the stairs to the second level. It took Jack a moment to notice that Xue's brother was standing by the stairs watching over his men. One could only guess what would happen if someone stared at Xue for a second or two and get caught by her brother. Jack was less tense after scanning around but he kept his hand on his weapon. Daniel and Vilken were quiet since leaving the vehicle and followed close behind. The trio made their way up the stairs where they were greeted by Xue's brother. To Jack's surprise, the man extended his hand to Jack. Jack shook hands with the stranger and, from the handshake, knew that the man was a confident man not to be underestimated.

"I appreciate you looking out for my sister," the man said to Jack in fluent English. "My name is Bing and I'm the owner of this warehouse." He turned around and pointed towards a door a few meters away from them. "There are beds in that room. Please get some rest and you three, along with my sister, will be heading out in the morning." Bing left the trio without another word and headed what appeared to be his office.

Jack took the lead and walked over to the door he was pointing at. Looking through the door, he saw a clean, white room with two bunk beds occupying opposite ends of the room. A switch on the wall controlled the light bulb in the ceiling. Otherwise, there weren't anything else worth mentioning. Jack walked over to one of the bunk beds and tested to see the strength. Convinced that the bed would support him, he laid down and turned his head to see Daniel and Vilken standing in the middle.

"Get some rest, you'll need it." Jack would close his eyes with his hand still in contact with his weapon.

Daniel and Vilken stared at each other and, without a word, Daniel took the bottom bunk while Vilken took the top one. Lying on the bed, Vilken felt his back complaining against the flat, hard surface. He looked across the room only to see Jack already asleep. He repositioned himself to look below his bunk but Daniel's eyes were closed as well. Defeated, he laid back and closed his eyes. With the adrenaline already ran its course, Vilken, with fatigue quickly settling in, fell asleep as well. While the trio slept, a person stood at the doorway looking in without alerting any of them. The person smiled and walked away silently.

The President entered the kitchen with his mug. He was relieved to see that someone remembered to make coffee this early in the day. As he filled his mug, the President heard someone at the doorway. He turned around half expecting to see the Secretary of State but, instead, was greeted by the Secretary of Defense.

"Mr. President, I'm glad you are up and awake already."

"Avery, I'm up but I'm still not fully awake." The President turned towards his mug which was filled. He took a sip and enjoyed the coffee greatly. "You don't have good news either, right?"

"No, Mr. President. The Russians are being a big problem right now." Avery stood at the doorway trying not to look at the coffee. "We need to deal with them Reds before they become out of control."

The President chuckled. "Times have changed, Avery. They are no longer the Reds anyway. Be relieved that the Soviet Union is gone." Avery's serious expression stopped the President from having a good laugh. "What's your suggestion then?"

"Nuke them."

Chapter 40 (part 5)

[September 10, 2013]

(Somewhere in California, USA)

Jack woke to someone's scream. He sat up immediately and headed to the doorway where he stared outside. With the dim light, he was able to make out the silhouettes of the members of the warehouse crew who were making their way to the entrance. Jack interpreted the next few shots coming from assault weapons and quickly called to Vilken and Daniel. The two young men were woken by the scream earlier as well but the gunshots had them wide awake. Jack turned his attention back to the main level when he noticed a man climbing out the window opposite the entrance. He spat on the ground in disgust of the man's cowardice when he suddenly noticed the device held by the man. Even at the distance with little lighting, he could recognized that what the man held in his hand was a combat-net radio. Before he could figure out the meaning, he saw Xue and her brother running towards them. Bing motioned everyone to follow him when a few explosions shook the warehouse. The group headed towards the water when an explosion split them up. Bing, Daniel and Vilken were left on one side of the platform while Xue, with Jack on top of her, were stuck on the other side.

Jack told the other three to go ahead as he will make sure Xue remain safe. The trio, especially Bing, was reluctant to leave them but further gunshots persuaded them otherwise. Jack and Xue had to retrace their steps to the stairs as they dashed down. Jack caught sight of the last surviving member of the warehouse crew, while wounded, still shot back at the armed soldiers and keeping them temporarily at bay. Jack commended the man for his bravery and knew his priority was to get Xue to safety. He looked back quickly when he reached to bottom of the stairs to see Xue close behind him. He then let Xue take the lead as she knew the layout of the warehouse better. Xue's face wasn't hiding the fact that she was terrified but Jack admired that she stayed calm the whole time. She moved at a steady pace while moving through the doorways until they arrived outside. A few gunshots that narrowly missed them both told them that a few soldiers managed to flank around. Relying solely on instinct, Jack drew his weapon and opened fire on the approaching soldiers. The unsuspecting soldiers were soon just corpses as the shots found their target.

