Dace Blanc- A French AAR

I have been wanted to do an AAR for awhile now but couldn't decide on a game or country. I finally have chosen HOI3 and France! I will do a journal style AAR. My first post is just back story to set everything up. I made up my own general to command the French army and that will help justify the modernization of the army. I will be playing on medium difficulty. I hope you enjoy!

France went through some rough times in the early 1930s. The Great Depression continued to crippled the French economy. Thousands were still without work. Strikes became more and more prevalent throughout France. The people were demanding the government to do something. Fascist and Communist groups promised to fixed the economy and started to become popular enough to have a chance in elections. Many people became scared of a revolution. The French government continued to do little to help its people.

Later in the decade, scandals rocked the government. The first was in 1934. The Paris-Soir reported that several of the president’s minister were planning to have members of the communist party murdered. They of course denied it but there was too much evidence. In order to try and appease the French people, the President, Albert Lebrun fired the ministers. A few months later Albert was intoxicated while taking an evening walk in Paris with some other officials in government. There was a group of laid off factory workers standing around a fire nearby that noticed the President. They started shouting many nasty slurs at him. The President laughed and the group made fun of the factory workers. The factory workers became enraged and started to charge the President. The President’s bodyguards quickly came and beat the factory workers. The next day’s headlines weren’t pretty. The people called for his resignation. The President refused but promised to make it up to the people. He said he planned to introduce large tax cuts across the board and introduce an unemployment system to help relieve the French people. He still hadn’t introduced any of that by the end of 1935. People were becoming restless and then disaster struck. November 15, 1935, the press unveiled a mass embezzling scheme ran by many top officials in government. It included people from many different parties. Albert acted fast. He fired everyone he could and the ones he couldn’t he forced to resign. He managed to find replacements rather quickly for all the positions but Chief of Army. He was in no rush for that. The Soviet Union was building a large military and he needed to appoint someone
capable to lead France to victory in an eventual war. Albert was strongly anti-communist. France and Great Britain at the time were letting Germany rearm a little so incase of any Soviet aggression they could have a buffer to help fight the communists. Albert canceled the rest of the Maginot Line because he planned on just sending troops into Germany to fight the Soviets. Besides, worst case scenario, Belgium would be an excellence defensive position.

December 31, 1935, Albert and several other members of government were attending a New Year’s party. After a few drinks Alberts started to talk a little too much. He got into conversation with Barque Ferdinand, a prominent journalist. Barque started to ask Albert about the last open position he has yet to fill. After a few minutes Albert started to joking throw out names and a few other officials noticed. Soon there was a small group all jokingly throwing out names of rather unknown major generals. Dace Blanc’s name was thrown out there and it caught Albert’s attention. He stopped everyone and claimed Dace was his man! He had the most backwards military ideas of everyone else. He was the worst candidate so why not choose him? The others agreed. The journalist laughed and jokingly said he already has the biggest news for the new year. The next day it was published. Albert was shocked. He had to play it cool though because if the public found out what really happened it would be the end of his career. He held an emergency meeting with his closest political allies. They were freaking out over what happened. How could such a no name be appointed to such an important position? He told them the story. They were shocked but agreed to go along with it. Danc came from a middle class family. He joined the military when he turned 18 to be able to help support his family. His family struggled due to be off in the late 1920s. Dace fought in several minor skirmishes in colonial territory. That is where he learned the usefulness of armor units. He developed a strategy in his head on how to fight a war with many armor units and aircraft to support him. He managed to climb up all the way to Major general. He commanded one of the few motorized divisions in the French army until he got promoted to Chief of Army. The men he commanded loved him for his ideas on how to conduct warfare. His strategy greatly cut down on the cost of men by encircling the enemy. His ideas were unproven on a large scaled though. Albert hoped that he could simply use Dace as a puppet and just hope he quits. Albert couldn’t afford another failure. France was already on the edge.

This looks interesting! You have some time to prepare against the Germans but not much. I hope you aren't going anything gamey like attack Germany preemptively.

I am not going to do anything gamey. So no extending the Maginot line or attacking any countries before a German dow.

One of my all time favorite HOI experiences was running the "Polish Gambit" as France and ultimately capturing Berlin :D. Never gotten it to work in Hoi3 though lol. Best of luck! :D

well conquering half the world is gamey , but doing nothing until sept 1939 isn't that exciting ... i'll wee how you fare!

