You had no reason to play them right away because the game was released incomplete and the mechanics for these countries did not yet exist. I'm not saying that CK2 was bad on launch because I bought it on release and enjoyed it. But knowing how it is now I know that I shouldn't spend $40 on a PI game at its release when I can wait a few years and get a more complete game on sale. I'm sure they consider the reality of how people buy games today and decided that this approach is the best way to profit from their games, which I can understand. But I don't understand how you can say that their games are complete upon launch when they are designed to be expanded multiple times shortly after release.
if you consider them incomplete at launch don't buy them at launch. easy.

the problem with the "but when its on sale it's super great!" is that you really shouldn't be -encouraging- a userbase of people who only bought into paradox lifestyle when it was on the cheap, instead of fully supporting the devs.

A customer who buys all the DLC in a sale, and gets hooked, will then be set up and ready to buy the latest DLC contest at full price.

you missed my point - sure they got hooked, but it's still better to try and encourage people to see the game at full vaue as worth buying too, and not just wait til its on sale". i've seen many a person on here saying they'll wait til it goes on sale in half a year

The OP should try buying Civ 5 with all the expansions at full price . The changes made with vanilla Civ 5 vs fully expanded Civ5 are basically equal that of the changes made with vanilla ck2 and current ck2, and rarely go on sale. Yet, I've never heard anyone complain that Firaxis is being unfair with the expansion policy. If anything, Ck2/Eu4 have changed even more dramaticly since release then Civ 5 did, and they cost less to fully expand. Thus, I would argue that the current paradox policy is sound and effective.

Sadly my friends who legally own this game, feel kinda angry at paradox that they have to pay $300 to keep up (idgaf tho i enjoy having multiplayer), but yeah it's a real shame if DLC could be alot less intimidating it'd be nice...let's not pretend sprites and music are optional, cause anyone really want to play with arab mongols and ethiopeans?

edit: i meant to inlcude they're simply just pirating all the dlc much to my dismay as now we cna't play together anymore...but still i can understand why cause this shit would be overwhelming if you've not been in from the start (likei have)

You do know most of the older DLCs go on sales at least once a month? I see them on sales often on humble bundle/GMG and others. Even on steam they are often on HEAVY discount. I bought a few of DLCs for a full price just because I was playing the game at the time so I took the dlc then. But when I went into the game for the first time, I bought it all plus DLCs on discount and now I just keep buyng new ones when they come out.

CD projekt RED has , IMO, the best dlc system . Free dlcs + two big expansions that are going to add content similar to a full game. I think that paradox system isn't obsolete, but there are a lot of cosmetic dlcs that could be given free or integrated in a DLC. Because this addons help with the immersion of the game, making me wonder why I need to pay for then separately (the African portraits in CK2 should had been free)

It costs money to make those portraits, so why should they be free ? Included in "mechanic" DLC perhaps, but then those would cost slightly more.

I'm not sure the word "obsolete" is appropriate on a system which gives..

a) MORE people playing the game as times go by, instead of the opposite as is common.
b) MORE people actually buying content compared to our expansions before.

Once the game gets to a certain point, they should probably start releasing "Game of the Year" editions bundled with all the DLC up to a certain date, which is a little less expensive than the game and all those DLC are individually. I think it'd be a decent compromise between their current format and one that is more affordable for people trying to break into the

I love games being expanded... but I find myself knowing they aren't really complete, thus losing the will to play. Happened today with Endless Legend: opened up Steam fully intent on starting a campaign, read that an expansion was due soon and tought "well, no point in playing it now, I'll just do something else". A bit like Waiting for Godot, you know. There are so many games right now, even if you play only some genres, that you really can't commit your time to half-done ones. For this reason I've barred myself from buying early access, and I'm inclined to play Paradox games only once in every two or three major DLCs...

It's nice for something unnecessary like a map expansion, but why do I have to pay for something that should already be in the game? Like CK2's black people.

Because not all of us have a lot of money. If course they're going to wait until it's on sale, who doesn't like spending less on good stuff? To be frank, it's the best damned alternative, hell at least it's better than resorting to piracy.

i do think it would be nice to find a way to reduce the apparent "bloat" on the DLC list cause its easy to see how that can intimidate newer players.
I like the DLC model of medium expansions but i kind of feel as many cosmetic packs as possible should be consolidated with the expansions.

Paradox listens to the community. That is why their games change dramatically after release, it is because they are willing to go as far as it takes to please the people.

Saying that CK2 was/wasn't complete on release is a bit like saying that an 18 year old was/wasn't complete upon leaving Secondary school. It makes basically no sense to think of it in these terms. In the terms of being a good game when it came out, I can't comment. I bought it when a lot of Updates had already come out. I started with SoA and quickly bought old gods, eventually getting all the other expansions and eventually getting the Aesthetic DLCs. At no point did I ever feel the game was incomplete, though I did think that having more DLCs allowed me to play with new content and have new experiences.

I like this system. I like having a game which is good on release and gets better with time.

I agree with this. I like cosmetic packs and I get them when they're ~50% off, but the sheer number looks scary to newcomers.
The problem is that merging them over time will annoy people and might reduce sales in expectation (whereas sales do defer the sales for some, I buy expansions full price).
Starting to incorporate some into the base game might be an idea. I originally bought a "Gold Pack" for CKII that gave me the base game plus a couple of the other things - I can't remember which - in a store, but now Paradox is planning to go online only (did I imagine this?) it makes sense to start doing a bit of the same.

I think the DLC system is good. Paradox's major DLCs are actually important expansions of the base game. With this model, you can skip the cosmetic stuff if you wish so AND get the major update anyway (not to mention a ton of FREE updates).

About the cosmetics, they should've just merged the unit packs with their respective portraits and made them $2 or something cause seeing that amount of DLC on steam is just frightening.