Xue got past the initial shock and motioned Jack to follow her. They entered the bushes that sprouted up beside the road providing them with cover as they made their way to the boat. Xue was so confident that they were safe that she didn't notice a sniper preparing to take a shot from the warehouse roof. Jack, having experienced many actual combat in the past, had a sixth sense that made him look towards the roof. The sniper was preparing to press down on the trigger and, without thinking, Jack pounced on Xue. Xue could barely react when she saw a projectile hit Jack square in his body. Jack quickly shifted his weight so Xue could get up. Xue was about to say something but something in Jack's eyes made her stop.

"Listen carefully ... get to the boat ... and live ... Keep an eye ... on the man ... wearing a cap ... he is a ... traitor ... Now go!"

Xue felt tears in her eyes but she nodded. She dashed quickly while keeping herself low to avoid fire. A few quick shots from behind her told her that Jack took a few shots at the sniper. She assumed that the sniper was likely hit because she wasn't shot at as she made her way to the boat. At the boat, Bing, Daniel and Vilken were already waiting with their weapons drawn. Bing caught sight of Xue first and jumped out the boat without thinking. Instead of embracing her, he guided his sister with his body between Xue and the warehouse. The siblings made it to the boat without trouble and Xue told Bing to move. Daniel and Vilken were about to stop Bing when Xue turned towards them.

"Jack is dead!"

The shock hit Daniel and Vilken so hard that they stared back with puzzlement. Bing has already turned on the ignition and began driving the boat. His last man, wearing a cap, stood on the dock to untie all the rope before jumping in himself. He sat in the corner where he stared back at the now burning warehouse. Daniel and Vilken, having recovered from the initial shock, went to their own corners to absorb what has transpired. Xue went over to Bing and told him that she would take over the wheel. When Bing questioned her why, she quietly told her brother to keep a close eye on his last man. Bing nodded and went into the cabin where he hid under a window facing the corner the man was sitting at. He waited a few minutes before he heard the man talking into his radio.

"... The man they call Jack is dead. I will transfer the coordinates of the boat once I get the chance. I-"

The man stopped dead in his tracks as he stared down the barrel of Bing's gun. Before he could raise his hand in a futile attempt to protect himself, Bing let loose three shots. As Bing lowered his weapon, the man was already dead and dropped his radio. Daniel and Vilken, hearing the gunshots, rushed over to see the corpse leaning against the rail. They stared at the window where Bing was still holding his weapon pointing downwards. Bing then exited the cabin and dumped both the man and the radio overboard.

"Traitor." Bing made his way back to the front.

Bing couldn't help but smile back as his sister smiled one of her beautiful smiles that he hasn't seen for a long time. He retook the wheel and Xue, still grieving for Jack's death, headed into the cabin to weep. Daniel and Vilken, still numb from the events that just unfolded, leaned against the rails as they watched the beautiful sunrise in the east.

Not good for the rest of the world if they start nuking each other? Or not good for Jack. Both, probably.

Chapter 40 (part 6)

[September 10, 2013]

(Washington DC, USA)

The President stared at Avery for another half a minute before he burst out laughing. "Avery, we cannot nuke everyone we don't like. That's like shooting anybody that looked you funny."

Avery stood there with the serious expression remaining. He waited until the President finished laughing before proceeding. "I'm quite serious, Mr. President. Only nukes can eliminate the Russians for good. We are just fortunate that they are less resilient than cockroaches."

The President suddenly turned serious as well. "Listen carefully, Avery. Nukes aren't toys! They are serious business. Get the idea through your thick head that, unless we have no other option, no nukes will fly while I'm around. You hear me!"

Avery backed a few steps from the President's outburst. He nodded which the President took as the conclusion to their little conversation. The President filled up his mug again and motioned Avery to follow him. The two men made their way down several stairs before they arrived before an underground strategy room. Inside, a group of men were already seated and chatted amongst themselves. Seeing the President enter, they stood up to greet the President before returning to their seats. The Secretary of Defense made his way to the seat between General Johnson and Ambassador Moore. Also in the room was Kyle Hall and the undersecretary of States, Victor King. The President took his time to get seated and finished his mug of coffee before getting to business.