January 1 1936 - September 1 1939

January 1 1936

I have decided to start this journal as part of a new year's resolution. I need a way to sort out my thoughts. My parents recently died in an attack by communist terrorists while working at a large factory in the outskirts of Paris. I was very close to them. No longer do I have them to help guide me. I am on my own in the world now. A world that is very unforgiving.

January 7 1936

I can't believe what has happened. I manage to get promoted to the position of chief of army. I thought it was some kind of cruel joke when I got the news. I was rushed from Algeria to Paris. The President was there to greet me. He congratulated on the promotion. We sat down in his office where we went through all the details of what I needed to do. I made sure to tell him my ideas for reforming the military but he didn't seem interested. "Ya go play with your armored toys just don't mess with the infantry troops." I was thrown back a little but I am new so I just assumed how the President was.

February 6 1936

Germany sent troops into the Rhineland yesterday! The world was shocked. It was known Germany was rearming but nobody realized just how fast. I met with the president later in the day and asked for an increase in the number of tanks and start producing tank destroyers. The President said he would get back to me. Hopefully Germany stays neutral with the west. The Soviet Union is too large of a threat to take on alone. Great Britain and France will need Germany’s help.

February 16 1936

The President agreed to my order. He said it will help out the economy and also introduced a few new labor laws. He needed to gain popularity for the upcoming election, too, so I lucked out there. He told me to go “run off”. He doesn't like the idea of a lightning fast war. He believes in a static defense. I never got to experience The Great War but I understand why the rest of the French people are stuck in their ways. I feel as though the best defense is a good offense. I will restructure the army to suit that style of warfare. France does not have the numbers to fight an enemy like the Soviets toe to toe. We will need large encirclements which requires fast troops.

May 28 1936

I have been very busy the past few months. I went touring around the country inspecting all functions of the army. I have plans to reorganize the army but lack the equipment to implement it yet. Fortunately, I have already started on the new armor corps. It will contain 5 fast and powerful divisions. I can use these to punch through enemy lines and then encircle. Albert Lebrun won the election by a very small margin. He promised more reforms to the economy and also to build up more of the military to defend France from the evil Fascist and Communist governments of Europe. It will provide more people with jobs to produce the material and I might finally get the resources I need to reform the infantry divisions.

June 16 1936

There was an assassination attempt on June 3rd. At first nobody knew who was behind it but a few days later it was found out that a member of the communist party was responsible. Those damn communists!

August 27 1936

Today a civil war broke out it Spain. Franco and his nationalist rebels went up in arms against the government. This worries me. France doesn’t need any more fascists on her doorstep. There is no way France has enough men to cover 3 fronts and protect her colonies. I have designed some infantry divisions that hopefully will help solve that problem. I will only have 2 brigades of infantry while also including a brigade of heavy artillery and anti-tank weapons. We will need to maximize our firepower to save lives and cover so many fronts. I won’t be able to implement it yet. I need to finish the armor corps and convince the President that my plan will work.

January 18 1937

I have finally finished reorganizing the armor units. I have 7 divisions that consist of a medium tank brigade, 2 motorized infantry brigades and tank destroyers. This should allow us to defeat any unit we come across. I have met with the president on my proposed changes to our infantry divisions. He liked the idea of adding the heavy artillery but didn’t see the need to add anti-tank units to every division. I told him that the future of warfare would be conducted by armored divisions encircling slow infantry and that the infantry needed equipment to deal with this threat. He laughed at my idea of armored units actually being useful. Hopefully I can convince him in the future. I just need evidence.

May 30 1937

May 11th the Nationalists won in Spain. That is just another potential enemy on France’s border. I used that and some information from spies. French spies had discovered that Germany was building a large amount of armored units! Germany has been slowly becoming more and more of a threat so we need to make sure we can counter them. I went and told the President this. He pondered for a moment and agreed to order a large amount of anti-tank guns. He then told me to go back to work because he had “important adult government business. I am treated like such a child but I can finally reorganize the infantry units! The President has become more and more open to change though. I hope in the future I will be able to have more free reign to make decisions. A divided France is an enemy’s greatest wish.

January 10 1938

Japan has signed a pact allying with Germany! The French government is getting worried. Everyday Germany is getting stronger. The President’s popularity is growing though. The country’s national unity is going up steadily. By ordering so much military equipment it has opened up jobs and spurred economic growth. The depression is in full force still but there are signs of hope.

March 10 1938

Germany has annexed Austria! The French government today was is caos trying to decide what to do. They ultimately decided to do nothing. The French army is not yet reorganized. There is no chance we win a war yet.

