Chapter 40 (part 1)

The conclusion of the war against the Ottomans saw the Hungarian king, a loyal Catholic, taking steps to fight heretics within his nation. On 1517, Hungary embraced the Counter-Reformation that would both improve its relations with the Papal State and give missionaries more tools to fight heretics. While the missionaries were busy with their battles, the Hungarian king ordered a war against a different heretic. The new conquests in the Crimea region has created a border between Hungary and Ryazan. The people of Ryazan, by following Orthodox, were considered heretics as well and must be purged. The war against Ryazan brought in many Russian nations including Novgorod. The war in Russia raged on for several years before Ryazan was annexed and Novgorod, without motivation to continue the war, agreed to a white peace. In addition to purging heretics, two crusades were declared months before the conclusion of the peace deal between Novgorod and Hungary. Dulkadir was the first target and, to complicate things greatly, Persia and her allies all joined to prolong a war that would have otherwise been a short one. The other crusade was declared on Crimea.
Dulkadir was annexed a month after war was declared but the war with Persia was far from over. Meanwhile, Crimea lasted two months before they lost their independence as well. Those came in aid of Crimea were many but, being divided, were no threat against Hungary. They peace out one by one until Oirat Horde, the war leader of that war, decided to exit to conclude the crusade. Another year would pass before Persia exited as well but they aggression would soon prove to be their undoing as the Hungarian king realized the threat Persia was. In the decades to come, these two powers would clash for control over the Persian region. Two years then passed by without any conflict but, for a growing power like Hungary, peace never last. Iraq and Syria would be the new targets for Hungary. Months later, the Ottomans actually declared a Jihad against Hungary thinking they have a chance. The greatest threat would surface a month later when the nation of Austria declared war. They claimed that Hungary had a province of theirs which was absurd. Still, Hungary had her hands full with her four wars.
With Austria threatening his borders, the Hungarian king wasn't in much of a mood to deal with the Ottomans or the other nobodies in the east. A quick siege would see an Ottoman province ceded to Hungary. Iraq would be the next nation to peace out with a single province handed over. Syria avoided the worst by only losing two provinces. The quick decisive battles in the east quickly concluded the three wars leaving Austria as the only remaining threat. Austria would, however, encounter their own problems. Milan, a nation that has lost to Austria in the past, found an opportunity to retake their territory. To make matters worse, France answered Milan's call to arms. Still, the Hungarian army took the brunt of Austrian attacks and a white peace was enforced. Other than relatively high losses, Hungary came away relatively unscathed. Austria cannot say the same with most of their territories under siege and a large French force heading their way. The Hungarian king, unsatisfied with how his war with Austria went, chose to vent his anger on the Qasim Khanate. The nation followed Orthodox which made them a target for purging of heretics. A month later, the Golden Horde declared war on Hungary.
France would get a small territorial gain against Austria making them one of the strongest nations in Europe (see map below). The Hungarian king had other matters to deal with regarding his two wars. Golden Horde would be the first to peace out where they lost a single province along with renouncing many of their claims over Hungarian provinces. Qasim Khanate would be halved in their territory but they could still remain a threat. However, Hungary needed peace to recover and, for the next two years, it got just that. Nizhny Novgorod, a Muslim nation, would be new target of the Hungary crusades. The small Muslim nation in Russia would be annexed quickly and that crusade was concluded after three years of fighting. The Golden Horde, for their aggression in the previous war, would feel the might of Hungary now that their forces were all focused on the nomad nation. While the war between Hungary and Golden Horde raged on, another war involving Austria and France saw Austria releasing all nations within their territory and cutting them down to a minor power in the HRE. Of course, Nogai declared war on Hungary just for the heck of it.
The war with Nogai was a short one with the aggressor renouncing claims on many territories under the Golden Horde. As for Golden Horde, three provinces were ceded which led to a four year peace for Hungary. Nizhny Novgorod managed to overtake Qasim Khanate and reestablished their independence but she would soon found herself at war with Hungary. Sibir declared war thinking that Hungary would be too preoccupied but the Hungarian troops stationed in Russia were more than enough. Nizhny Novgorod was annexed once again and Sibir, a poor nation with little to offer, paid up their entire treasury of 11 ducats for peace. The year 1542 saw Hungary declaring her first crusade on Persia. The war would have been somewhat challenging had Hindustan not entered the fight. With the presence of Hindustan, the war against Persia just got a lot more difficult or, at least, that's what Hungarian generals thought at the time. While the war with Persia raged on, Muscowy declared their reconquest war hoping to catch Hungary off guard by fighting on a second front. Repeated defeats for Muscowy and her allies would soon enable the Hungarian king to enforce a white peace. Of course, the Ottomans declared their 2nd Jihad against Hungary thinking that the outcome would be different this time.
The war with the Ottomans would conclude eventually leaving the Muslim nation with only Smyrna, their capital, left. Golden Horde would be at war with Hungary once again only to give up three more provinces. The war between Hungary and Persia, after twelve years of fighting, finally concluded in 1554 with thirteen of Persia's provinces transferred over to Hungary. Hindustan has, apparently, failed to get military access through their neighbor which meant that their soldiers didn't see any action whatsoever. Persia has been weakened but they were still a dangerous threat and the Hungarian king, now ill, felt that successive wars were needed to forever beat down this nation. Hindustan, for joining against Persia, were forced to pay a reparation cost of 1125 ducats which would fill the Hungarian treasury nicely. Several years of peace would ensue before the new Hungarian king ordered two crusades to complete what his father failed to do or, rather, rudely interrupted. Two crusades were declared against Iraq and Syria respectively. Iraq would eventually cede four provinces while Syria two. In 1564, Hungary would resume her crusade against Persia and, this time, Hindustan, not that they mattered, didn't join. Like deja vu, Golden Horde declared a separate war shortly after.