"Now, I know we have a series of bad news. First, let's deal with this Middle East crisis."

"I prefer to call it an oil crisis, Mr President," said the Secretary of State as he opened one of his folders. "The Arabians require time to get their derricks back on track. The brief shortage in oil will hit our economy hard as it's still recovering from recession. Weathering through this crisis will take time and resources and, if we aren't careful, we might plunge into a depression."

"Sounds like just what we need. Right, Kyle?" Hall chose to not answer as he flipped through a few more pages pretending to not hear the question. "We'll let Kyle deal with his crisis since he's the most certified in economics. What other business do we have?" The President scanned the room until Johnson spoke up.

"The Russians have gotten bold as they situated their soldiers along the Ukrainian border. An invasion seems inevitable despite the embargoes and warnings."

"Those damn Reds!" said Avery Brown. "I knew nothing short of nukes would change their mind." He looked around the room but no one seemed to be agreeing with his proposal.

Johnson turned towards Brown and shook his head. "The last Cold War didn't end that long ago. Let's not start another one."

"You're a pussy. A general that hesitates is a general that will get all his men killed."

"I guess there's a reason why you're no longer a general." Johnson watched with satisfaction as Brown seemed close to letting loose his temper.

The President watched the drama unfold and decided, a short while later, to defuse the situation. "Alright, you two. Break it up. In case you weren't aware, you two are adults. So you better act like one." Johnson turned back to his files while Brown took a few deep breaths to calm himself. Neither men wanted to make a fool of himself.

"About the Russians," started Moore, "we have depleted all diplomatic options. We either declare war or let them go ahead. I would prefer the latter since we lose a lot less."

"I would agree with the ambassador," said Johnson. "We might lose some face but it's better than a third world war."

"Cowards," muttered Brown but everyone chose to ignore that remark.

The President looked around the room and was relieved to see an agreement with topic related to Russians. American and Russian diplomacy was always shaky at best of times and their confirmed invasion of Ukraine only made the situation more perilous. "With the Russians out of the way, what else do we have?"

"The Japanese." Everyone turned their attention to King who paid no attention to the stares as he was focus on a document in his hand.

Chapter 40 (part 7)

Background

The Han dynasty was thrown into chaos following the death of Emperor Ling in 189 AD. The emperor's death resulted in a power struggle between He Jin and the ten eunuchs. He Jin was the elder half-brother of the Empress He and, before his quick ascension to General-in-Chief due to the Empress' influence, he was a butcher. The ten eunuchs, conversely, wielded strong power by excelling in the game of diplomacy within the courts. The power struggle between the two sides would eventually result in the death of both sides with a man called Dong Zhuo taking over. Zhuo was a cruel man whose tyranny would soon terrorize all those in the capital, Luoyang. There were a few brave souls who tried to assassinate him but, since Zhuo's acquisition of a powerful warrior called Lu Bu, all the attempts have failed miserably. The crimes of Zhuo didn't go unnoticed by the other warlords in China and, in 190 AD, a coalition of warlords launched a campaign against Zhuo hoping to free the emperor from his control. The coalition would prove to be a failure as the warlords, instead of working together against Zhuo, often held back to preserve their own strength. Still, the coalition did win a few small victories that would force Zhuo to change the capital from Luoyang to Chang'an. During the "evacuation" of civilians from the city, Zhuo ordered his soldiers to loot, rob and raze the city to the ground before herding civilians to Chang'an. Not long after, the coalition was disbanded as the warlords began to turn on each other for power.

Arriving in Chang'an, Zhuo would enjoy peace while the other warlords turned against each other. However, he was still a cruel man and anyone that opposed him would suffer horrific torture and deaths. A small band of officials within the court began to plot another assassination against Zhuo and, learning from the mistakes of those that failed before them, managed to get Lu Bu on their side. The relations between Bu and Zhuo was strained which became the most obvious over a single woman. The officials then lured Zhuo out of the safety of his estate by sending a false document suggesting that the Emperor wished to transfer his crown to Zhuo. Zhuo, who was as ambitious as he was cruel, went to the court without any suspicions. During this journey, Bu led a small group of soldiers to ambush and executed Zhuo. The death should have restored the peace for the nation but Zhuo's loyalist continued the struggle against Bu. Eventually Zhuo's loyalists came out victorious and Bu was forced to abandon the capital. The loyalists then took control of the Emperor and began strengthening their power base within the capital. Soon, the loyalist were split into two groups as they became divided. One group was led by Li Jue while the other one was led by Guo Si. Their internal conflict would soon erupt into a series of skirmishes within the capital. Their struggles would throw the capital into chaos and, as their struggle continued, a much lesser known event was about to take place near Chang'an.