HMPBiyp.png

September 10 1938

A few days ago Japan and China signed a treaty ending the war between the two nations. Japan received the entire Chinese coast line. Japan is growing powerful just like Germany. Japan can threaten our Pacific holdings. A few British war ministers and I met later in the day to discuss how to deal with the Axis powers. It was agreed upon that France with minor assistance from Britain would fight Germany while Britain would face the brunt of Japan. Of course France would offer part of her navy and some land troops stationed in the Pacific to Britain. When I got back the President was impressed. He didn’t think that Britain would send any troops to France in the event of a German attack. I guess I am starting to prove my worth he said at the end of our chat. The chat was cut short when we got word that Germany demanded the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia. Panic rained throughout the government. Today the Prime Minister from Britain came back with an agreement with Hitler. Germany promised not to take any more land in exchange for the Sudetenland. Cheers rose throughout the Western world. We will have peace in our time.

March 6 1939

Germany invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia a month or so ago. The Western powers met and agreed that anymore demands by Hitler would be met with stiff resistance. Today he announced his desire to acquire Danzig from Poland. Great Britain and France kept to their agreement and Great Britain guaranteed the independence of Poland. Later in the day Italy annexed Albania. The fascists of the world are asking for another Great War.

April 29 1939

I have been ramping up the efforts to reorganize the army. If Germany declares war on Poland France needs to be ready. Italy and Hungary have recently joined the Axis powers. We will need everything we have to stop them.

August 9 1939

Germany and the Soviet Union announced today the signing of a nonaggression pact between the two nations. I thought they were enemies? It doesn’t matter now. I rushed to the President and asked to mobilize the army. He had a grim look on his face. For once I actually think you are right.

September 1 1939

Germany declared war on Poland...

G0AVs6f.png

Sorry lack of pictures. Nothing really exciting happens peace. The following updates will have lots of pictures and go in more detail now that the war has started. I am open to any suggestions as this is my first AAR and still figuring out the best way to do things.

Well, the good part is about to happen. Time to get some popcorn ready :).As for the best way to do things, I'd suggest checking other people's AARs and try some things for yourself. It's really hard for others to decide your best way since everyone is unique in their styles. Generally, there isn't a wrong way to write an AAR since you are the author. Just keep going and, if you encountered a small problem, simply ask. People in the forum was pretty nice at giving feedback.

The picture amount is fine with me, especially since it's the first years of the game, where one is just building up. The fun part, with more to show, is about to start.
One idea is to show the size of your army, even just by front would be good since it gives an idea of the odds. Other than that, I think you'r doing just fine, keep at it!

I agree with blklizard and sebas. First and foremost, it is your AAR and you should feel free to show us, the audience, with whatever you think is right and could be entertaining/ informative. Just to give you an idea, I started out with not finishing 2 AAR's in 2013 (I think it was) and started to write more seriously last year. And now I have started my 4th 'real' AAR and I see my own development, purely based on experience and by using suggestions made by others I feel comfortable with. Other suggestions I keep in mind for other times or I choose not to use them. Other then that, keep it up!

To sum up: I'm subbed! :D

I also agree ^

The only thing I might say is that you don't want to rush things - don't cover a year of war in a single update. Of course your update up there was fine to quickly skim over as indeed nothing happens. But now that war's begun I do suggest to cover small periods of time in your update :)

And I'd probably recommend updating once a day at the most - it becomes too time-consuming.

Anyway, good luck in your AAR. I'll definitely follow it.

I have a lot of free time lately and I just plan on updating when an update is done with. Which will probably be posted Friday. I am enjoying this more than I thought but also realizing just how much work AARs are. Hopefully I can actually achieve all my goals in the campaign though. I do hint a little about my end goal for this game which will be a tough one. So far I am doing well as I have played another 4 months already. Don't want to spoil anything!

Aye, I know the amount of time writing a AAR can absorb. Though it is always appreciated when other readers respond to it, ask questions etc. So you actually feel your are not doing it for nothing, right? :)

September 2 1939 - December 31 1939

September 7 1939

All hell broke loose a 6 days ago with Germany storming into Poland. Hopefully Poland can fend off the Germans that long. France has been rapidly modernizing the army and building new equipment but we just aren’t quick enough. Many divisions are still missing heavy artillery brigades. I ordered a the troops to hold the line at the border while we wait a couple more months to finish the artillery. I hadn’t bothered to make a proper OOB yet either because the army wasn’t done being reorganized. I spent all of the 3rd of September creating a proper command chain. Luckily the Germans didn’t attack until the 5th. They sent a division of infantry right into the Maginot line. Our troops held firm and repelled the attack. We won the first battle against the Germans.