I opened my eyes and did a stretch. I stared around and saw a dozen or so soldiers still sleeping in the small mud hut. I took care not to wake them as I made my way out of the hut. The sun has risen but a thin film of smog was in the air. Standing in an abandoned village, I pondered on what to do next. Our little group has managed to desert Li Jue's army but we found ourselves in the middle of nowhere. The constant skirmishes has made it perilous to travel in the day as one may meet robbers or other deserters. At night, we had to face with wildlife that saw us as the main course. Either way, our chances of survival were slim. I looked behind me and was relieved that none of them were woken up by me. I began to make my way to nearby huts hoping to scavenge for anything that was edible. An hour later, I returned empty-handed. The other soldiers have woken up by now and they were chatting quietly amongst themselves. We may have escaped together but we still didn't know each other. Friends stuck together and I just happened to be alone. My two brothers have died a year ago and I have lost contact with my family a long time ago. Standing at the doorway, I somehow got the attention of the other soldiers. I explained that we needed to work together to find food and received a few approving nods. Still, we were not out of the woods yet.

Chapter 40 (part 8)

[February 10, 193]

(Outskirts of Chang'an, Han)

We decided to split up our group to cover more ground. The ideal situation seemed to be splitting into two groups of six where we can cover twice the ground while still ensuring some strength in numbers. Unknowingly, my group selected me as the leader. Not sure what exactly suggested I would be a leader but I chose to accept the honor, if you can call it that. My group headed to the northern direction to trek along the small trail. We stuck near the trees so that, once we heard anything, we could quickly conceal ourselves. I took the lead as a proper leader would but I still kept my eyes and ears open for anything. A few clouds have moved in and provided us a little shade. Still unconvinced that we were heading in the right direction, I looked around for anything that could be used as an excuse to cut our trip short. It was not meant that way as we heard some screams further down the road. The screams were coming from men but I made out a few women screaming as well. I wasn't sure what I intended to do but I wanted to check it out. My group actually followed me and I assumed it was their curiosity that got the better of them.

We moved quickly down the road and I was the first to peer around a tree. Three soldiers have just beheaded two young men and they were moving towards the small group of civilians. An old men was standing between the soldiers and three young woman. The old man was shaking from fear and raised his arms in a futile act to block the swords. Two of the women were frozen in fear staring at the two heads while a third woman seemed ready to resist with a dagger gripped tightly in her hand. The three soldiers laughed at the old man trying to bar their way. One of them actually sheathed his sword and delivered a kick that sent the poor man flying. He was about to direct another kick at the old man when suddenly I found myself, sword held high as a roar of outrage carried me across the clearing. The soldier closest to me turned too late as I already delivered a quick slash resulting in blood gushing out his neck. Awkwardly, I lost balance after the slash and collided right into the second guy. As the two of us were falling, I saw the woman with the dagger charge forward and stabbed her weapon into the gut of the third guy. I was so amazed that I forgot that there was still a soldier underneath me. The soldier managed to shove me off and looked around for the sword he dropped. I discovered that my sword was in my hand and, without thinking, slashed at the man's knee. The man collapsed and gripped his knee in pain. He looked up just in time to see the old man bring down a rock hitting him square in the face. I didn't know if the man was dead or not but, if I were him, death would seem more preferable.

I turned around only to see the other five soldiers stare at me with awe. Then, I noticed a shadow over me and turned to see the brave woman standing before me. She offered me her hand and, when I grabbed it, she pulled me up with surprising strength. She thanked me for the help and introduced herself as Ye before tending to the old man. I returned to my group where everyone stood behind the tree as though the fight wasn't over yet. As I was about to give orders to leave, the woman called for me. I turned around to see them walking towards us. I was puzzled at first but she eventually explained that they wished to travel with us. I would have refused had the members in my group didn't rudely interrupt me by agreeing. They have apparently taken fancy of the women by trying to impress them with stories they have no doubt made up. They would have continued their shameful display had shouts not erupt just over the hill. I grabbed Ye's hand without thinking before giving orders to my group that we should leave immediately. One of the soldiers helped the old man like a proper youth while the other four protected the flanks of the other two women. I would have lectured them on their priorities had I not chose to protect a woman as well. We moved as quickly as we could away from the fight and stopped to take a rest once we were far enough.

When I felt my hand getting pulled, I only just realized that I grabbed Ye's hand. Releasing my hand quickly, I turned to scout out the road ahead. A few laughs came from the soldiers as I pulled away from them. Once I was sure the coast was clear, I signaled to my group to follow. Return to the abandoned village seemed to be our priority. We didn't find any food but the other group might have had more luck. When we were close to the abandoned village, I wasn't looking and slid down an incline into a ditch. I was about to help myself up when I noticed a boot beside me. Turning slowly, a corpse entered my line of sight. It didn't take long before I realized that the corpse was one of the soldiers in the other group. Fearing the worst, I whispered to my group to get low and come into the ditch. They must have heard my urgency because they didn't hesitate to follow my order. One of the soldier caught sight of the corpse and fell on his butt. Everyone saw the corpse next and they looked terrified. I told everyone to stay quiet while I scout ahead. Ye held me in place, kissed me on the cheek and wished me luck before letting me go. The other soldiers must have either not noticed or they were too terrified as they didn't laugh like earlier. I took a deep breath and began my ascend up the slope towards the abandoned village. I stopped to listen but heard nothing except for the wind. I let out my breath and closed my distance quickly to the closest building to me.

Well you delivered on your promise. I'm going to sit here quietly, pretending to know what's going on and wait for developments. :)

Just give me one more update before it gets slightly more clear. I'm afraid the significance won't come much later.

Chapter 40 (part 9)

[February 10, 193]

(Outskirts of Chang'an, Han)

Hiding behind the building, I listened carefully for anything suggesting I wasn't alone. The seconds dragged on but I heard nothing. I dashed from one hut to another and was relieved to see no one inside the village. As I was exiting on the other side of the village, I heard some voices and quickly got on my belly. I debated whether or not to check things out but decided against it. There was little cover up ahead and being spotted could mean the death of me. Instead, I hid inside the nearest building while catching bits and pieces of the conversation. I didn't hear much but I did get the hint that these men were searching for something. There was nothing in their conversation indicating their profession but my gut feeling was that they excelled in combat. The voices became distant as time passed by and I noticed that I was holding my breath the whole time. I let out my breath as I left my hiding spot heading the other way to rejoin my party. I still remained cautious while I made my way through the village, fearing one or two of those men may have entered the village when I was too preoccupied with the conversation. The coast was clear and I joined up with my party in a few minutes. Ye was so relieved to see me that she embraced me before I could say anything. With her body pressed against mine, I found it difficult to say anything and chose to, instead, say nothing. The other soldiers were snickering but I was too occupied to notice. We then headed into the village and took a rest in one of the huts.

Few hours later, we headed out to look for food. We needed to return before dark or the wolves may get us. A short discussion took place before the search and we decided that I, along with Ye and a soldier called Cui, would venture out to look for food. The remaining four soldiers would protect the old man and the two other women. I was hesitate to leave the soldiers behind but Ye assured me that my "friends" were honorable men. In the end, we went through with the plan with me leading the party of three in the northwest direction. I hoped that we could avoid those dangerous men by not going to the south and the other two agreed with me. We crept quietly along the trail taking in everything in our surroundings. Except for the forests that stretched for miles, we didn't find anything resembling food. Truth be said, we would eat the tree bark if we were desperate enough but I would prefer any other alternatives. Ye suggested that we climb a hill to get a better view of our surroundings. There were enough vegetation to keep us conceal while we take a good look around. I smiled at the wonderful suggestion by Yet and we began our ascent up the hill. We stayed near vegetation and we soon arrived at an elevation giving us a nice view. This was the first time I had a look at my home and I must admit it was beautiful. Ye took a few steps forward and suddenly disappeared before our eyes. I didn't believe it and walked up until I stood before a hole. I couldn't see the bottom of the hole because it was simply too dark.

"Ye! Ye!" I shouted down the hole hoping to get a response. "Ye! Ye!"

Vilken shook Daniel until he finally woke the young man up. Daniel looked around confused until he finally focused on Vilken.

"What's the matter?" Daniel realized that he must have dozed off and sat up with some difficulty.

"What nightmare did you have?" Vilken looked down with worry as Xue walked up beside him.

"Is everything alright?" asked Xue. "You were calling a name that sounded like Ye."

"Ye?" Daniel tried to think back to his dream but he could no longer recall anything. "I had a dream but I don't remember any of it."