9JIHNQc.png

September 26 1939

Poland fell to the Germans today. There is a sense of panic among the generals. The 2nd Army won’t be ready tell at least November. I am happy to say that the 1st Army is ready to fight and will man the Maginot line. We are just waiting on 3 corps of infantry to receive their artillery. I went to talk to the President a few days ago about hopefully securing some kind of deal with Belgium to help in the war. They have excellent rivers we can use to form a defensive position to hold back the German army tell we can organized. Belgium declined the offer and declaring themselves to be neutral. I fully expect Germany to do what they did in the first Great War. They can push straight through Belgium and then use their fast divisions to speed across the plains in northern France. I have a plan to stop that however.

October 18 1939

Things have gone better than expected. Despite not having any contingency plans for the modern French army, several solid plans have been discussed between the top generals and myself. We have decided on landing troops on the northwest coast of Germany. The 2nd Army will push south through Germany while the 1st Army holds the Maginot line. We need to get our armor on the plains so we can allow our tanks to out maneuver any German troops. The 1st Army consists of 5 corps that all contain 5 divisions of infantry. The 2nd Army contains 5 corps with only 3 of them containing regular infantry. 2 out of the 3 contain 5 infantry divisions while one contains 4. The other 2 corps are armored units. One corps contains 4 armored divisions while the other 3. The infantry divisions are 2 brigades of infantry, one anti-tank gun brigade, and one artillery brigade. The armored units have a brigade of medium tanks, 2 brigades of motorized infantry, and one brigade of tank destroyers. Our air force is tiny. We only have 3 air wings of interceptors and an assortment of tactical bombers. I hope this will be sufficient to beat the Germans.

November 2 1939

Denmark has been annexed by Germany. There is good news though. The 1st Army are a matter of 7 days away from being completely finished. Units are beginning to go through training for Operation Turk, the plan to invade Northern Germany. Hopefully we can expect the invasion to begin in January. The winter conditions won’t be ideal but we cannot afford to sit back. We must take the fight to Germany before they invade Belgium.

November 21 1939

The Netherlands was accepted into the Allies yesterday. Germany immediately sent troops across the border. Right after the announcement Albert and I had a discussion on what to do. Do we continue with Operation Turk and leave the Netherlands to fend for themselves or send the 2nd Army to assist? After much thought we agreed to send help to the Netherlands. We drew up a new plan called Operation Deltoid. The first phase was to get troops to the Netherlands. From there we would hold back the initial German onslaught. After their offensive stalled we would launch our own. The armored divisions would push into Germany and turn south to cut off German supply lines. The infantry would hold until significant progress was made and then push up and form a pocket. Hopefully we can get the troops there in time.

jIFcVB0.png

Early plans of Operation Deltoid.

November 27 1939

We managed to transport a corps and a half of infantry into Belgium already. Immediately I ordered them to rush to good defensive positions to hold back the ever advancing Germans. Just as they arrived to the front they were attacked by the Germans. Tilburg is the first spot of action between France and Germany in the Netherlands.

uqR4DUY.png

The Battle of Tilburg.

December 1 1939

I was woken up to news that the Germans just attacked on another part of the front already a few hours ago. Luckily the armored divisions just made it into the Netherlands. They were ordered to the front line immediately. The ferocity of the German attacks was not expected and the armored divisions should tame the German beast.

6apYph5.png

A view of the front.

December 5 1939

2 Divisions of infantry are holding the northern flank against a motorized German division. They are all that stands in the way of Antwerp. On the other part of the front, Germany continues to smash into our defensive line. We saw the first of the feared German “Panzers” at the battle of Betuwe. Hopefully the anti-tank guns can prove their worth. In the air we are getting crushed. Our planes just flat out suck. I went and met up with the minister of the air force and chewed him out. The performance is unacceptable. How can we fight a war without air cover?! I will talk with Albert in the morning.

6QwC9og.png

Our infantry holding the line.

December 6 1939

I received news this morning that we won the battle of Tilburg late last night. We suffered double the number of casualties than Germany. I fired the general immediately after and assigned someone else. There is a reason I ordered to modernized the French equipment! We need to save lives because France does not have the manpower to fight a war of attrition. I talked to Albert today and he told me that nothing could be done about the air force right now. All of our industry is being used to update the obsolete equipment of the military, producing supplies, or building a handful of destroyers. He did agree that something needed to be done so he would talk with the british about buying some production licenses in the future when some Industry has been cleared up. We must go without for now. I didn’t fully realize just how out of date some of our equipment is. All of France’s industry is running overtime to send modern weapons to our troops.

gJIkgmx.png

We managed to soundly beat the Germans.