"You had a long night with little sleep," said Xue as she helped Daniel up.

She led Daniel to the cabin and told him to get more sleep. Once Daniel laid down on the bed, Xue closed the door behind her and joined Bing.

"Well?" Xue asked.

"From his pronunciation," Bing said, "I believe he was saying leaf in Chinese."

"Odd, isn't it?"

"Might be an omen. You can never know."

"Good or bad?"

"Time will tell."

"The Japanese," continued King, "have demanded more support in the form of weapons. They believe the tension between them and China is reaching a critical point and an armed conflict is inevitable. They are going through a series of changes in the process to rearm and create a standing army. Their actions haven't been taken well by the North Koreans or the Chinese. The Chinese government have denounced the Japanese for their warlike actions. This is a sticky problem that must be dealt with."

"Those goddamn Chinese are no different from those Russians. Why didn't we eliminate them while they were still weak?" Avery looked around but received no reaction from the others.

"I fear more weapons to the Japanese," said Moore, "would create more problems. After all, how can we be sure we can control Japan if they become a dominant Asian power? Our constant support of them has made them bold and they would no doubt dismantle China if given a chance. There won't be any counterbalances in Asia once that happens."

"Are you saying that we just abandon Japan to the Communists?" challenged Avery.

Moore paused a short while to think over his response. "In case you weren't aware, Japan has one of the strongest navies in the world. Their military is top notch as well. It shouldn't even be a surprise if they could take on China single-handedly without our support. I'm just saying they don't need any of our 'aids'."

The President decided to step in. "Now, both of you have a point. We cannot abandon the Japanese if war does break out but we don't want them to be the next China. I think we will provide them some shipment of weapons on the condition that they will avoid conflict at all times. It probably makes sense that, the moment conflicts break out there, World War 3 would commence. I personally don't want to see that happen. Understood?" Everyone in the room nodded. "Truth be told, I would rather not antagonize Japan. They might be a smaller nation but they have venom in their bites. Avery, I think I should remind you that nuking China at the moment isn't an option. If the situation escalates, I may consider it so you shouldn't even bother mentioning it now. Understood?" Everyone turned their attention to Avery who looked down at his lap muttering something. "Are there anything else?"

"A terrorist organization in the Middle East has recently gathered much support. They have declared a Jihad on us so we must prepare for possible attacks. Our intelligence reported that their first target is the White House."

I would have kept calling her name had Cui not wrestle me to the ground. The impact from the collision with the ground knocked my breath out. I was about to yell at him when he pointed downwards to the base of the hill. I took a look through the bushes and noticed a group of soldiers walking towards the hill. I risked poking my head slightly further to notice that they were heading towards a hole cut out from the hill. I quietly backed up until the vegetation concealed me completely. What happened next send shivers down my spine. I heard two men talking and their voices resembled those I heard near the abandoned village. Piecing together that they were killers and they were heading to where Ye has fallen into, I began to panic thinking that Ye has no chance of survival. Suddenly, I felt Cui's hand on my shoulder and the act calmed me down slightly.

"I know how you feel about her," he whispered. "We will save her."

I couldn't help but smile at this man. It seemed like he has known me for a long time. Still, I know he was trying to comfort me. Once the voices below us disappeared, Cui, unexpectedly, made his way down the hill with me in pursuit. I actually thought he was joking but he appeared to be serious. We kept ourselves above the opening where the soldiers least expected us to appear. We moved quietly and soon noticed two men standing guard just inside the opening. They sat down and chatted between themselves unaware of our approach. We did our best closing in on them before leaping forward with our weapons drawn. Neither of them managed to get a sound out before our daggers find their mark. We helped the corpses down to avoid any sounds and made our way into the dark tunnel. We dared not light a torch fearing it would give our position away. Instead, we had one hand against the wall as we progressed forward into the darkness.

"White House?" Avery exclaimed. "Those trash actually think they can mount an attack here? It's absurd. We-"

"We still cannot overlook this threat." Moore interrupted Avery and avoided his glare. "We must be ready for anything they throw at us."

"In this case, I have to agree with the Secretary of Defense." King waited for a pause to add his opinion. "Those fanatics might have free reign in the Middle East but they couldn't get their hands on weapons and explosives here in American soil without appearing on our radar."

"Do these terrorist have access to chemical and biological weapons?" asked the President.

In response to the question, everyone in the room went silent. Adding chemical and biological weapons to the mix definitely upped the stakes. The President stared around the room scanning everyone's faces. He allowed the silence to stretch on for a minute.

"Well, it seems like we have no easy solutions to this." The President turned to the Secretary of State. "Kyle, bolster the security at the White House. Don't give those terrorist an opportunity."

Kyle nodded and wrote down some notes onto his notepad. The President looked around the room and asked if any other topics needed discussion. When he was greeted with further silence, he dismissed everyone and rubbed his forehead. The President waited until everyone left the room before swerving his chair towards the world map on the wall. He stared at it for a few minutes and began weeping.

I walked into the darkness with Cui behind me. We weren't sure what awaited us up ahead but I had only a single goal in my mind: rescue Ye from the soldiers. As we made our way through the passageway, I noted the walls were smooth and seemed to be man made. As we progressed further, I was getting the impression that we were entering a possible tomb. There has been stories of large tombs built in these regions but most people, including me, took them for myths. Assuming I was correct about this being a tomb, then chances were we would encounter traps soon. People said that traps were set up in the tombs to deter grave robbers. We weren't planning to rob the graves but, sadly, the traps don't know that. I wanted desperately to speak with Cui on this matter but I feared any whispers we made would be amplified in the narrow passageway and alert the soldiers. Thus, we remained silence the whole way down the seemingly endless passageway.

We had no idea how long we have been traversing in the darkness which has severely hindered our ability to estimate time. Suddenly, we heard several screams up ahead. I froze in place and felt Cui stopping behind me. We knelt down trying to make ourselves small and waited. Half expecting the soldiers to come our way, I drew my weapon. Cui must have sensed my fear because I heard him unsheathing his dagger. We waited in the darkness for the soldiers to come but we heard no footsteps. As time passed, I got a bit more bold and slowly crept forward. I wasn't sure what I would find up ahead but waiting in the darkness was making me very nervous and vulnerable. I feel sweat soaking my shirt only just noticing the heat in the passageway. Putting the discomfort in the back of my head, I crept forward with my hand against the wall. Several minutes later, or so I assumed, we arrived at a doorway leading into a chamber. I noticed some light coming from the ceiling. I poked my head into the chamber to scan around. Initially, my eyes were still adjusting to the light. After a while, I, with my eyes adjusted, nearly threw up from seeing the scene before me. There were five corpses in the chamber that explained the screams we heard earlier. I backed up into the dark passageway to calm my nerves while Cui took a look into the chamber. Short while later, he joined me in the darkness as I hear him vomiting nearby. We then sat in the darkness for a minute or so trying to work up the courage to move forward.

I allowed my heart to calm down before taking a careful look into the chamber. With the dim light, I looked around and scanned the five corpses. Three were impaled by spikes coming out from the ground while the remaining two had multiple arrows sticking out from their bodies. To my relief, Ye wasn't among them suggesting that she may have escaped the trapped chamber altogether. Then, I realized that seven men entered the passageway and only five corpses were accounted for. The two people unaccounted for just happened to be the two men I feared the most. Almost without think, I dashed across the chamber to get to the other side. Cui called to me but I ignored him as I focused on sprinting across in a straight line. When I reached the other side, I was surprised to see myself unharmed without triggering any traps. I stared across at Cui who stared back with puzzlement. He called to me to carry on while he stayed back to hold off anyone else. I didn't blame him for his lack of courage to get through the trapped chamber. It was purely dumb luck that I managed to escape it unscathed.

I kept moving forward through the darkness unsure what would greet me up ahead. I stopped occasionally to listen to footsteps but I heard none. I moved blindly through the darkness until I found myself before another chamber. While hiding in the shadows, I poked my head out and took a quick look. I missed it the first time assuming that several statues were positioned in the room but a second scan had me recognizing the two "statues" as the two men that were missing. They were impaled by spikes like three of their friends and I even pitied them for their death. I only hoped that they were spared the pain. Knowing that the two men were there, I scanned the room carefully for Ye but found nothing. I wasn't sure if I should have been relieved or worried. Ye was either alive or she fell into a trap that would hide her corpse for all eternity. While I was pondering about my next move, I caught sight of a torch in the distance. I risked shouting Ye's name hoping to get a response. The torch stopped in the distance and I was getting a bad feeling. Slowly, the torch approached me and, when it was close enough, I caught sight of Ye's face from its light. Ye smiled back at me and greeted me with joy. I nearly ran at her when she told me to stop. She gave me specific instructions on how to get past the traps and I eventually joined her.