December 9 1939

We lost our first battle of the war. German Panzers broke through our lines and secured the Hertogenbosch area. I ordered several divisions to attack the Germans and drive them back. We cannot allow the Germans to hold such a valuable position. They can cut off our divisions in the south. I ordered a few divisions to push on the southern flank in Eindhoven to hopefully try and start some offensive to push the Germans back. Hopefully with some pressure on the Germans they will be reluctant to continue driving forward.

December 10 1939

We lost the battle in that damn Herto whatever area. The Germans are dug in deep. We managed to hold at Tilburg and Betuwe so there is some positives. Both battles the Germans lost more men than we did too so my tactics are proving to work.
I was awoken at 11pm. tonight and alerted about the loss at Eindhoven. Those damn Germans.

rNQwTPE.png

Results across the front.

December 15 1939

The Germans have attacked Breda. We only have to exhausted infantry divisions hold the line there. If they fall the 4 divisions in Tilburg will be surrounded. I just ordered an armored division and infantry division to attack the Panzers. i hope they make it in time to save the infantry.

QH5F9m7.png

We need these infantry to hold at all costs.

December 16 1939

We managed to hold off the Germans at Breda! French armor proved their worth! The French tanks be just fast enough to ambush the Germans. They quickly turned around and are engaging our tanks. The infantry arrived to the battle a few hours later and assisted in the attack. Last I heard things weren’t going well but we saved our flank.

ASzQvL0.png

The troops at Breda pervail!

December 19 1939

More German divisions attacked our lines but this time at Betuwe. Hopefully we can win in that damn Het area first. We need to sure up our lines and dig in. The French troops are starting to get wore down.

December 21 1939

We beat back the recent attack from the Germans. This is excellent news! We can focus our full attention on pushes those pesky Panzers back. Our northern flank is going well. We managed to secure Afsluitdijk and its fort. The Germans immediately attack with 2 of their own infantry divisions but the Netherlands are sending an infantry division to assist us.

CfLzOqr.png

A recent update from the front.

December 27 1939

We managed to take the damned Het area. I ordered the troops to dig in as soon as they secured the area of any stray Germans. The troops got a few days of rest but the Germans attacked today at Betuwe. We are dug in well and I expect to be able to easily hold the line. In the northern flank we lost Afsluitdijk but the Dutch launched a counterattack right away. I ordered French troops to take a day of rest and help the attack on the 28th.

December 31 1939

The German attack stalled in Betuwe and retreated just days after they attacked. I ordered all armor divisions to amass east of Antwerp to get prepared for an offensive into the German heartland. Of course the Germans launched attack right before I went to bed. It was in Tilburg. This is the third or fourth time they have attacked that province...

An update from the north.

's Hertogenbosch is a favourite city of yours isn't it :p
You could just call it Den Bosch, that's basically the unofficial name and a lot easier for non-Dutch to pronounce I guess :)
Looking good, if you can stop the Germans at the rivers in the Netherlands they'll have hard time breaking through.

Things are looking good. How's your production compared to theirs? It seems like it might take awhile for you to modernize your troops which might be a problem. Does the Maginot Line provide your soldiers a defensive bonus?

I didn't think the Germans could win attacking across the river so I only had one division there and sent 2 south to hold at Tilburg where there wasn't a river. Big mistake. My reinforcements were just a little to late. Taking it back was awful!

I have 2 divisions in each province in the Maginot line and like another corps of infantry in reserve in case the Germans attack Belgium. No way the Germans get through the Maginot line. I am currently putting 100 something IC into upgrades, 30 something in supplies, and 10 or so in reinforcements. Any IC that gets freed up from upgrades goes to production to make some hurricanes. I was going to throw in some pictures of just how outdated some of the divisions were but I already used my max for pictures. The armored divisions are very close to being up to date and the infantry is anywhere from WW1 equipment to early WW2. That is part of the reason why I can't generate any kind of offensive. The Germans have almost double my IC I think. I'll have to check.

This sure looks interesting, I wonder how'll this go. Just be cautious with your manpower.

Those are some nasty battles in my home country! Especially the first battle in Tilburg and that last battle in Den Helder will suck up a lot of MP. Hopefully you can maintain this!