We embraced for what seemed like eternity. I asked her if she was alright and she stated that, other than a few bruises from the fall, she was fine. I asked her how she knew the traps so well with her explaining that her father had stories of these trap chambers. Ye thought her father made up the stories but the tomb they were in confirmed the opposite. Ye was looking for the exit when she found a several gold jewelry in a small hidden chamber. I took a quick look and didn't have to be an expert to know the jewelry would make us rich. I told Ye to keep it hidden and lead the way. The torch did help fend away the spirits that seemed to haunt the inner sanctum of this tomb. After a few dead ends and close calls, we found the exit. When we exited the tomb, the moon has already risen and a wolf howl in the distance reminded me of the dangers at night in the wilderness. I unsheathed my weapon as we made our way to the entrance of the tomb to reunite with Cui. I called into the darkness and, minutes later, he walked out with a grin on his face. He was crying as he believed that we would never see each other again. The three of us, after the very emotional reunion, made our way to the abandoned village where we would tell our incredible tale and show the treasure we discovered. We found no food but our future seemed a tab more brighter with the gold jewelry.

Sam was having a nap on the plane when Jason woke up him.

"Are we there already?" asked Sam as he tried to get his bearing.

"No, I just have some important information about the man we are looking for."

Sam sat up rubbing his eyes. "You woke me up for that? You could've fill me in when we get there." Sam didn't keep his grumpiness out of his voice.

Jason smiled apologetically. "I'm afraid this is important."

"Go ahead then." Sam suppressed a yawn.

"Around the time Matthew met Jason on the internet, he sent out an email to an address. A day later, someone accessed the address and forwarded the content to Matthew's brother. The content, from what I gathered so far, seems to be a saved file. This might be the key we need to solve the puzzle."

And so the old file enters the arena again, and Asia is still a big freaking mess.

Yup, the file will play a major part in deciding how things will unfold.
Soon, I'm afraid Asia will look nice and neat compared to some other places.

Chapter 41 (part 1)

[September 11, 2013]

(Sydney, Australia)

Sam couldn't help but suppress a yawn. He slept on the plane but it did little to help with his jet lag. He stood outside a classroom with Jason and a man called Justin. Justin was a friend of Sam who worked for the ASIS and just happened to be off that day. When Justin heard about what has transpired in Canada and USA, he agreed to give a hand in the matters. Justin soon found Matthew's brother, Mathias, who was apparently still teaching at University of Sydney as a professor of history. He then drove the three of them to the campus and arrived outside the classroom where Mathias was teaching a class. Luckily, they only needed to wait a few minutes before Mathias dismissed his class. The students exited the class quickly as they rushed to their next class with a few lingering around to ask the professor a few questions. The trio waited patiently until all the students left before approaching Mathias. Mathias was busy packing up his laptop and teaching material when he noticed three men before him. He looked up with puzzlement.

"I don't think you three are my students."

"Your assumption is correct, professor Luffman," said Justin. "Though, I might consider attending one of your courses in the near future."

"I don't think that's why you gentlemen are here right now," Mathias said with a passive face. "And please call me Mathias."

"Mathias," said Sam. "I fear I'm from the RCMP and bring bad news about your brother."

"Matthew? He wouldn't hurt a fly. Please tell me there isn't an accusation that he murdered someone."

Sam shook his head. "I'm afraid he was on the receiving end. Two bullets through his heart."

Mathias backed up with shock. "No, it can't be. Why would anyone want to harm him?"

"That's what I'm hoping you can help me with." Sam scanned Mathias' face and realized that the man was actually shocked by the news.

"There must be a reason you came here, right?"

Jason explained about him searching all possible leads and discovered a save file that was sent to an email. Mathias immediately realized what they were talking about and explained that he gave the wrong email to his brother and mistakenly provided the email of a friend. When asked about his friend, Mathias stated that, a day after the email arrived, his friend had a stroke and passed away. It was almost a week later that he accessed his friend's email and discovered the email that was meant for him. Thus, he forwarded it to himself and that was that. Mathias revealed that he never opened the email since he forwarded it and probably would have forgotten about it had Jason not remind him. Jason requested access to the save file and Mathias just happened to be done with his teachings for the day. Thus, he invited the three men to his home where he could open the save file. Mathias pointed out that the save file required the game itself and the associated mod. Before he could explain further, Sam tactfully interrupted and convinced Mathias that time was of the essence. An hour later, the four men were inside Mathias' study with Mathias opening his game.
